So I usually daily drive mine. The original 33yr old head gaskets recently started showing signs of failure so I’m about to pull the heads and replace em. Up until my coolant level started dropping off my car got around 25mpg and that’s with a Blitz DSBC boost controller, TD04HL-19T turbos, 255 Walbro, RC 785cc injectors, Chrome ecu, E-manage Blue with optional ignition control harness, and optional map sensor, and a Gen 2 MAF Translator with a 3.5 inch Corvette MAF. I run the stock cat back but 3 inch custom down pipe with 15 degree merge collector for the rear turbo, and a stage 2 clutch. It’s a solid 430-450whp car on about 18psi. The car has been through its issues, and the biggest part is perseverance and actually caring enough to fix the things the previous owners never did. My car was found in a back yard half taken apart, but it was 100% stock so I took a chance plunked down $1,500 and started fixing all the crap wrong with a car that sat for 14yrs unprotected from the weather. Is it a lot of work? Yea. Was it all worth it? To me it is, but to people who don’t have the sack to stick with it, and fix all the issues one at a time, you’ll ditch the car and call it trash. These cars can be totally daily driver reliable. But you have to fix the 25+ yrs of neglect the car has had or you’ll be working on it more than you will be driving it. I opted to fix mechanical and electrical issues first. I’ll make my car pretty later when I get the last few mechanical details taken care of. Even my rough old 1rst gen VR-4 still gets compliments! Lol

Larger injectors and turbos don't affect the fuel mileage much if it's tuned properly. Not until you really step on the gas that is lol. That's literally the entire point of a turbo. Increase power without increasing actual displacement. My old VR-4 got about the same gas mileage. It sucks having to pay for 93 octane though.
@@willvr4 Exactly. It’s in the tune, and unless you’re running E85 (which requires 40% more injector pulse width) your mileage should be the same or better. We can actually get 100 octane out of the pump here in Texas, but it’s higher than Willie Nelson…..93 is high enough to give a bird a nose bleed depending on where you live around here.
Most guys I know that had these back in the day invested in a engine lift and learned how to pull the motor. That engine bay has no room same for the 300z guys. When you get it right it's a great platform but working on it oooohhh boy pray you got some good buddies and plenty of instruction resources.
The engine bay is nowhere as bad as 300zx. You can literally do everything with the engine in the car. You just have to remove some hoses to free up space. I don't know why people say 3,000 GT engine bay is hard to work on and I have seen way worse engine bays. Nissan r32-34 gtr has worse engine bay.
As a person who dailies a 92 3000gt VR4 you really don’t get enough of the 3000gt sounds😂 it sounds soooo nice. I feel like pulling it at each stop… but I have to resist cuz I don’t want to go broke on fixing it lol
Yeah, the 6g72TT engine is so unique and nice sounding. Half the time I didn't even turn on my stereo and just put the windows down and listened to the exhaust note.
Hey Miguel! I've been watching your content for atleast 2 years now! And last year around September, I bought myself a 3000GT (not VR4 unfortunately) But I took the challenge for myself to have my first project + dream car in my driveway. and bro, i'll tell you the many problems I have gone through and biggest change up was buying a WHOLE brand new motor from having a SOHC to DOHC, which is a decent upgrade! It's been a year since I havent driven the car but its getting the touch-up and love it needs and watching your videos pushes me to finish my 3K. Is it reliable, my answer is the same as yours.. but when I first got my GT the feeling and the aura the car give off definitely makes your day even better. Thanks Miguel for your videos! I hope to see more of the 3K content and the EK hatch build!
I daily my R/T Turbo Stealth and I love it. It was my first car I’m 19 and have driven it daily for the past 2 and half years. Driving it to high school and no one knowing what it was that was probably the best feeling and the amount of attention I get with it just puts a smile on my face everyday some people don’t even know what the car is but they love it and the sounds the car makes I have a GReddy blowoff and it sounds amazing i personally love driving my car yea it gives me problems but i think that’s what you take on by driving 30 years cars and im not complaining love it
Haha that was my experience in high school as well. Nobody knew wtf it was except the car guys. Girls also thought I had money because it was in good condition and looked expensive...even though it was a $6,000 old mitsubishi.

