I’m honestly surprised that this is Steven Spielberg’s only animated film he has ever directed. He should definitely do another animated film because I think Tintin is one of Spielberg’s most visually appealing films he has ever done.

The original writer had his Tintin works made into live action many times and found it lacking every time. Before his death he said that he would only let Spielberg do a movie after all the flops beforehand. Sadly it took multiple decades and Hergé never got to see this film but Spielberg went all out and created a fantastic piece of media.
TinTin was adapted in animation before. A very successful film and TV series too. I don't know about the rest of the world, but in most French-speaking countries, the animated series and TV show always rerun on TV.
@@stefannydvorak7919 I didn't mean to insult any previous iterations but from what I've read Herge said they never quite captured his original material.

Herge wanted only Spielberg to make a live action adaptation of Tin tin once he watched the Lost Ark. But the rights were given to Spielberg by the wife of Herge after he passed away. Live action adaptation didn't get through due to multiple reasons until Jackson and Spielberg decided to make an animation versions merging multiple Herge comics. Initially planned as one , it was decided to make a trilogy with Spielberg and Jackson directing the alternate films. Once the 2011 release happened, Edgar Wright went on to work on his third Cornetto film. Speilberg got occupied with multiple other films. Discussions for the plot kept on going until 2016 when Wright dropped out permanently due to time issue with his Baby Driver film. Speilberg kept mentioning the sequel and storylines till late 2018 with the comics to be adapted finalised. Yet the sequels never happened. Considering this as Spielberg's one of the best films, sequels were highly anticipated. But sadly no more news regarding the same.
"I have one bullet" is my favorite badass line in any movie. This is very faithful in tone and scope to the source material -- it is based on one of the best known Tintin graphic novels The Secret of the Unicorn
Fun fact, if you didn’t already know this: the street artist painting Tintin at the start of the film is Hergé, the original artist/author of the Tintin comic. This was both an homage to a long-running in-joke (Hergé liked to draw himself into scenes as background characters) and an homage from Spielberg to Hergé himself (the two of them actually met shortly before Hergé’s death, and were fans of each other’s work. In fact, it’s likely that Spielberg was inspired by Tintin when co-creating Indiana Jones, and Hergé, who had famously nixed the idea of a Tintin film following two failed previous attempts, professed that in his opinion Spielberg was the only director who could do Tintin properly).
As a kid who read every Tintin comic book multiple times, this movie excited me when I learned it was coming, and boy did it deliver. The movie mainly used three books for this story: The Crab with Golden Claws, The Secret of the Unicorn, and Red Rackahm's Treasure. The Crab with Golden Claws was Captain Haddock's first appearance in the series, and he was in every single one afterwards. That story was Tintin coming into contact with Opium drug traffickers, in which he was kidnapped and taken aboard the Karaboudjan, where Allan had taken control of the ship from Haddock. The Secret of the Unicorn introduced the main story we see in the movie here, and the ending of the film was based of the ending of Red Rackahm's Treasure. They actually found the ship first, and the treasure, which was Rackham's initially (although he did attack and capture the Unicorn), was found in the globe and was the only gold in the story. Thomson and Thompson have been recurring characters since the Secrets of the Pharaoh (the second book), and did in fact go after the pickpocket in The Secrets of the Unicorn. Boy was this longer than I thought it would be, but all in all, this movie used a lot of the source material, including the sea plane hijacking. I love this movie and am hoping against all hope that the sequel is at least just as good as this one.
Spielberg should've known that ,for a Tintin movie, American audiences were going to be a tough crowd. European comics are only starting to catch on in the US. But it was in the French-Canadian market where they'd sell better, back in the day. With Asterix dominating most of the Franco-Belgian market, there were French-Canadian readers as second option. For Herge, and others such Morris (Lucky Luke's author), Peyo (The smurfs), etc.
@@MrJamaigar Tough, but not impossible. I'm American, after all, and I came across the series at the public library. My first book with the series was The Broken Ear, and I read and reread the rest in the years that followed.
As a european (swede) I was surprised when this was released by how unfamiliar most americans were (and still is) with Tintin. Here I'd argue he is as recognizable as Superman or Batman. Lifelong Tintin fan and I adored this movie.
I love the Tintin stories. I grew up on the cartoon and then discovered the original comic strips. Of course the animation in some parts of the strips are questionable nowadays, but the characters and the stories themselves are amazing. What I loved about this film was that as well as essentially smashing together 3 stories (then adding some of their own storytelling) there are constant references to different stories everywhere, little Easter Eggs for fans, and I don't just mean the newspaper clippings at the start of the film. One of the more hiding in plain sight ones is the statue on top of the fountain that is a Golden Crab, referencing the Crab with the Golden Claws. Love it. Oh and the cartoonist who asked if he had drawn Tintin before at the start of the film, is Herge. In all the comic strips a blond haired guy always shows up in the background somewhere, who is supposed to be Herge drawing himself. You can tell that all those involved genuinely love Tintin.
This reaction is about to re-ignite my Tintin phase again lmao, I remember being blown away by this in the theater and I'm still upset Peter Jackson hasn't yet followed through on his promise to direct the sequel. Apparently the agreement between him and Spielberg was that Spielberg would direct the first movie and Jackson the second. It's 2024, Peter, we're still waiting 😂 Also yes, this was mocap and shot entirely in one room, which is exceptionally impressive given the scope of certain scenes like the motorcycle chase (which was filmed in one continuous shot). The behind-the-scenes stuff about how the movie was made is really worth looking at. Spielberg had a device sort of like a video game controller with a screen on it that allowed him to see what the "set" would look like animated while they were still filming. This entire production was a technological marvel and the effort that went into making it wasn't nearly appreciated enough by the industry
This is one of the most amazing animated movies ive ever seen, my husband threw it on and we have honestly never heard anything about this movie or TinTin at all and we were blown away. Completely blown away.
- Secret of the Unicorn and Red Rackham's Treasure which are the main inspirations for this. - The Seven Crystal Balls and Prisoners of the Sun came right after and are the first Tintin comics that Spielberg picked up after first hearing about Tintin. - Good stand alone Tintin books include The Red Sea Sharks, Tintin in Tibet and Tintin in America (one of the earliest ones)
I ADORED this film when it came out in theatres. Whenever I’m feeling down, I pop on the motorcycle chase or the ship fight just to marvel in its creation and the effects.
You can tell this film was made by people who not only respect the source material but love it too. Love for Tintin is the key ingredient to giving Tintin movies their heart, and I hope the same writers come back for the sequel. We're only missing one other big character, Professor Calculus, so I'm eager to see him join the Tintin family (and his hilarious relationship to Haddock). As for sequels...man there's just so many good Tintin stories to choose from. The double albums Seven Crystal Balls/Prisoners of the Sun would be cool, and I'd love to see them eventually build to the moon adventure (imagine the animation for the rocket).
I had forgotten about this movie, but started to remember everything as it went on. I had watched this film so many times when I was younger as well as the animated episodes/films

