CLIP DESCRIPTION:
During Lina's (Jean Hagen) performance, the men open the curtain to reveal the true singer - Kathy (Debbie Reynolds).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Hollywood, 1927: the silent-film romantic team of Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) and Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen) is the toast of Tinseltown. While Lockwood and Lamont personify smoldering passions onscreen, in real life the down-to-earth Lockwood can't stand the egotistical, brainless Lina. He prefers the company of aspiring actress Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds), whom he met while escaping his screaming fans. Watching these intrigues from the sidelines is Cosmo Brown (Donald O'Connor), Don's best pal and on-set pianist. Cosmo is promoted to musical director of Monumental Pictures by studio head R.F. Simpson (Millard Mitchell) when the talking-picture revolution commences. That's all right for Cosmo, but how will talkies affect the upcoming Lockwood-Lamont vehicle "The Dueling Cavalier"? Don, an accomplished song-and-dance man, should have no trouble adapting to the microphone. Lina, however, is another matter; put as charitably as possible, she has a voice that sounds like fingernails on a blackboard. The disastrous preview of the team's first talkie has the audience howling with derisive laughter. On the strength of the plot alone, concocted by the matchless writing team of Betty Comden and Adolph Green, Singin' in the Rain is a delight. But with the addition of MGM's catalog of Arthur Freed-Nacio Herb Brown songs -- "You Were Meant for Me," "You Are My Lucky Star," "The Broadway Melody," and of course the title song -- the film becomes one of the greatest Hollywood musicals ever made.

Miss LuMont may have a horrible voice, but her lip-syncing skills are on point.
I was just thinking the same thing!!
Actually in the scene where Miss lumont was trying to lip sync into he Huge Cone thing at about 1 hour and 13minutes into the movie. That was her real singing voice
Miss LuMont was a Phenominal singer
+ParadiseGamer And when Debbie Reynolds had to provide Jean Hagen's speaking voice in the movie within a movie, it's quality wasn't good enough. So they got Jean Hagen to dub herself.
yes but not in the singing parts..that was betty noyes who sang "Would You" and "You Are My Lucky Star"
Gotta be honest, Donald O'Connor killed it in every scene he was in, his body-language and expressions were spot-on every time.
Madkatz Productionz IKR?! I literally watched him in every scene he was in and goodness me his expressions are just so authentic! He really was the character.
Donald O'Connor was very underrated. He often played the sidekick in the shadow of actors like Gene Kelly and others. Personally, watching this movie growing up, I always had a little crush on Cosmo. I thought Kathy was crazy to fall for Don Lockwood (although he was handsome, too.) Donald O'Connor could sing, act, and dance as well as any other actor AND he was absolutely adorable. I mean, those blue eyes alone! (Swoon!)
A bit underrated mister donald o'connor
he was ok
Loved it when Cosmo took over singing the song! XD
She has her dinossaurs and vampires and so many other things. Why she steals if she is so superior. Hands off my things. Período. MR XD
Does anyone else wish they had a friend like Cosmo
I know lel
cosmo was he related to danny kaye just thought he looked like him a bit😃
@@elenav.5470 I definitely do
Cosmo had to take over the mic to prove that Cathy was the real one singing

*Tells the band to play in A flat.*
*The band then plays the song in E flat.*
What's a Fifth among friends
HAHA IKR
They probably only made her say that so she would stretch the a and the flat with her ugly voice
In the stage script, Lina hears Kathy say A Flat but she takes the A literally.
Brilliant movie haven’t watched it in a while but I love it
She is now singing in heaven :(
Umbi
best comment on here.
Umbi that wasn’t her voice. She’s was not that great of a singer. She was lip syncing. Ironic really. The blonde girl is pretending to sing what she was pretending to sing.
And how do you know this? Oh you don’t.
@@johns3937 so debbie reynold is also lip syncing? 😯
@@titotobing4427 yup and the best part of the story is Jean Hagen aka Lina who is "lip singing" in the move is one of 2 actresses who is actually singing in the movie Debbies parts. So Lina is singing Kathys parts who is singing Linas parts.
Isn't it kind of weird that Lina is oblivious to people laughing so loudly at her until Cosmo starts to sing?
Clearly she's dumb or somethin'
Comically narcissistic.
She thought they loved it so much they were laughing
Rachel S it’s called being conceited
Uh uh
Rest in Peace, Debbie Reynolds.
2016 has no chill.
we just hope 2016 wont take more people
Shameem Akhter shut the fuck up, there's no god and you're fictitious apocalypse will never happen you moron!
But unhappily it did. Farewell, Father Mulcahy.
Ive also seen her in Halloweentown and her voice roles in Charolette's Web, Kim Possible and Rugrats
how do you feel about 2016 now lol? from 2020
I love how until Don started yelling, Cosmo was just still singing
That was his moment
Cosmo queria um pouco de sucesso pra ele também, afinal, quem não quer? No começo eu pensava que Cosmo se revelaria um grande invejoso de Don, seu amigo, que por mais que tenham começado juntos, um se destacou mais que o outro.
I know it was fake but I have to point out that Lina had a beautiful stage presence. She really put emotion and pazazz into her “singing”. Can we just give her a hand for her acting skills, please?🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Jean Hagen was a genuinely talented actress and singer - her comedic abilities takes the movie to another level
@@johneyon5257 Yes she was a great singer and actor and funnily enough, she dubbed Debbie's singing voice in one of the songs!
@@ellingtonlover7319 - yeah - that was disorienting when i first heard about that - "wait! - Debbie's lipsyncing to Jean - while Jean's character lipsyncs to Debbie's character?!"
@@johneyon5257 Got it wrong, Debbie's SPEAKING voice was dubbed by Hagen in some scenes but some of Debbie's singing was dubbed also. Here is the quote from Wikipedia
'Reynolds' singing in two songs was dubbed by Betty Noyes, one of them when Kathy is shown dubbing Lina Lamont, while her high notes and taps were dubbed in the entire film. The spoken dialog in the same scene was actually uttered by Hagen.'
@@ellingtonlover7319 - okay - now i'm even more confused - but thanks anyway

