For anyone that flies regularly in Wasteland or DayZ this is extremely helpful. Most of the time you'll be going up against only one enemy and this can save yourself so many times!
Fantastic tip about how strafing angles can be used to your advantage for beginner pilots Dslyecxi! I would personally love it to see just how you put these videos together, with all the camera scripts and the like, I'm trying to mastery cinemagraphy in ArmA games.
Though the controls and movement obviously aren't the same, these videos always help as general knowledge when I pilot in other games such as betafield. Thanks Dslyecxi.
It's worth noting that the Mujahadeen used a similarly inspired tactic on foot while fighting the Russians in the Soviet/Afghan conflict; by using the terrain to stay above the elevation limit of Russian armor in engagements.
Bahahahha that opening sequence near the church was amazing, in an epoch mod we have a base there and are the most hated on the server due to having 2 amazing pilots and 2 good pilots (me being one of them :D), so that exact scenario happens to us all the time.
I've done this before and works great, just keep in mind if there are more AA's in different locations dont, learnt that the hard way also haha. I love those camera angles, so amazig! Great tip!
Basically it requires lots of scripting knowledge. To start you off if you're interested, I'd recommend trying GCAM for ArmA 3 from armaholic, and also, search on TH-cam 'ArmA how to use unitPlay unitcapture' and a nice little step by step guide will show you how to set up scenes in the editor that can be replayed and recorded with GCAM.
Just takes loads of practice and experience. I'm sure he would say the same. When you've spent hundreds of hours flying the same digital chopper you learn how it handles very well. I can relate
So just a quick question i enjoy arma but im used to using my keyboard for throttle and witht the new throttle mechanics in the new flight model im having a hard tim i do have a joystic analog throttle but im still not sure where my throttle shoulde be when im tryimg to hover, land, takeoff, and preform variour other mranuers how can i improve my control and how should i be using the new analog type throttle system
I was thinking about it from the ground crew's perspective, and if there's a ditch or steep hill nearby couldn't the crew use the terrain to shift their blindspot as defense against the pedestal?
Dyslecxi, ive watched and enjoyed most of your tutorials as well as some of your shack tac operational vids. Is playing in 1st person perspective an immersion choice for you or is it standard procedure in shack tac...somehow required somehow by a mod maybe?
Helicopters can't handle so much G forces like that. In real life, a sudden upwards pull at around 280 Km/ph like he did, would result in around 6 to 7 Gs or even more, that would damage the blades too and would force the frame too much.
***** Yeah then go ahead and do it and see if you are gonna be alive after that. I've been flying for 8 years and I can tell you that it's just too much pressure for a Helicopter.
felipegames12 The logic you're using here is really prone to slippery-slope, so perhaps using that will help illustrate my point. If you follow that all the way back, you end up at a point where even pitching up into any kind of a climb is impossible. So, between that extreme and the other extreme where things will break, there has to be a point at which you can safely do a climb. Thus, in the AFM, you simply find that point and work with it. It looks different because it's a more shallow maneuver. If it wasn't possible to do such a thing, ag turns in reality wouldn't be possible, either. I appreciate your experience but I think you're missing my point here.
***** Yes you can do a steep climb while going fast, but not like in the video. The guy I first answered asked if that (what you did in the video) would work in real life, and no it wouldn't, but a more gentle climb would.
Been doing this for as long as i can remember flying any kind of chopper in a game XD sadly it's quite difficult to communicate to your pub gunners to take shots at the target below you in games like Bf3/4 >.> so i tend to end up being the star in a christmas tree with AA gunning for me Q.Q;;
How often do you actually come across a single enemy vehicle? Because you might stay out of sight of that one, but what if his buddies show up? I mean, you are still quite high above him, but doesn't that make you a target for anything else if you have to stay within that 'cone' above your target? How useful do you actually rate this maneuvre?
iridian You can see me use this from time to time in any videos where I'm acting as CAS. Given the context of it being a surprise encounter with an enemy vehicle, it's very useful - the alternative is usually to just hope that you don't get shot down trying to extend. If there are other vehicles in the area, of course you have to weigh the pros and cons, but it's not uncommon to have vehicles operating closely enough together that getting into the dead zone of one puts you in the dead zone of others. It's also generally better to be taking long-range shots from a second vehicle than it is to be taking close-range shots from the original one - better chance of missing/evading.
I thought I was the only one who did this. But sometimes with a very large helicopter its kind of hard to try to stop in that "dead zone" cause while you're bleeding off speed buy pulling your nose up sometimes it won't be enough and you'll miss it.
Killjoy There is no vehicle in Arma that, in this situation, can move fast enough to avoid having the helo stay in its dead zone. It doesn't matter if it's moving or not, the same principles apply.
when it starts moving use the chance to egress in the opposite direction. It's pretty hard to hit a diving helicopter even from a non moving vehicle. Add in uneven terrain and your vehicles movement and the gunner is going to have some serious problems putting precise fire your way. The biggest problem with this maneuver in my experiences with it is actually that some larger helicopters simply turn and climb like trying to fly a blue whale. Sudden changes in direction and gaining altitude quick are pretty hard to do with those. Of course those helicopters also tend to have pretty decent armor, giving you far better chances of surviving if you take fire from a single vehicle :)
Cool idea but i feel its posibually slightly flawed, most vehicles will have a driver as well and considering how the travel time of the heli is greatly reduced so it fits in the deadzone, against a good team in a vehicle they will simply move quickly. That technical is pretty quick and could pull it self out of teh dead zone sharpish to get the angle on the dangle. No offence intended as i rate your vids and thoughts highly Dsyecxi and would to know your view.
ClawsTM I could sit above a player-controlled vehicle like this all day long without an issue - helos are far faster and far more maneuverable than any ground unit will ever be.
***** Ah perhaps showing my lack of heli knowledge, or come accross bad pilots. I know the +'s for speed and maneuverability in comparison, but wondered how easy it was to stay in the deadzone of a mounted gun for a any considerable amount of time with it on the move to get a shot. Thanks for the reply, you run a popular channel and cant be easy keeping tabs.

