This was my first Star Trek episode ever, having been told about the show by classmates in November of 1966. When I first saw Balok, I was disappointed with the special effects. Upon learning it was not supposed to look "real", I grew relieved.

It's kinda the appeal though, right? Although I am starting to feel silly for being scared as a kid!

I was wondering now if Bailey was just using bravado to hide his insecurities. Then when he got his epiphany became the officer he needed to be. In a way we saw him mature on screen. My present speculation of course.
I’ve been seeing on You Tube scenes from the original series but with corrections for more realism. For me it’s like watching “The Maltese Falcon” colorized. It doesn’t have the same impact as the original.
I’ve wondered if your opinion resembles mine on this.

On Bailey I think you're right, and I think that was the intention. It works, but how successfully depends on how irritating you find the character.
Interested in finding out more about this realism correction. I don't mind stuff like this, but I do like watching the episodes in their original format. Sometimes when I'm feeling particularly retro I'll watch the non-remastered stuff in black and white to try and approximate what most viewers saw back on first airing. It's fun.

It is a pretty good episode, but it really makes me wonder about the "First Federation"? Who are they? What do they want? Are they all toddlers?
I mean, later Trek gives us 3 big empires (well, a Representative Democracy and two empires) and no mention of any other group out there, at least until post TNG.

I'd like to see SNW do something with them. Maybe go down the "Regeneration" route to preserve canon. I'd love to see a modern interpretation on the Balok puppet.

@@treklad , maybe just like a name drop in an episode; like Enterprise runs into an alien who's ship is flying the flag of the First Federation. And borrow a page from LD and have a real life whatever species Balok's puppet was!

      I love that idea!

@@treklad Thanks; another idea I had was a concept I had for Starfleet Intelligence/Section 31: they completely fake a species to cover their activities. Like all the info of this species is fake, and SI/31 have fake ships from this species, "colony outposts" and maybe even holographic aliens and disguises, all to better infiltrate other species better.
Maybe the First Federation uses Balok's the same way, or at least the Toddlerians do?

Enjoyed your review. Doesn't Kirk say that Bailey will return to Starfleet as a more experienced officer? Kirk (from my memory) says "....and I'll be getting a more experienced officer".

You're absolutely right. To me it came across as a little too open ended. We've never seen the First Federation since so I've always taken it that Bailey's placement was an extended one. In any case I still find it strange that Bailey is so open to the idea after everything we'd seen before.

Weak ending? No, that's called surprise ending with moral satisfaction.

At least by showing people spending so much time staring at screens (like you and I are doing now) made the show ahead of its time.

That's actually a really good point.

I like this episode. No, Balock's face did not give me nightmares and as far as the ending, Bailey could have been a hermit or even a misanthrope at heart in which case he wouldn't have minded being away from other humans.

Been a while since you’ve put your face in a video. Were you waiting until the hair had fully grown out? 🙂
Makes it so much easier for editing though doesn’t it. Less footage to find.