It's an open ending because the story was actually separated into two comic books! However, this movie takes from both the first and second part, as well as from another totally unrelated one where Tintin meets Haddock for the first time, so I wonder how they would have made the second movie. Although there won't be a sequel, you can find out what happens by reading the comics or watching the series!
They say the movies are gonna happen. They plan on making two more. Just don’t know when everyone on the film will be able to work on it I suppose. But working on it is better then it’s not happening

Steven Moffat was hired by Spielberg to write the film, but he asked if he could be released when he was offered the Doctor Who show-runner job so his mates Edgar Wright & Joe Cornish stepped in to help finish it.
This movie was written by Steven Moffat who wrote for Doctor Who including The Empty Child two parter, BLINK, girl in the fireplace, and Silence in the Library two parter. He then became showrunner for the 11th and 12th doctors Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi
"I keep expecting the Indiana Jones Music to ramp up!" - HAH! I said literally the same thing when I watched the movie. Well. In German. But yes, this has a lot of the flair of an Indy movie. Tintin was my favourite comic book growing up. There was also a BBC UK cartoon series my family would watch repeatedly. I saw this in 3D and it was worth every penny. The BTS is pretty interesting as well.

My mom used to collect all the books of the series back when she was around 13. While i'm used to collect the 90s animated series from Battery that got 1 free Video CD contain 1 or 2 part Episode. Hearing that they make a movie of Tintin makes me and my mom excited to see. Fun fact: This movie was made because when Indiana Jones release in France, one of the critic compared the movie to Tintin series. He (Spielberg)so into the series when rad the comic that he make the movie alongside Peter Jackson (suprisingly a huge fans of the comic). Herge, the creator of Tintin would love to see Spielberg direction for Tintin, but sadly he died and never see this amazing full length adaptation after countless terrible live action movie and some of animated movie with original story.
This was a great movie. Thanks for the reaction. A great example where a movie based on a comic book turned out great and captured the spirit of the books (not counting Marvel, DC and so on). Tintin, Asterix, Spirou & Fantasio, Gaston and Clever & Smart comics were always on my bookshelf when I was a kid and a teen. Well, actually they are still there with me and I still read them with joy.

Tintin books have been in my house when I was growing up since before I could read and I can honestly say you can't get a better movie adaptation than this. There have been well done basic animated movies and live action adaptations done with both English and foreign languages throughout the years but I feel this particular production captures the spirit, humor and sense of adventure very accurately. It's actually a combination of different stories with a few improvised scenes that is done exceedingly well. I did watch this in the theater when it first came out but after rewatching it I am still amazed at the level of detail in the visuals and animation.