I just got a European 1999 3000gt. Is basically a 1995 since they didn't change anything, so it has the active Aero, ESC. It is stock except an aftermarket Cat back and has only 56k miles (90k km) on it. Looking forward to driving next year after the winter.
Ive got a super rare bone stock Nairobi beige VR4 from 91. I drive it 4-5 times a week. Take It on long road trips, uphill race the mountains with my friends, commute in stop and go traffic. Ive got about 95% confidence ill make it back in one piece every time i take it out XD Thinking of selling it for the right price, cant decide though.
I've said it 100 times... this is my favorite car on TH-cam. I have an SL that I've daily driven. I've done all the maintenance required. Runs like a top!
The 3000gt vr4 is a victim of engine bay intimidation 😂 number 1 problem with the vr4 is the fact it doesn’t have aftermarket support be it stock remans or performance and I’m a mechanic and it’s a headache when something breaks or fail you either have to find interchangeable parts or 3k dismantlers all in all it’s like driving around in a late 80s early 90s Ferrari 😂
I put 40.000 miles on my VR4 in two years everyday driver 🤗 it's when you start to modify them that they start having problems IF you don't know what your doing 🤔

It kind of sounds like it sitting for 8 years really did a number on it. I don't think all 3000GTs are that bad. But again you are spot on getting a care as close to stock as possible because it sounds like whoever owned that 3000GT modded it and didn't really take care of it and baby it.
Na mitsubishi is very reliable, my wife has a 2002 galant vr4 manual and daily drove it for 3years everyday straight to university and never had a problem.
If you’re on a tunable ecu I’d take a look at the cold start maps and if you’re running lean, add a few percent to the map. If you’re still stock ecu/stock injectors, it could be anything from poor injector spray pattern to turbo system leaks or poor MAF sensor signals from a dirty or contaminated or failing MAF, especially since it’s only doing this when it’s cold.
Could I daily drive mine? Yes. It is properly maintained, has working AC and heater and even on e85 is fairly good fuel mileage thanks to the gearing, the larger than stock turbos, and full time closed loop fuel control via haltech Wideband o2 sensors. I’ve also replaced all the unreliable electronics with modern stuff. Would I daily it? No. I like keeping my fun/special cars for fun/special driving not boring commuting. Helps keep the car special when you don’t drive it every day on the same route every time.

I had both NA Sohc and Dohc at one point. The Base models with Sohc were somewhat easier to work on they're just very slow. Even with a NA Dohc or Twin Turbo I'd have another car as backup when it needs work done.
Hey bro have you re checked your base fuel pressure since you fixed the gas tank rust issue etc? Maybe the reason you running rich now you have no blockages. Remember to set it to 43psi with vac line disconnected and blocked off. And for cold start check the fiav on the throttle body. ?? I don’t daily mine but it goes to the track often. 450whp and doesn’t miss a beat!
In past i used to daily driving my three previous gto's, two of them non turbo-the SR models, the other one a twin turbo 5speed- and the were reliable but when i bought these-the first one in 1999- where 8 to12 years old. I only had to change the clutch on the twin turbo and one night the PTU failed and had to change it. I own now a 95' gto twin turbo, bought it back in 2017. As they grow older you have to change everything in the car.Its just a matter of age and bad maintainance or abuse of previous owners. To keep your mind safe you have to change whatever you can before it even fails. Because eventually they ll fail.Time is against to an old car owner.Thats why i would never daily now a 3000gt.
This model will be my next car for sure. Pretty rare here in the UK but I want something older to go along side my current MINI JCW. I think it'll be the perfect second car.and something good to build up slowly.
I think you just need a tune for the larger injectors you put in earlier, since you have a 98 it should have a tunable ECU. Have an experienced social 3sx member do a basic Fuel & Air tune(injector scaling & VE Tune) on it so you are idling at 14.7afr then down the road when you are done with all your mods get an full professional tune to you liking. It just looks like the o2s can't properly auto tune because the car is very lean off throttle(gasping for fuel) and very rich on throttle(drowning in fuel). You'll really love the car after that! I daily drive a 20t speed density 94 3000 VR4 on a self tuned Chrome ECU boosting to up 25psi and it is very reliable! I started off on a dohc base model and learned my way around the platform that way. BTW even the black ones turns alot of heads, it has an exotic proportion, low and wide.
Miguel! Check your ground points. Might be why she doesn’t like cold weather and explains the occasional leaning out too since metal expands in the cold.
@ that’s what I meant to say lol. I always mix the two up but you are correct. From a molecular standpoint, metal expands under heat due to the molecules pushing outward. Or at least I think that’s how I remember it 😅
Mines not a vr-4, but its been pretty good save a few growing pains. Most of them causedby modifications and getting everything dialed in. Caveat that the engine mine is also built top to bottom. And while its a relatively fresh engine aftermarket engines also arent known for reliability. It Fires up and drives every time. Even pushing the crap out of it to 9k rpms where it made 305whp@8800rpms without forced induction or nitrous. So I cant really complain, It SHOULD be far more unreliable considering what ive done to mine and it just works.
@@MiguelDsm shit well its kinda beyond just a engine rebuild. its that plus transmission rebuild, Ripped out the engine harness, Built a new one to go with the haltech ecu, Removed the body harness and built that from scratch as well. new fuel pump, -6an lines, suspension was converted to a vr-4. So it as the vr4 bbk, oem dash is gone replaced with an aluminum one with my own switches put in, Roll cage is in. Be a shorter list of what i havent rebuilt lol.
@@estebanoussehmine5019 biggest thing that made the difference was swapping out the oem intake for a holley hi-ram adapter from breton performance in puerto rico. They were originally for the 6g74, But i made it work on a 6g72 and did the write up, Install video, list of changes i had to do. Now breton performance engineering sells them as kits for the 6g72. But that intake allowed me to make power way beyond 6500rpms were the oem and the typical after market intakes start to drop off. Like this shit goes nuts past 7,000rpms. all the way to 9,000rpms. It was outrunning 450cc injectors. Put a bigger fuel pump on it and just squeaked by with 12.5:1 afr up to 9k rpms. But injectors are at 85% duty cycle so we couldnt run E85. So theyre still some power left on the table. After the tune I put on a water/methanol kit as well mainly to drop combustion and intake temps so i could run even more timing which for now can take the place of e85 since theres only 3 e85 stations in phoenix
My uncle has a 3000GT for like 20+ years he told me it has to much engine problems he gave up on it lol I don’t blame him he put in so much money in it and it keeps breaking down.
My biggest concern is replacement parts especially body parts . As far as a daily driver its a 3. 0 liter V6 with a twin turbo making 300 HP . Its engine should be relatively understressed compared to a modern turbo engine . We have naturally aspirated engines that make 100 per liter .

