Also, the 18" M wheels/tires give that extra bit of comfort in the ride while not taking away from the fun of some spirited back road driving.

In the market for a completely impractical car, and drove the C5, 6 and 7 corvettes, boxster S, M4, 911 and probably others. If you really want a sports car, an actual sports car, to drive every day and make you feel like you are in control and feel the thunder, the C6 corvette is the best choice and the 996 and 997 Porsche are great too. Just depends what kind of experience you're looking for. Corvettes are easy to maintain, easy to sell, and there's plenty of parts to spice things up. And the acceleration and handling are brutal but you must respect the power or it will take you for a ride.
I, also, do not understand the flummox that so many folks have with the BMW/Toyota collaboration. As far as I'm concerned, it's a win-win for both companies. I love this Z4 and am equally impressed with the Supra.

Hi Alex I’m so torn on the new supra one part of me is glad that it’s back the other part of me is sad that it’s platform sharing because what made the supra so special to me was you had an every day car company that made every day driving appliances design this really cool 90s sports car and at the time I remember everybody telling me who wants $48,000 Toyota? I got to drive one of these and really, really love it, but it's hard to justify spending so much money for a car like this when you could almost get two Miatas for the same price.
You say the Supra couldn’t exist without the Z4 but that’s not true. While Toyota may have opted to partner with BMW for various reasons they certainly have the resources, being a much larger company than BMW, to produce their own Supra in house just as Honda did with the new NSX which will sell in far fewer numbers than the new Supra. So I think you’re dead wrong. You said you don’t understand why Toyota fans are upset, but the essence of the old Supra, and even a Japanese sports car in general, have been lost with this merger. And, perhaps most legitimate of all, the new Supra is going to have BMW reliability and that’s a huge blow. And Toyota dealers are going to struggle with all the warranty work the new Supras will undoubtedly need. They might as well be from another planet with an entirely different approach to many things especially BMWs famously over complicated and unreliable electronics. And while resale of high-end Japanese cars tends to remain quite strong for a long time, resale of BMWs drops dramatically when they’re out of warranty because the modern ones are so expensive to keep on the road. So all those upset have some very valid concerns contributing to much lower Supra sales than what they could have been.
The mk4 had low sales and it was made by Toyota. They don't have a single car nor chassis that can support a i6 nor do they have the factories to make/build them either plus they can barely see any car they have currently thats over 70k because they are either heavy or overpriced and if Toyota built the supra themselves I'll guarantee that it wouldn't be anywhere near on how the mk5 is today since they can barely make a rwd chassis without it weighting well near 4k nor does it's community actually try to push any of their current platforms to actually see if they'd have a good reason/chance to make it themselves especially when they don't have a big aftermarket that's into their current line up of cars(other than the 86) like BMW does.
Carboy good points but I come back to the NSX and other low volume cars coming out of Japan and Korea that are partly justified by improving brand credibility even if they’re not profitable. As I said in my reply I’m sure Toyota had their reasons but they ARE capable of still making 2 door sports cars. The joint effort with Subaru and the 86 makes more sense even if it’s not a Mk 3 MR2. At least they’re two Japanese companies with similar followings. Toyota does have RWD platforms, and AFAIK you’re correct about none being able to accommodate an inline 6. But I think many would rather have a V6 real Toyota vs something that’s 95% a re-badged BMW. They could base it on a Lexus platform. And it wouldn’t throw errors on the dash on a regular basis, the infotainment system would actually work right, and it would spend much less time at the dealer than a rebadged BMW.
A little sports car only comes with an automatic? What's the point? test drove that very model.. It was very fast, and you can program the engine management for lots of muffler burble... the whole thing felt unearned. And it's more expensive than a Z51 C8 2020 Corvette! Around $66,000.

In other words, it was truly a joint platform develop effort with Toyota tuning of BMW parts and components. Can you find out if this is true?