Kidding aside, I don't know. Probably cancer.
1:28 love that all three of them just unitedly went “let’s end this woman’s career.”
That synch in the rope pulling and singing, what a trio
Fun fact, All of Cathy's singing is actually Lina’s actress dubbing her. So this scene is Lina being dubbed by Cathy, being played by Debbie, being dubbed by Lina's actress, whose name I’ve forgotten. Rainception.
Um, no. Some of the songs of Debbie was dubbed, but not this song/scene and definitely not by actress who played Lina (Jean Hagen)
@@myheartssay "In the looping sequence, Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds) is seen dubbing the dialogue for Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen) because Lina's voice is shrill and screechy. However, it's not Reynolds who is speaking, it's Jean Hagen herself, who actually had a beautiful deep, rich voice. So you have Jean Hagen dubbing Debbie Reynolds dubbing Jean Hagen. And when Debbie is supposedly dubbing Jean's singing of "Would You?" the voice you hear singing actually belongs to Betty Noyes, who had a much richer singing voice than Debbie." You're right. I must have remembered incorrectly.

Singing in the rain was my first movie ever. And Star Wars played religiously in my house
I did not see Singing in the Rain until six years ago. I saw it and Star Wars ten years apart. It is sad indeed Debbie and Carrie are gone
I liked Gene and Debbie's performance but Donald's comedic and dance talent featured is what sold me to buy this movie and be a big fan of his..so underrated to me...
I totally agree
Thank you for the memories Debbie , R.I.P
I just loved her movies. RIP you and Carrie will be missed.
My favorite Debbie movie was Halloweentown
I wanna see this movie now! IN GLORIOUS TECHNICOLOR!!!

Props for the American Horror Story: Freakshow reference!
I saw it on the big screen. At the Stanfurd Theater in Palo Alto. Well worth it! And the ballet that ends "An American In Paris" simply must be seen in a theater to appreciate it fully.
Hopefully I will get a chance for it's 70th anniversary in 2022
1:24 The guys singing and taking action is the funniest of the movie...
Cathy's reaction when the curtains pulled was priceless....

I can't stop laughing at Don Lockwood's face when they do Lina's arm motion. Hahaha
Jean Hagen deserved her Oscar nomination
and perhaps should have won an Academy Award in the category of Best Supporting Actress In
A Motion Picture.
I've always felt some pity for Lina, and God bless Jean Hagen. RIP, my Dear.
Such a wonderful and cute movie. Keepin' this movie to watch over and over. Debbie...kick your heels up with Gene and Donald again. *LOVE* and holding onto these memories.
After Gene screamed at her during rehearsals, bringing her to tears, I think Debbie would rather kick up her heels with Donald and *not* Gene.
The best days of the Hollywood Golden Era! RIP Debbie Reynolds and thanks for the all the wonderful entertainment.
Even though my first real glimpse of that era was from Wizard of Oz, i had the big soft spot for it since watching the King & I
This movie is awesome despite the years. And how in the end the three of them pull the ropes so the truth can be revealed. It brings joy to me watching that.
Surely a gem to never forget.
I always had such a crush on Cosmo/Donald O'Connor when I was a teeny tiny tot, its hard not to really, he's very cute and the ultimate funny man - Even my Mum and Grandma had crushes on him
It was at this moment that I realized that I do as well

