This happened to me in real life once, although I wasn't attacking a target from a helicopter, I was trying to recover a dropped potato chip from the kitchen floor and hit my head on the countertop going down.
Well, i have this tactic; it's very good in urban areas espcially in arma. here are few rules you need to know: 1.Know the city design; you can do that by flying a bit far from the target area and take notes in your head about the city large buildings and major streets and street allignment. 2.Know where the enemy would go (Speculate) when you see a convoy that is just getting out of base, let the move until the are in a large street, and then got line up on them and Burn them into crisp!. 3.Know what's the enemy's strongest vehicles so you know that you know what to attack first, a Zu-23-2 Truck or a T-72,55,62 etc. 4.know what are your weakness and strength points, so for examble: a Mi-8MTV2 helo, it's fast, powerful, can go into really high alt. but the the right hand it's BIG like, REALLY Big, you cant go really close to the enemies you have to stay into hover-like situation and pick them with your 80 S-8 Rockets and your gun pods. and it's HEAVY so you cant got into a dive all the time like an Ah-6, and you cant pull really hard, you might break the tail or go into a retreating Blade Stall. That's all what i have. Sorry for my bad english :)
There are very, very few times where the need to destroy a target is greater than the need to keep a helo and its pilot alive and in the air. Taking the time and care to get it right is usually worthwhile!
I know i have said it before but your command of the English language and how that mastery makes for a much more in-depth and powerful involvement in your story telling.. I love you vid for 2 reasons, they inform and you inform using them. thanks, thoved this ai i know i would
I wish I could show this to my dog! She almost ran into a tree today because she wanted to catch a ball that jumped all over the place and I´m not even mentioning her target fixation on food! :P
Dslyecxi, I was wondering as a helicopter pilot what should one set their view distance to? Are there any graphical options that you feel are mandatory as a pilot that are not as an infantryman? What about fixed wing graphics settings vs helicopter?
As a heli pilot, you're usually moving at 150-250km/h. Thats 2.5-4.2km each minute. So if you want to see an enemy a minute before reaching him, then set your view distance to 4km. Adjust accordingly with that method.
Funnily enough I feel this episode will help me become a better Battlefield 4 Attack Helicopter pilot, as I think a lot of my failures are due to target fixation and not being far enough away before commencing an attack run...
The Light That Paints The further away the better, nothing pisses me off more than when I'm driving the AA and the chopper pilot launches all his FFAR before I can effectively engage him myself.
Khugan Sixtyeight "Viper 1-1, I need you to terminate that target IMMEDIATELY. It's killing us down here. GOD DAMMIT, LEFT FLAAAANK! VIPER, TAKE THAT TARGET DOWN, RIGHT NOW! BROKEN ARROW! BROKEN ARROW!"I believe that's sufficient to bring many less experienced pilots into target fixation... *shrug*
Target fixation accounts for a huge number of motorcycle accidents. One of the first things that you need to learn is to look at the position you want to move to, your body will respond to move in that direction. If you dont learn to control your target fixation there'll come a time when you'll end up staring at the thing you least want to hit while driving steadily towards it. I think some of these real life rules will apply more to gaming as VR comes into play.
Despite the fact that I will NEVER be able to become even a passable pilot : ] I love watching a master at his work. (Just don't do any of those spectacular crashes when you're flying the real thing.)
Florian Maslofski I'm pretty sure he records these official videos at 4k, but actually plays the game at.. What was his res? 2560x1600? I forget. I don't know too much about his setup, I doubt he cares much to tell.
I also really think you use something else than just mouse and keyboard, being really accurate is hard with mouse and keyboard. what do you actually use?
Jinx ~ bLue I have done this before myself. A lot of the trick is in the fact that you rarely see AA units more advanced than technicals, or small arms. This greatly contributes to the Littlebird's survivability, as these weapons are more or less the easiest to stay out of their way. Another is to decide what is the best approach to target - is it a high orbit, allowing you good sightlines and the luxury of picking and diving upon your targets, or is the low approach, following the terrain, while giving you much shorter (but that much more surprising, if done right) opportunities to engage targets? Also, what is the enemy using to deny you effecive attack runs? Are the weapons capable of serious harm to the airframe? If so, do you have a way to quickly get out of reach, or get lost behind the horizon? Dive attacks can be very effective at getting out of effective reach of small arms, as you start out high, and by the time you pull out, your airspeed is so high that you're quickly out of the enemy's effective range (Which isn't the range where their weapons can deal damage as much as the range where they can hit you in a somewhat reliable fashion).Littlebirds aren't the easiest helicopters to use, but that just makes them a lot of fun. They certainly require a lot more experience to use than the two-man dedicated attack helicopters. Sadly, my group doesn't use them very often (as a Ghosthawk or Blackhawk can deliver considerably higher amounts of troops, and a Cobra, Apache or Commanche are much superior at the CAS role, thanks to mounted gun, and more positions to attach unguided and guided weaponry on the airframe...) because we have these big, dedicated birds, that need to face heavy armor to have a balance...
***** Hey man, thanks for the answer first of all. But my question was more directed into how to dodge AA-Missiles or something like that. But still, thanks for your answer ... Would love to see +Dslyecxi responding to this
Jinx ~ bLue AA missiles? In a Littlebird? As I recall, the Littlebird lacks early warning systems. As far as I remember the TTP (or maybe an earlier AF episode?) you should pray you can see the launch, and if you do see a rocket heading for you, preemptively toss flares and chaff, while breaking off. General rule for being under a SAM attack in a Littlebird is to hope you have your affairs in order, though.
Jinx ~ bLue Oh! Well, if the SAM is flying your way, say your last prayers! :-D You may also try turning the rear of your helicopter into the missile (as you probably stand a higher crew survival chance then) and start remembering auto-rotation.
This happened to me in real life once, although I wasn't attacking a target from a helicopter, I was trying to recover a dropped potato chip from the kitchen floor and hit my head on the countertop going down.
My approach angle was to steep while trying to ascend up stairs rapidly causing me to fall.......
Josh Ramey Oof, an uncontrolled descent down stairs. Almost as bad as an uncontrolled ascent up stairs.
Danger Ranger Dan i lost it, made my day lol ^^
+Danger Ranger Dan You are a legend.
Dat camera work! We need camera mastery guide!
Agreed! Dslyecxi is not only a master pilot, he's a master cinematographer as well.
throngcleaver I wouldn't know if he's a master cinematographer, but he definitely makes great camera work in Arma 3. I'd love to know how he does it!