Best comic strip adaptation is the "For Better or For Worse" animated series. The theme song is amazing and the Farley episode is guaranteed to send you on an emotional journey!
Dropping everything to watch this! Growing up I was one of the few kids in America it felt like that read the Tintin comics. In college this was a opening night watch for me. Loved it, all the little nods to the comics, the scene transitions (that scene of the Unicorn cresting the sand dunes of the desert and bringing the ocean with it might actually be one of my favorite scene transitions ever), the action set pieces and the overall sense of adventure! Thank you for reacting
I always prefer stylized cartoony artstyles, but this movie was a proof that you can do this uncanny hyperrealistic style and not have it look like greyish sludge, unlike Disney's mo-cap flops from that era.
I have been waiting for the follow-up to this awesome movie since 2011, and Spielberg was supposed to produce and Peter Jackson was to direct the sequel, but both were busy with their own projects since then, so nothing so far. As for the comics, I liked the 2-parter the Seven Crystal Balls and the Temple of the Sun.
When Tintin I immediately think of Herge's "Adventures of Tintin" series. I've owned Tintin in Tibet for years and always wished for physical copies of the other stories. This movie such a great movie for Tintin, I always come back to rewatch it.
Wow! The Adventures of TinTin on the Reel Rejects!? This is a very underrated movie, such a great movie. Glad it's getting more recognition. 👍 And yes, in the intro that painter was Herge, the creator of the comics, and yes, those were original arts of Tintin and the characters.
Leaving out traditional superhero stuff, I'd say Scott Pilgrim. Then there's the Hellboy movies and Dredd, but those are kinda superhero-esque. I also dig Josie and the Pussycats and Mystery Men, which are off the beaten path even if the latter is another superhero story.
I remember watching this movie for the first time when I was 13 in middle school in I believe was my 8th grade french class, the teacher wanted to give us a special treat and he did 😄💕
Jean Pierre Talbot does a wonderful Tintin, he played him in two movies in the 60s, only one was dubbed in English from the original french though. The Golden Fleece (the one dubbed) and the Blue Oranges. Worth a watch if you can find them.
I love the movie - while it doesn't stick 100% to the "original script" (it's based on two comic books from the series that tell the story of Tim meeting Haddock for the first time, the Secret of the Unicorn and the Treasure of Rackam the Red.) it stays pretty damned close in all the important bits. I would never have thought it, but the "realistic" version of Herge's more cartoonish looking characters like Alan (the guy with the long nose), Haddock, the Butler and so forth works bloody good and Tim looking like a normal human at first was a little weird, but: He actually looks a LOT like the kid who played Tim... ah, sorry, Tintin (Tim is his German name) in 2 French movies from the 60s... And the voicework is the cherry on top. I have the feeling that a lot of love was used for this movie. :)
You brought up the possibility of a Spielberg movie without John Williams as composer. Because he did _Ready Player One_ with Alan Silvestri as composer.
I'm Belgian and grew up on Tintin comics and animated series! I'm not as sweet on this movie but it' not because it's bad in an way, I'm just used to the original and therefore this feels a bit off. This movie is actually several of the comics mixed together! Kind of like a Tintin speedrun? Mostly it's "the secret of the unicorn" (duh, it's the title of the movie), but there's also part of "the treasure of Red Rackham" as well as "the crab with golden claws" ie "le crabe aux pinces d'or" which was the comic book/episode where he meets the Captain Haddock (although that one was about drugs and there's none of that here). There might be more but I haven't read them in a while. The artist who draws Tintin at the beginning of the movie is Hergé, the creator of Tintin! He also drew himself in each comic book, it's a fun little easter egg to find. It doesn't look like they'll do a sequel since the movie didn't do well, but if you want to know what happens next, you should read the comics or watch the series! Some of the comic books were one shots where a story was wrapped up by the end of the book, but others like this one were part of a pair. The first was "the secret of the unicorn" and the second one was "the treasure of Red Rackham". They took from both of them for this movie so it's like a patchwork all out of order, but in "the treasure of Red Rackham" they're going at sea to find the actual treasure! I would recommend reading/watching the comics/series in the order they came out, since more and more characters are added as the comics go on. For example, Captain Haddock only shows up in the 9th comic book, and Tintin works mostly alone before that. Some of the first comics are problematic because of some racist depictions but the following ones are nice!