its probably the oil pressure in the engine if its in the mornings, my car does the same, until oil pressure goes up, mines burns oil too so u have to maintain it
I mea n to be fair: to daily drive any car that's over 25 years old is a lesson in patience. They'll always fret or complain or just decide they're not i the mood. I just had that with the CB and even the EVO with lil niggling issues, but that's to be expected. Older they get, it's just to drive them at least once every 2 weeks or so.
Got a bone stock European spec 3000gt 4 months ago it got 116k km now (10k are from me). Active aero works mostly altho somtimes the wing decides to stay up. (will try and fix that over the winter) Pretty shure il get the ECS back up and running in spring. So far it has overheatet once since the temp switch died and it dint turn on the fans lol. But otherwise no problems, even on cold days, it is just extreamly thirsty compared to normal cars over here in europe. I wish you good luck with yours these cars are amazing when in working order but a nightmare to fix.
I have a 8g galant vr4 so it’s the 2.5 v6 and it’s the exact same until it’s warm..especially if you haven’t driven it in a couple days…sometimes I have to unplug the MAF just to get around 😂.
As someone who daily drove a VR-4 for a handful of years, I would advise against it. It's an OLD grand touring car with parts that are becoming more and more difficult to find, expensive, and most mechanics don't even know how to work on them. I owned mine back when you'd still see them on the road from time to time in the early to mid 2000's. I imagine it's even worse now and more expensive to own.

I had a dodge stealth as my first car back in 2008. As a kid who just got out of highschool that didnt know much about cars I can safely say... it was a bad call lol. However everyone pretty much knew who I was just because of the car, everyone wanted a ride in it which sucked cuz it never worked lol.
It should be noted, if you find a mechanic who doesn't charge more to work on your 3/s, RUN. That dude doesn't know what he's doing and you're gonna be the one who finds out first he doesn't know what he's doing.
Curious on your thoughts on non Mitsu swapped Mitsubishi cars. I love all these cars but would swap the motors to something else of my preference to not deal with the hassle of the original ones 😂

I tour for a living in music and it definitely doesn't like it when it sits. It love to be driven. Been fighting fuel pressure issues but new altantor solved that. I think mitsubishis in general are reliable. My 2011 lancer is still going strong at 155,000 miles 💪🏼

I think you just need a tune for the larger injectors you put in earlier, since you have a 98 it should have a tunable ECU. Have an experienced social 3sx member do a basic Fuel & Air tune(injector scaling & VE Tune) on it so you are idling at 14.7afr then down the road when you are done with all your mods get an full professional tune to you liking. It just looks like the o2s can't properly auto tune because the car is very lean off throttle(gasping for fuel) and very rich on throttle(drowning in fuel). You'll really love the car after that! I daily drive a 20t speed density 94 3000 VR4 on a self tuned Chrome ECU boosting to up 25psi and it is very reliable! I started off on a dohc base model and learned my way around the platform that way. BTW even the black ones turns alot of heads, it has an exotic proportion, low and wide.
It’s currently reflashed on the stock 98 ecu. Hoping to get it sorted out soon
I would not dare to long drive that because finding spare parts for that is a hellish task.
My jdm 2nd gen is crazy reliable iv had zero issues, but it’s also completely unmolested.