This is something I see a lot of new pilots experiencing. Focus on learning to fly first, then balance it with learning to gun :)

Sweet video man, very informative!
OK. How did you get that dual arching shot at 3:54? That was beautiful.
Do you guys ever use attack choppers like the AH1 Cobra or Viper?
YAY NEW EPISODE!

What is the middle eastern style map, first seen around 3:05 ?
Yeh it looks like an interesting map
Looks like an Arma 3 version of Capraia.
It is indeed Capraia.
CornReaper Thank you very much, I have never properly played it in Arma 2, does look great in the Arma 3 engine though, will have to try it out.
Now we just need an "Art of Talking a Pilot into Target Fixation"
Khugan Sixtyeight "Viper 1-1, I need you to terminate that target IMMEDIATELY. It's killing us down here. GOD DAMMIT, LEFT FLAAAANK! VIPER, TAKE THAT TARGET DOWN, RIGHT NOW! BROKEN ARROW! BROKEN ARROW!"I believe that's sufficient to bring many less experienced pilots into target fixation... *shrug*
Fantastic video! Are there any plans for an AFM Art of Flight series?
How are you getting these awesome shots, custom camera script?
How do you fire missiles on the pawnee?
How do you record from different perspectives? Is it a mod or what?

i feel like it was probably harder to show how not to do it. Its probably muscle memory for you to do it right lol
McCoyisTheBest Almost every one of the 'doing it right' examples started with me intending to do it wrong and ending up "missing" the crash.
***** haha i thought it would be like that awesome video as always :D
***** I can relate to that :p
Nice Siren reference... Yay for mythology
Despite the fact that I will NEVER be able to become even a passable pilot : ] I love watching a master at his work. (Just don't do any of those spectacular crashes when you're flying the real thing.)
good stuff man .
dsylexi can you make a guide on how to keep jet gunsight in target ?
This episode was sponsored patreon and Michael Bay
Is the mic quality slightly worse than usual?
Dslyecxi how much fun was the crashing? Looked like you were being inventive in ways to crash
Marksman DLC video coming soon?
Ugh I wish there was a sniper guide like this
What map is at 4:08
what map is that at 3 min
so the 980 enough for 4K?
Depends what for and what CPU you have.
BobTheBeasty
well, he is playing with a 3820K on arma 3, so i was wondering ive that was posible or it was just blown up for less YT artifacts etc
Florian Maslofski I'm pretty sure he records these official videos at 4k, but actually plays the game at.. What was his res? 2560x1600? I forget. I don't know too much about his setup, I doubt he cares much to tell.
slugger449
He actually did care enough to tell, many times. It's 2560x1600 as you said.

Headrock
yeah, thats hat i checked to see that he has a 980 :P was a 680 before i think
I also really think you use something else than just mouse and keyboard, being really accurate is hard with mouse and keyboard. what do you actually use?
Damiaan Moors Mouse, keyboard, TrackIR, rudder pedals - same thing I've always said I use.
*****
you always said it?... I've never caught it in any video haha, my bad. and thanks ^^
Is there a reason you do not use advanced fly model? I am sure Dslyecxi has covered this question, so please anybody can answer it.
MrArapahoe th-cam.com/video/qZWEWasExZ4/w-d-xo.html
Thanks. I thought I even remember you talking about it, however failed when i searched for the video.
Great! It's great! I'm, fucking happy 'Cause I see this again! :)
I remember diving with Hind, thinking everything would work out, the it turns into a brick if it isn't one already.
2:14 ah yes the *oh shit* moment XD
Would it be possible for you to show a guide how to survive an ArmA 3 Mission with an Little Bird? :)

How much choppers was harmed in the making of this video?
I didn't expect this from you......
I'm disappointed.
Nice job on crashing :)
Anyone else get really scared and feel weird before crashing in Arma?
Aaaand don't overfly your target.