The Adventures of Tintin is WAAAYY more of an Uncharted movie, than the Uncharted movie was. Chase sequences, music, locations, adrenaline fueled action, all the feeling of the Uncharted games in this film. Everything the Uncharted movie lacked
Yes, the portrait artist in the first scene is a likeness of Hergé. Unfortunately they messed up the original story by combining different book's storylines and adding new plots at the end. Tintin meets Haddock in Crab with the Golden Claws, a drug smuggling adventure, Karaboudjan, etc. The Secret of the Unicorn is a double story with Red Racham's Treasure, the model ships, Tintin kidnapped to Marlinspike Hall followed by treasure hunt to the island, wreck diving and meeting Calculus through his shark submarine. They could have started with CWTGC as the first in the series, followed by the rest of the books and created a great series over the years. Red Sea Sharks was the favourite as a kid in the '70's, but Tintin in Tibet the most beautiful and moving. Seven Crystal Balls/Empire of the Sun also great detective adventure.
Hated this movie when it came out cuz I didn’t like the 3D animation (big love for the original Herge animations) but after a couple years I quickly fell in love with adaptation and it’s 3D animation (ironically) as a true love letter and perfected adaptation from Peter Jackson! I can now say hats off for this movie, all performances, and the 3D animation (which holds up exceptionally well). Thanks for reading this comment and cheers to the new year (2024)!!!
This movie merges two comic books, with elements from other movies. And the comics have awesome fights and chase scenes, so the movie feels really close to a lot of material.
I remember watching this as a kid. Im an sad that there was not a sequel to this movie. I loved the animation and art style. Its an unappreciated treasure.
Same here, I love every single Tintin books and I do hope for the secret they should do The Temple Of The Sun arc with Seven Crystal Balls/Prisoners Of The Sun.
I mean I’ve never thought of this till now, but I do think Tintin is the most accurate comic strip out to screen. I think it captures exactly the feel and vibe of the comics. I didn’t think it until John asked, but this might actually be the best I’ve seen. I don’t know if favorite but defiantly the best. And fun fact though I’m sure someone has mentioned it. Herge was approached by many people asking to adapt his comics into a movie and he said he would only ever allow his comics to be adapted into a movie if the director was Stephen Spielberg. And was he right about that cos he did a crazy amazing job!
I remember watching this theaters when it came and thought it was awesome and it still is. I never read the books but I did watch the animated series and other movies that were made back then. It’s funny I was thinking yesterday that you guys should do a video on this film😂.
I also found a very old documentary about Herge and how we wrote for an independent newspaper which was secretly part of a resistance against the Nazis.
I watched and read a lot of Tintin in my childhood and this was my first movie in 3d at theater when I was 8 years old, one of my best memories! This was so well made, such an amazing tribute to the legacy of Tintin
I'll always remember this movie because I had an idea to walk in with two tickets, walked out the back door with my one buddy and gave two other friends our ripped tickets so we only paid for 2 not 4. I apologize to the film but we were teenagers and it was awesome
The original animated series was a staple of my childhood. Snowy always was the MVP though as a kid I do remember being continuously worried about his safety
This is a remake of the Secret of the Univorn comic TV series, book by Herge. (In the series, Sakatine was a collector. But in this, hes Captin Haddock's rival) Tinrin two was never made.

