Although basic the Coolmoon Fan / RGB Controllers really do offer a lot for the price but it is a shame they are restricted to Coolmoon fans due to the connections. Hopefully this guide will help others with that. If this video helped you then make sure you come and join our Discord Community and show us what you did here: discord.com/invite/Dx7xZt5MHF

Hey bro, sorry i want to ask, did you know what the different of 6 pin fan like in this video and 6 pin with lock like armaggeddon fan or aerocool fan? Because i've tried the fans with 6 pin like in this video to my controller fan (infinity case built in) it doesnt work, and fans in my infinity case have 6 pin with lock like aerocool or armaggeddon fan. Thank you

Hey, I'm not sure without taking one apart but I suspect they work using the same principal but other brands may swap the wires around to make it so you have to buy their fans and controllers. With the Coolmoon fan speed on these 6Pins are simply two wires. The other four are for the ARGB which is effectively just a standard. Others may have PWM power for the fans meaning three wires for fan power (PWM Wire to change speeds) and three wires for the ARGB +5, GND, In (Missing the Out as even these Coolmoon fans don't use the out, the wire is just there).

Tried to plug in an Aerocool Mirage 12 fan but it didn't work, figured out the pinouts are different just like this: N-G-D-5v-G-12v (N is the data out pin which is unusable by the fan).
So what i did was to flip the connector and switch the 5v and 2nd G pins so it matched the ones in the controller. The Fan did spin and I managed to controll the speed but the lights didn't turned on at all. Do you think I messed the RGB the first time I plugged them incorrectly ? or is just a compatibility issue ?

@@Lancer265 Yes that's right. I already have two of the Duo 14s, and I'm getting three Duo 12s to go with them. I am very fond of the fact that they have dual lighting patterns on each fan (blade and drum) and that the Aerocool controller plays to this advantage. Plus, they also serve two ARGB extensions, as well as six fans in total, with a remote control that also does fan speed. So, for £20, how could I refuse. They are bright and quite lovely, and I can always swap to the Aerocool Mirage model if I want a snappy look.

Thanks for this video dude! My case came with it's own rgb hub and led strip, but I had a separate for my fans that's exactly like coolmoon. My case led strip is only 3 pins, and I've tried plugging it to my fan hub, which accepts 4 pin for the led strip. Now it's broken. I bought another led strip but it's 3 pin again. Thankfully the strip is labelled now, so I was able to make it work even with the different connectors thanks to your explanation on the pins.

  • @DrRoos

Your video is an excellent explanation if RGB wiring. Just bought a computer from ibuypower. The MB does not support RGB. I have a board (similar to the Coolmoon) connected to the fan power board feeding 4 fans. The 3 pin board is not connected to anything else and has several 3 pin (forth one in middle missing) connections at 5V. I figure a can connect RGB to these 3 pin connectors with right adapter. Not sure if the Coolmoon (or another) controller is necessary. It would be nice to have a remote controller to change lighting. I bought the new Phanteks NEON Digital-RGB LED Strip and not sure what its connection looks like but heard they keep it from being compatible from others. Is there a way (like ohms) to identify each wire on the LED strip +, -, 5V? When I get it I will connect it and see how it looks. I plan to add RGB lights to the fans. Coolmoon seems as good as more expensive controllers. The software for them seems new and problematic. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

The 3Pin 5v systems are ARGB so are incompatible with the 4Pin RGB systems. it sounds as though you already have a controller built in and if it's using the 3Pin standard other items should just plug straight into it. It's hard to tell without seeing, if you have access to discord we can chat more about it (See TH-cam Header for our server link).

You can convert any of the Coolmoon 6Pin or 4Pin connections to a 3Pin ARGB standard connection. ARGB is a standard in terms of wiring so yes, this will work and I have done it like this a few times (In fact on Ebay you can buy adaptors for this exact thing). You can't convert ARGB to RGB though as they are different standards. Hope this helps.

Actually I just thought. if your motherboard doesn't have ARGB but your components do then you can simply buy a 3Pin Coolermoon controller. their newer versions come with the standard connections so no work involved. Only need to convert yourself if you already have coolmoon fans in this version of the controller and want to add a 3Pin standard device to it.

Unfortunately a lot of the Coolmoon controllers with these types of connections have no way of being sycronised. Although, knowing the pinout of the fans i would replace the argb connections on the fans with standard 3Pin and run the lights from the Motherboard through a splitter or hub so the lights can be synced and run the fans from the original Coolmoon hub. A lot of work though.

I'm sorry if you have answered this before, but I can't find it anywhere. My pc came with a similar controller, but I can't control it through the motherboard. It is connected with a 3 pin connector and the aura sync software recognises it as a Adressable LED strip, but it doesnt change the color. I'm not sure what controller you have as most are different. If it came with the ability to plug into the motherboard it must have Sync. In my experience there has to be away of switching it from the controller it's self to the motherboard. Sometimes they do this through a connection to the reset switch on the case (They reuse the switch to switch the source of the RGB). Take a look at the wiring on the controller and see if this is done.

I wonder if you could control the ARGB that way by through software by hooking it up with a USB type A into motherboards that don't have an ARGB header.

I fixed it. You need: A measuring device like a Multimeter to check for bad capicitators(measuring from ground) and need to check the resistance values of resistors first. If they are okay you need to check the chips according to the code written on it.(search the sheets for them online) Atfer everything seemed fine according to this. I decided to reflow the board with a Heatblower. The soldering is atrocious and thats the weak point of the device. You need to reflow the chip on the other side of the antenna. Also you need capton tape to protect the plastic or other deflecting foil. Then it willmake proper contact and work again.

Hi, Unfortunately these versions of the Coolmoon controllers don't allow connections to motherboards. They are stand alone. There are more expensive versions out there that allow this and Coolmoon have recently released one that does (I have just got one in now) but they often use an existing RGB/ARGB header from your motherboard which wouldn't help you.
