You know how I know he's a master costumer? He works that whole pastel sketch and doesn't get even the tiniest smudge on his white shirtcuffs. 🙏 RESPECT
There are many ppl going online for school &/or work that have work nowadays. It's quite peculiar! 1 of my pals has to go online for school. However, I learn some of the things she does as I'm also fascinated by the arts & film category!!!!! I do so for the sake of learning while she intends to graduate 1 day. :)
Love William Ivey Long! My 17 year old designed her schools musical, Cinderella this spring and the highlight was when she was nominated by her teacher to attend a gala in his honor. She also got to attend a tour of an exhibit of his work that he led. He was so kind to her and her assistant designer and talked with them about designing Cinderella for Broadway. It is a wonderful thing to see those who are at the top of their field taking time to share their love of the craft!
He seems like a nice man, and the costumes are terrific. Follies is such a great show; it so deserves the really character and period aware costumes,, and.. oh.. those ghost showgirls!
I miss the fitting room so much. One of the most special moments in the theatre is seeing yourself in your characters clothing for the first time. It’s puts you in their world. I come back to this video every time ❤️
When I was a kid everyone told me I have no fashion sense until I made a Cinderella inspired dress at 12 years old. This dress got reserved grand champion at districts and 8th place at state.
I'm going to the Shakespeare Competition with my school this year, and I'm doing costuming. I'm terrified, but this video helped me figure out what all I should work on as far as my skills go. Thank you guys!
I can't believe how much work goes into preparing the costume for the next day. It surprised me how closely the designer worked with the actor to ensure the costume was right for them. - Paige
The story you guys had about your inspiration was amazing I loved how you guys and gals enjoyed what you did so much, and how you became other peoples inspiration just by doing something you enjoyed so much.
This was well done and informative, particularly about W.I.L.'s process...but it does rather make it look like he sews the costumes himself. (What the heck was he doing repairing beads on an old "Girls in Pearls" chorus girl costume from THE PRODUCERS movie??) Still, it's a lovely overview of how different costume designers find inspiration, translate research, and work with actors.
Hi I am a Costume Design student and I was wondering if anyone knew about portfolio for film costume design assistant job. 1. What size should the portfolio be? 2. How many pages? 3. Horizontal or vertical? 4. In what order should you organize your work? 5. Leather? or zipped up portfolio? What kind? Thank you! I appreciate anyone that can help me out.
Jessica Ohare that’s the same thing I’m trying to figure out. But I don’t think a portfolio has a certain size as long as you give examples of what you created in the past. Let me know if you figured something out
Have you seen any these yet? The Stage Manager (Career Guides) - th-cam.com/video/NsUCoK3hBs4/w-d-xo.html, Stage Manager (In the Wings) - th-cam.com/video/IxaXb_16cSY/w-d-xo.html, or Unions and Guilds - th-cam.com/video/XB7nCtvZWRA/w-d-xo.html
i mean I am glad that there even is something here about costume design but unfortunately it is only about the designers not the actual costume department and team behind a production. The whole point of communication, interaction und compromising is missing. It is kinda a dreamy Illusion that is portrayed here.
Wow, one can tell this is nine years old when they say men only wear pants or trousers. Now, men are wearing skirts….it is very interesting to see the evolution of men’s options.
it's amazing how one show can change your life and it takes a lot of commitment to pull through this fashion designing world. but it's pretty sad that there is a small range of kinds of clothing for guys tho :(
Isn't it amazing but also shocking how long it can take t figure out ur true dreams? Took my friends so long also! I'm still uncertain tho currently!!!!!!!
I want to know why this whole minidocu was presented as if costume designing was a blue collar job, something bland and grey, costume designing is so exciting yet it was shown as if its one of the most liveless jobs on earth
we had to do a summary/essay on this video for my dumb theatre tech class. I click the link and see the video is 33 minutes long and im like hell no. Thought this shid would be a couple of minutes. I aint gonna watch this.
@@danceteacherrlbmust one agree with everything the titans say? I mean this man is dressed and groomed impeccably to look the part of the gentleman and has the nerve to tell others they shouldn’t focus on how they look as designers. I mean give me a break. He’s a genius and has all kinds of great things to say, but that wasn’t really one of them.

yea my theatre teacher gave this to us

Had him as teacher many years ago in stage design. Such great memories...... still something I think about today. William is a great story teller
where did he teach?

As someone who really wants to go into costumes and fashion this gives me so much encouragement
May the motivation & inspiration manifest to success!!!!
I would love to see a video on costume preservation.
So much respect and admiration for Willian Ivey Long!
+Vanessa Koh He's my grandfather, my dad's dad
This makes me want to cry. This is all I've ever wanted to do.
Then do, babe
I hope u get to or have by now. Have u at least started in it yet? Best of luck!!!
I appreciate that it shows many different designers with different backgrounds, methods, and experiences.
Something I appreciate about this video is their background stories and how their work shows their life
He seems like a nice man, and the costumes are terrific. Follies is such a great show; it so deserves
the really character and period aware costumes,, and.. oh.. those ghost showgirls!
I really enjoyed them talking...jus about their old days and making us relate to all that.. So beautifully telling those stories
I've just been watching Project Runway season 7, and recognised Emilio Sosa on the show because of this video!
Me too! I was so happy to see that he's working on broadway

didn't think i'd ever see william ivey long on stilts but here we are, such a legend
This behind the scenes series is everything
What a wonderful and inspirational video... thank you Mr. Long for "showing us around!" Love this video and looking forward to more!
It's so inspiring! Can't form my feeling right now in writing but thank you for this video. RIP, Willa.
I loved all the guests in this video, but if William Ivey long ever wants to have his own tv show I would definitely watch it
The story you guys had about your inspiration was amazing I loved how you guys and gals enjoyed what you did so much, and how you became other peoples inspiration just by doing something you enjoyed so much.

LOVE this series.
+Mo Poppins Thank you so much!
Titans if the industry, all three of them.
Thank you for posting! Magic!
At 16:27 does anyone know where to buy those smaller mannequin dress forms? Or how to make one
Sophiegal7 I believe that is a half scale mannequin. And you can buy them at lots of different places. I hope this helped!
This is such a lovely, personal peak into the unseen worlds of theatre 😊
This is pretty good! Helped me with my crew research paper for costume design
I love the passion for fashion!!!
This is a wonderful article.... wondering if I can get into costume design at 40 and in NZ.....

Costumes designers seen as a waste of time. Pleating sounds and looks unique. Waist is probably the hardest when designing costumes.

A costume or wardrobe person should not have clothes that stand out. That means you’re focused on yourself and not the work.” ...ok, boomer.