Interesting Fun Fact: In The Adventures Of Tintin cartoon animated series, Hergé also made tons of cameos in every episode like Alfred Hitchcock's cameos.
@TheImaginator972 watched this movie when I was younger, and haven't rewatched it. About to see it on here. I had no clue about all those facts. Super impressive guy that created this 👏🏻
I’m honestly surprised that this is Steven Spielberg’s only animated film he has ever directed. He should definitely do another animated film because I think Tintin is one of Spielberg’s most visually appealing films he has ever done.
Well, he also directed _Ready Player One_ and at least half of that was animated.

I wish Indiana Jones was done in this style. I understand some people don't like when an actors likeness is taken but if done properly this will do well.

And Tintin is belgian 🇧🇪
It's 2024, Peter, we're still waiting 😂
Also yes, this was mocap and shot entirely in one room, which is exceptionally impressive given the scope of certain scenes like the motorcycle chase (which was filmed in one continuous shot).
I vividly remember this being one of my first Imax experiences i can fully remember, there’s bits and pieces of Superman Returns.
What's the best Tintin comic to start with???
They're mostly unconnected stories, but I'd recommend you starting with the first one, “Tintin in the Land of the Soviets"
@@thedoctor4327I think they picked inspiration from “The Crab with the Golden Claws", I think that's when Haddock first appears in the series
My foster parents gifted me "Tintin: The crab with the golden claws" for my 10th birthday. I loved that book so much!

I ADORED this film when it came out in theatres. Whenever I’m feeling down, I pop on the motorcycle chase or the ship fight just to marvel in its creation and the effects.
4:08 - That is indeed how Tintin looks in the comic series, and not only that the painter is a cameo of the series creator Hergé
The desert scene is one of the most beautiful animations i've ever seen
Saw this on 3d when it came out, and in those basement sequences the motes of dust floating around were amazing. Detail in this movie is incredible.
No other movie or show has a car chase scene this good. I go back and watch this every few months. It looks incredible
I had forgotten about this movie, but started to remember everything as it went on. I had watched this film so many times when I was younger as well as the animated episodes/films
I never understood why they never made a sequel. I love this movie and it has an open ending.
It lost nearly $150m.