Jean Hagen is fabulous! Love her!
Having been prompted by Debbie Reynolds that she would like to sing it in the key of A flat ( as if the orchestra had versions in all twelve keys anyway!), they then strike up the intro in E flat.
+Paul Barrett thank you for this! I was trying to find this sheet music for this particular key, but could tell it was not A flat haha!
This is primarily for the joke of Lena's accent being too heavy for the band players to understand, hearing A flat as E flat.
Until I came here and read the comments I thought she HAD said "E flat" this whole time
The conductor clearly said "A flat", so Lena's accent couldn't be blamed.
I'm happy that I'm not the only person who noticed that the orchestra played this song in E flat.
@@elwoodblues9613 Yeah, but the orchestra was Scottish, so they thought the conductor meant "E flat".
"A flaaaat" LMAO
The dress with the swan feathers was made for Debbie, the original one beHInd the scenes.
Paula Amaral her voice was flat
Lip-sinking ....This movie was so ahead of its time it’s freaky.
This was common lots of actresses who couldn't sing
Actually this movie was perfect for its time, this was really common practice when movies first got sound as well (for example even Dorothy's Over the Rainbow is lip-synced in the Wizard of Oz)
Alexandra Evans really?!
Aliyah Johnson Well, it’s still Garland’s voice, but they used a pre-recorded track and she sang in time with it.
Lip sinking...?
Did Lina really think she wasn’t going to caught lip-syncing, sooner or later? LOL.
Great classic movie.🎥👍
R.I.P. Debbie Reynolds😭❤
My great grandma loves this part. She's 99
One of the great comedic performances in movie history - Jean Hagen was nominated for an Academy Award

Hi john k dfhf
Q
Please don’t use the Lord’s name in vain
It’s interesting that Jean Hagen actually had a beautiful deep voice. The voice in the film is just a character voice she perfected.
You can even hear Jean Hagen's real voice in the scene where Kathy dub's Lina's spoken dialogue. "Nothing can keep us apart. Our love will last until the stars turn cold."
Yes, see Jean Hagen in the films "Side Street" and "Asphalt Jungle". Jean could talk without that "screech"...great character voice, Jean Hagen.
wow love Debbie's voice but I'm falling in love with Jean's cute gesture and expression.
So my school did the musical and I saw it not even an hour ago. I loved it.

Jean Hagen did a BRILLIANT job in this movie, perfectly imitating Judy Holliday's voice from the film Born Yesterday.
The theater this scene takes place in is TCL Chinese Theater, formerly known as Guanman's Chinese Theater.
Grauman's
Paul Barrett o
According the 50th anniversary documentary, it was actually filmed on the MGM studio set that replicated the Chinese theater- they even had pictures of the camera set up and walls being moved in and out of place.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sid_Grauman The Wikipedia article on Sid Grauman who was also responsible for The Million Dollar Theater on Broadway in Downtown Los Angeles (because the man actually spent the unheard of a million bucks to build the movie palace), and also the The Egyptian Theater, about seven blocks east of the Chinese Theater on Hollywood Boulevard.
Yes of course it’s a set not a real theatre 🎭
merveilleuse scène...où la vraie STAR grimpe au firmament du talent et du cinéma !!!
Merci de ce merveilleux cadeau
I wish i could clear my memory and watch this movie again...
R.i.P to both of them!
In the '80s, I had an Environmental Activist English teacher with whom I, and a few others, didn't see eye-to-eye. We were given failing grades as a "Thank You" (retaliation) for our non-compliance to his political leanings. We ended up in Summer School, where we all excelled. The Summer School Teacher was strict, though not aggressive, and certainly not political. On our last day, as a reward and celebration, she brought this movie in for us to watch, and everyone loved it. Little did the Activist know, but he strengthened our student-to-student relationships. He was later "released" from his teaching position for harassing students. Ahh, but we learned and had fun in that Summer School class, and every time I see this movie I smile.
I watched this movie first time when I was young. And I still love this movie, especially this scene.
RIP Debbie Reynolds and thanks for the memories.

Hello 👋how are you doing?
LMAO! I love it when the three of them proceed to open the curtains while singing and dancing :D
One has to feel a LITTLE sorry for Lena. She was cursed with a bad speaking voice AND singing voice and had to be dubbed by some little upstart.
Nah, I'd feel sorry for her if her character showed the SLIGHTEST bit of self awareness or decency. But she was mean, vindictive, arrogant, and was quite content to deprive another up and coming young actresses of her career, forcing her to be the on screen voice of Lina Lamont for as long as Lina wanted (or her contract's terms were up at least). As it was, she got what was coming to her, and had richly earned it.
Lina might have been able to win over her producers and fellow actors and actresses through manipulation and sueing threats. But the moment that curtain opened, she was beat by the one thing she could never get around.
The audience. 🤣
Wow. You’re right
