As a current rookie prop master struggling through a high school production of Le Mis, this is the most inspirational video I have seen in a long time. This brought a smile to my face, it is an incredibly stressful job and these seem like just the best kind of people
As a high schooler, I didn’t know that prop masters make a mock prop, so they can evaluate on what they need to fix, add, or lose on the final prop. I always thought 💭 they go straight to creating the final product. Now that I know, I appreciate the tech a lot more!
I love the Prop Star woman. I am in the same mind. I was a bit stunned by this video that things aren't used and repurposed but bought new. For that matter built! By an antique chair that could be built and painted by a good prop house for a fraction of the cost?? Anyone one ever heard of the art of illusion?
Here in the philippines, no name or title that can describe your position at Art Department but it can be called "One man team" at TV Prod. But its nice because you can do whatever or wherever you assigned. 😊
At 10:22 I appreciate how an unwritten requirement for being a props master is being extremely flexible and always be prepared for something different. Being flexible can make the process of the show go really smooth.
something that stuck with me was that being the perfect prop master depends on your personality. also, the hard work the put into the props was phenomenal
i love how they try their best to make it look so accurate , i also live how they make so strong because we as theatre kids do tend to break props easily!
Very Informative at the same time they inspired me a lot ... I'm 17 years old but I really love Art especially creating props for a Role Play presentations in our school WE *ALWAYS* WIN for example : We won 1st on a Room Decoration contest for Presenting our room inspired by a theme of a country INDIA . ( United Nation month ) We WON 1st of making something from a movie ... We made a Game of thrones Throne ( English Month ) Made a stage play called " If I were a Hero " and We've got 1st and won best production set and MANY MORE ! It keeps me and us ( my classmates ) to strive more and *learn* *more* .... This video motivates me to get a course of Arts and Design in College ( I'm studying at Senior Highschool ).... I want to be a Prop Master too 😍💙 thank you for Inspiring me . PS: I'm not really good in English sorry for my grammar 😅😄 EDIT!! Year 2021 Update: I'm shook that I commented somthing like this haha. I'm currently 21 Years Old now, studying Bachelor of Performing Arts major in Theatre (and a Scholar too!!) I still love crafting and stage designing!! I hope someday I'll be working with people who's also passionate about these stuffs :)
@@mathewkanichay8349 Yo! I'd probably use a Carbon Fiber as my skeleton then a lot of wood and cardstock (for detailing) then metallic paint for giving the illusion for metal bars of the bus station.

Rhian Leake I am no more experienced about that than you are, but I think it’s like a lot of other jobs. You need connections. Perhaps volunteer for a few plays nearby and try to get some experience and then just climb up the ladder, trying to become known. At least, that’s what I would do

I feel like there should be a person whose job is to sell things at the end of a production and make some money back. And I know there are prop houses, but maybe there should be huge warehouses where things are stored in sections by period or something. It seems like a lot of prop people are having to reinvent the wheel unnecessarily. Also, this guy should try to talk to some former prop masters & find out how they did this job before the internet! I'm sure many are still living; pre-internet wasn't THAT long ago... Mabye he could learn something. I'm interested to know about this myself!
I agree 100%. Donate, donate, donate! Small theater companies, high schools, middle schools, Goodwill, Habitat for Humanity, the list goes on! And selling back for some money is also a great idea. I've done that on occasion.
If it helps, I’m currently at University in Britain learning design for performance, Theatre, Film and Live Events with Birmingham City University where they go over model boxes and designing for the theatre. We do some prop making and have excellent facilities to use too. You could even lean through an apprenticeship or purely through experience.

@@WandaWitch2800 from what I've learned an apprenticeship is as just as good or in some cases better. I can only really comment on what university is like. An apprenticeship will give you a paid place and experience in the working world, but I believe it's quite competitive. University is great for learning not just your chosen field but other fields too. You can also meet some great people and work on some fantastic projects of your choosing. While I've only just graduated I'm still searching for a career. An apprenticeship will give you quick access to some excellent networks but so will university. If it helps, I didn't have to do exams, a lot of the work I did was practical (unfortunately you still have to dissertations which even the tutors don't completely agree with as it's a creative course) but it's great to be able to have access to all the facilities and to make your own projects.
This requires a lot of hard work and long hour days. Just because it’s not as important as saving lives, you don’t have to moan at their job. Every job has a purpose

If it helps, I’m currently at University in Britain learning design for performance, Theatre, Film and Live Events with Birmingham City University where they go over model boxes and designing for the theatre. We do some prop making and have excellent facilities to use too. You could even lean through an apprenticeship or purely through experience.