Steven Moffat was hired by Spielberg to write the film, but he asked if he could be released when he was offered the Doctor Who show-runner job so his mates Edgar Wright & Joe Cornish stepped in to help finish it.
Only people who have read Tintin comics can recognise that they pulled certain scenes right out of the comic books.

This movie is the most underrated animated movie. It's a masterpiece and I don't say that lightly.
This is the underrated movie ever and I cant believe there was no sequel to it. Its amazinly amazing.
I saw this in the theater. It might be my favorite 3D I've ever seen in the theater. It looked phenomenal.
This is one of my all-time favorite movies.
When Tintin I immediately think of Herge's "Adventures of Tintin" series. I've owned Tintin in Tibet for years and always wished for physical copies of the other stories. This movie such a great movie for Tintin, I always come back to rewatch it.
YESSS!!! This is the perfect way end of the year! More people watching my childhood film!

I'm still waiting on a sequel to this movie, which has been stuck in development hell for 10 years.
Holy shit, they are reacting to Spielberg’s Masterpiece!!!!
Wow! The Adventures of TinTin on the Reel Rejects!? This is a very underrated movie, such a great movie. Glad it's getting more recognition. 👍
And yes, in the intro that painter was Herge, the creator of the comics, and yes, those were original arts of Tintin and the characters.
I remember watching this movie for the first time when I was 13 in middle school in I believe was my 8th grade french class, the teacher wanted to give us a special treat and he did 😄💕
This movie is truly epic. Seriously underrated.
Also, yes, Spirits Within stars Ming Na Wen
this was one of my favorite movies growing up
You brought up the possibility of a Spielberg movie without John Williams as composer. Because he did _Ready Player One_ with Alan Silvestri as composer.
This Is Copy Of Beowulf 2007 By Robert Zemeckis After Alan Silvestri Meet Ready Player One
I saw it in theaters in both regular and 3D. I used to work at a theater when it came out. It’s a great movie both ways
Some of the first comics are problematic because of some racist depictions but the following ones are nice!
that man at the beginning who paint tin tin portrait is a came of Herge himself
*cameo
The Adventures of Tintin is WAAAYY more of an Uncharted movie, than the Uncharted movie was.
Chase sequences, music, locations, adrenaline fueled action, all the feeling of the Uncharted games in this film. Everything the Uncharted movie lacked
Yeah Tom Holland Is a Live Action Of The Adventures Of Tintin The Secret Of Unicorn and Uncharted
I grew up reading the Tintin comics and watching the series. And I really like this movie!!
This is one of my favorite movies ever!!! Sad that we never got a sequel…
This movie merges two comic books, with elements from other movies. And the comics have awesome fights and chase scenes, so the movie feels really close to a lot of material.

Same here, I love every single Tintin books and I do hope for the secret they should do The Temple Of The Sun arc with Seven Crystal Balls/Prisoners Of The Sun.
I remember when this came out. I embed laughing pretty hard with my step brother. Good times
This is the best Indiana Jones film to come out after the original trilogy!

I remember watching the Tintin cartoon on Teletoon Retro.
I'll always remember this movie because I had an idea to walk in with two tickets, walked out the back door with my one buddy and gave two other friends our ripped tickets so we only paid for 2 not 4. I apologize to the film but we were teenagers and it was awesome
Underrated gem
Yes it was performance captured film
This is one of the most underrated animated films out there. It's actually a masterpiece 👌
Would've loved a sequel to this movie.
The original animated series was a staple of my childhood. Snowy always was the MVP though as a kid I do remember being continuously worried about his safety
This is a remake of the Secret of the Univorn comic TV series, book by Herge.
(In the series, Sakatine was a collector. But in this, hes Captin Haddock's rival)
Tinrin two was never made.
I love this movie. Love the comic books!
Ooh yes! I grew up on tintin comics and this is one of my fave movies of all time! Hope you guys like it :)