Metal shrinks when it gets cold, expands when hot.
@ that’s what I meant to say lol. I always mix the two up but you are correct. From a molecular standpoint, metal expands under heat due to the molecules pushing outward. Or at least I think that’s how I remember it 😅

Mines not a vr-4, but its been pretty good save a few growing pains. Most of them causedby modifications and getting everything dialed in. Caveat that the engine mine is also built top to bottom. And while its a relatively fresh engine aftermarket engines also arent known for reliability. It Fires up and drives every time. Even pushing the crap out of it to 9k rpms where it made 305whp@8800rpms without forced induction or nitrous. So I cant really complain, It SHOULD be far more unreliable considering what ive done to mine and it just works.

@@MiguelDsm shit well its kinda beyond just a engine rebuild. its that plus transmission rebuild, Ripped out the engine harness, Built a new one to go with the haltech ecu, Removed the body harness and built that from scratch as well. new fuel pump, -6an lines, suspension was converted to a vr-4. So it as the vr4 bbk, oem dash is gone replaced with an aluminum one with my own switches put in, Roll cage is in. Be a shorter list of what i havent rebuilt lol.

@@estebanoussehmine5019 biggest thing that made the difference was swapping out the oem intake for a holley hi-ram adapter from breton performance in puerto rico. They were originally for the 6g74, But i made it work on a 6g72 and did the write up, Install video, list of changes i had to do. Now breton performance engineering sells them as kits for the 6g72. But that intake allowed me to make power way beyond 6500rpms were the oem and the typical after market intakes start to drop off. Like this shit goes nuts past 7,000rpms. all the way to 9,000rpms. It was outrunning 450cc injectors. Put a bigger fuel pump on it and just squeaked by with 12.5:1 afr up to 9k rpms. But injectors are at 85% duty cycle so we couldnt run E85. So theyre still some power left on the table. After the tune I put on a water/methanol kit as well mainly to drop combustion and intake temps so i could run even more timing which for now can take the place of e85 since theres only 3 e85 stations in phoenix

Saw a perfect example of the VR4 here in NOVA about a year ago, before that… maybe 10+ years before? It still fit right in with other sports cars.
My uncle has a 3000GT for like 20+ years he told me it has to much engine problems he gave up on it lol I don’t blame him he put in so much money in it and it keeps breaking down.

My biggest concern is replacement parts especially body parts .
As far as a daily driver its a 3. 0 liter V6 with a twin turbo making 300 HP . Its engine should be relatively understressed compared to a modern turbo engine . We have naturally aspirated engines that make 100 per liter .

its probably the oil pressure in the engine if its in the mornings, my car does the same, until oil pressure goes up, mines burns oil too so u have to maintain it

I mea n to be fair: to daily drive any car that's over 25 years old is a lesson in patience. They'll always fret or complain or just decide they're not i the mood. I just had that with the CB and even the EVO with lil niggling issues, but that's to be expected. Older they get, it's just to drive them at least once every 2 weeks or so.

Got a bone stock European spec 3000gt 4 months ago it got 116k km now (10k are from me).
Active aero works mostly altho somtimes the wing decides to stay up. (will try and fix that over the winter)
Pretty shure il get the ECS back up and running in spring.
So far it has overheatet once since the temp switch died and it dint turn on the fans lol.
But otherwise no problems, even on cold days, it is just extreamly thirsty compared to normal cars over here in europe.
I wish you good luck with yours these cars are amazing when in working order but a nightmare to fix.
I have a 8g galant vr4 so it’s the 2.5 v6 and it’s the exact same until it’s warm..especially if you haven’t driven it in a couple days…sometimes I have to unplug the MAF just to get around 😂.

As someone who daily drove a VR-4 for a handful of years, I would advise against it. It's an OLD grand touring car with parts that are becoming more and more difficult to find, expensive, and most mechanics don't even know how to work on them. I owned mine back when you'd still see them on the road from time to time in the early to mid 2000's. I imagine it's even worse now and more expensive to own.
Im struggling with my 91 SL, non stop misfiring and ive done replaced everything besides injectors at this point and FPR

I have owned 3 3000gt vr4s. Not sure why yours have problem constantly. You need to take yours to a good 3S shop so they can fix it properly.
Did you block off your fiav? That might be why it runs poorly when cold.

@MiguelDsm i love it. Drive about 150 miles a day. Took 2 years of bring everything up to date. Replaced or rebuilt everything but the engine internals. I tour for a living in music and it definitely doesn't like it when it sits. It love to be driven. Been fighting fuel pressure issues but new altantor solved that. Mine sat for about 9 years outside in a back yard. Wish you were east coast. There's a few of us out here.