I've driven Z cars daily for the last 20 years, starting with Z3, then graduating to Z3M, Z4 3.0, and Z4M. After waiting 14 years for a new Z4M, I bought jaguar F-Type. When it's cars like this it's no guarantee that any of them are escaping mark up price or 20-40k over sticker for any first year model car is never going to be cheap even for the supras. I can remember the days when the type r came out and people were pissed with the ridiculous prices dealers were throwing them up for. It's no different for this thing anyway. As soon as a year go by the 2021 models will already be out and the current mk5s might be in the 30k range by then.
The people that complain about the BMW/Toyota partnership are total idiots who know absolutely nothing about cars. I’m sick of hearing these fanboy tuners who drive cars with “soupcan” mufflers that sound like complete garbage. I like this car, so I’m getting it. Just wish it had manual, but you can’t have everything.
So the Supra will have the BMW reliability?
accord03 of course! Maintenance schedule is a check in every 500 miles
No and yes. There are a few differences in parts wise with the mk5s B58 vs Z4s B58. Plus the B58s already to be way more reliable than the N54/55 and even the S55 and is being compared to the M50(one of the strongest and most reliable BMW i6s ever made)but it was mainly made to not have any relation to the problems the N series suffered from.
People can’t help but Cry, and complain. When I was told why the marriage of Toyota and BMW I understood and figured we are lucky because the day is coming that Roadsters will be only a RICH PERSONS thing as there is such a tiny market and don’t make financial sense. Grab your MX-5 Miatas now while you can!
Magna builds the supra and the z4. Just sayin.
Awesome
24:50 If you do need Supraservice
Without BMW, Toyota sports car fans would have squadouche
Without Toyota, BMW sports cars fans would have squadouche
BMW build the M2 Comp with nothing from Toyota. Your statement is very uneducated
You ignored the new Corvette, same money.
Crayfish Moonshine yeah, but this car can go around corners and isn’t made out of plastic. It also doesn’t have a wall between the driver and the passenger, which is kind of the point of a sports car. If you don’t have a pretty woman in the passenger seat you’re doing it wrong
10k more in the states but everywhere else the C8 jumps up to 20k or more because if the engine displacement taxes.
It would be the BMW Z4
Corvettes are selling just fine. Maybe the z4 should die so a new idea can be tried.
Is this a Kia stinger hahah
718 boxster for me, dunno why the hardtops were in the comparison segment, the supra should be a GTA and march larger and comfortable. the z4 lacks preciseness besides the headlights being on top of each other. the audi TT RS convertibale would be nice but sincei its the TT why buy that over a civic type r? c43 is not a convertible and i would go with bmw over that. the artist fromably known as the clk is stil in need of an update.
bird718 c43 can be a convertible. TT RS over a civic because more power, the turbo 5 cylinder obviously sounds better and more luxurious (Audi and Honda).
Great tech and all but it’s utterly uninspiring and weird looking.
Another 1
It’s pronounced Zed4 not Zee4. Unbelievable !!!
depends on where you live.
Your BMW/Toyota story is utterly stupid and wrong. BM and Toyota partnered up to develop and test a sports car platform together and both cars are built by Steyr in Austria. Man.
Alex, your videos are very informative and you are very knowledgable, no doubt. But listening to you is like drinking water out of the fire hydrant. Why not filter the amount of info given, slow down in delivery and cut the over all video length to 15-20 minutes? Just sayin'.
I don't speak for all Toyota/ Supra fans. But I personally would rather we didn't have either of them.. A badge engineered FLAGSHIP car?? Absolutely disgraceful. Toyota should be ashamed.... And we don't need the hairdresser's BMW either. let it go.
i'd rather own a hardtop than a convertible.
Javierm0n0 Supra is for you then.
BMW 428 xi is what you want. I have a 2014 - great fun
BIG.MONEY.WASTER, Scotty is always right lol
The BMW gauges are atrocious. Deal-breaker.
What did Toyota do to the styling of the Supra? I think Toyota should just get out of the coupe business, they're all ugly going back to the 1980s.
I've driven Z cars daily for the last 20 years, starting with Z3, then graduating to Z3M, Z4 3.0, and Z4M.
After waiting 14 years for a new Z4M, I bought jaguar F-Type. This new Z4 is a hideous beast. The Boxster proportions totally betray the identity of the Z. The interior angles look like the designer had vertigo.
The wheels all look like Wal-Mart aftermarket, and the non-functional exterior scoops reek of a broke high school boy trying to look cool.
Just terrible.