Love this defense / attack technique in Arma. We've used it a number of times in our clan to good effect. Thanks Dslyexci!
best done tutorials I've seen in awhile
Though the controls and movement obviously aren't the same, these videos always help as general knowledge when I pilot in other games such as betafield. Thanks Dslyecxi.
Thank for the tip! I knew there was a dead zone but had never considered it as something to exploit while piloting.
Great video as usual. Thank you for what you do Dsclyecxi.

Very handy. It's hard not to panic in these moments.
That's some incredible camera work.

Anti airs = nap of the earth ;-)
The camera work in this video is top notch, is is relatively easy to create these sorts of shots in arma or is it quite difficult?

Great guide as always, it's very nice to see next episodes of AoF :D
You want some sirens for your Stuka-copter?
That's a really cool trick actually
I'm digging the new video UI too.
this is some clutch shit right here, straight out of a hollywood action flick, I love it
It's crazy seeing how well you can fly a little bird!
Just takes loads of practice and experience. I'm sure he would say the same. When you've spent hundreds of hours flying the same digital chopper you learn how it handles very well. I can relate
Thank you. Never would have thought of that.
Not common, but very useful when needed. Thanks
AMV with it's fantastic 40mm cannon and low ammo count

BFGfreak They could, but the helo could also see this and adjust accordingly.
Is it possible with AFM?
Or only in basic control.
good stuff man.

Joe Kendall We force first-person. Take a look at this video for more: th-cam.com/video/v7zoVIsIT2A/w-d-xo.html
Hell yes , thank you ,
That's a pretty cool technique, I wonder if such a thing is used irl... As in trained

felipegames12 You can do the same thing in the AFM, it just requires slightly shallower maneuvers. It's by no means impossible.

I know the feels bro
Brilliant
I'll use this when the situation arises
is this kind of maneuver even possible in a real helicopter? also are you using the advanced flight model in this video?
I keep twinkies in my tactical tool box, next to the bacon.
This is my go to method in battlefield bad company 2 vietnam expansion

Alright, thanks for replying!
Keep up the good work :)
And best against single targets,
if he has some friends near by that safe zone could get really small in a very little amount of time.

Is that... J.S. Bach with Arnold Schwarzenegger's face?
Headrock yeah haha
Headrock Thedoubt I am Bach.
Klobbson
LOL yeah that's the first thing I thought about when I realized what his avatar was.
Will you be one doing more real flight day?
Sometime this month he is aiming for he said.
Thank you! Did not know....
Cepllo Gonzalez No problem!
Mind you - only works if playing against someone who doesn't know how to move.

mmmmm 4k
Sooo sexy! Wish there was a 4k 60 FPS option too XD
+Tibialstone7 lol 2 year render time.
