      @@marmarclassic3636 Kelly was a perfectionist, he worked tirelessly on every thing he did and wanted his teammates to do the same. Don't forget he was not just an actor on this, but the choreographer and co-director as well. We can not begin to imagine the pressure he must have been under. Donald O'Connor admired Kelly and was very eager to learn whatever Gene had to offer. Kelly was a team player, he had no problem aknowledging other people's talent, he perfectly knew what he could do and what others did better and he had no shame admitting it.
      Yes, he was demanding indeed. He was tough to work with because he wouldn't call it a day unless he was absolutely sure the people he supervised gave everything they had to give. Both O'Connor and Reynolds were thankful for this and what they learned with Gene, about his craft, and about themselves.

      ***** Well... true but not completely accurate. This is not filmed in one take... there are many cuts and the audio we hear is not the audio from the video recording but dubbed. Just because digital editing was not available, that does not mean that "video editing" was not available and not done. Film can be cut, spliced, etc etc. Some of the earliest video footage available is of people doing illusions of appearing and disappearing etc... They didn't have a means of electronically manipulating the images, but that doesn't mean people really vanished. ;-)
      That aside... yes absolutely two great and talented people doing amazing things truly in sync visually.

      Gavin Morris Donald and Debbie were the ones who really had to work at it. Donald had some, but not a lot of dance training prior to this movie. Debbie had literally none. Gene on the other hand... yes, he had to practice and work at it, but he had something inside of him that just made him amazing on the dance floor and dancing in general. The way he moves is so smooth and fluid and he has such a swagger about himself, a confidence. Just watch in this video. Donald knows what he's doing but every now and again he looks down at his feet to make sure he's doing it right and he always seems to be thinking about the next step. Just watch this once and watch only Donald. Then watch it again and watch only Gene. You'll notice he gets to a point in almost any fast dance he's doing where he throws his head back and has this little smirk on his face, that's when he does his best work. He doesn't think about the next step, it's just sort of natural to him.

      Hunter Mirr Donald was a tremendous dancer BEFORE this movie...see his Universal movies and his fabulous numbers....Kelly insisted on him for the role...he wanted a terrific dancer...only someone of Donald's ability could have done this number with Kelly...iin this number, Kelly said he wanted to incorporate things that Donald was so known for...Donald had tremendous athleticism. .Donald is considered one of the best dancers EVER! And, he was a terrific comedian, wonderful singer, serious actor...musician, etc... one of THE greatest and beloved talents. Make em laugh was choreographed by him - brilliant, as Kelly said. See his fabulous romantic dances with Vera Ellen in Call Me Madam and his ones with Mitzi Gaynor in Anything Goes (Bing Crosby, too...Donald made ehis first movie with Bing at age 12...he was a performer all his life...starting as a child in vaudeville, with his family...he was a teen idol in the 40's...really wonderful movies with great dancing.)..and, so many other movies of his. Debbie Reynolds was the one who had the difficult time, as she was not a dancer...she said it was daunting dancing with Donald and Kelly who were both amazing dancers.

      Broadway performers can sing, act and dance but their names won't draw a crowd. So they get A list celebrities and auto tune them to make ticket sales.

    • @KuueenKumi
      @KuueenKumi 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Because they fell out of favor around the 1960s with the general audience, so they didnt need actors who could also sing and dance anymore, thereby leading to it being almost impossible to make a big name musical if they wanted to since they werent scouting this kind of talent anymore.
      I hate the general audience that let the movie musical fall by the wayside.

    I can't get this song out of my head; I sing it around the house all day long. I simply cannot watch this scene enough; twice a day is a minimum. This is, hands down, my favorite (duo-dance) movie scene of all time. (Of course my favorite solo dance number is the title number from this movie.) Gene was the penultimate dancer; he could do it all. But his particular style is just so appealing! He was a master and perfectionist for sure, but all the while maintaining that boyish charm and love of life. It's just impossible, at least for me, to watch him dance without having a smile.on my face. Love, love, love Gene Kelly!! Donald O'Connor was the perfect co-star for this movie. He's cute, funny and quite a gifted dancer in his own right.

    • @agenttheater5
      @agenttheater5 6 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      They do hold long shots in dance scenes and enough full body shots to see what the dancers are doing....but it's never longer than 10 seconds in the group performances and then the camera instantly goes to the next person. We get only a glimpse of what they can do, but in the musicals of the 30s and 40s and 50s, when someone on their payroll could dance they let the audience know that. The duet numbers were nice, and they danced as well as I probably could (I'm under no illusions of my dancing skills) but for the most part, the choreography of La La Land was a bit simplistic (and yes, I know that the point of it was to portray ordinary, flawed, everyday people....but it's just not the same, especially when you remember the work and effort the other dancers put into their craft for years ie the behind the scenes story of 3 numbers from this movie).

    • @alel3544
      @alel3544 5 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      I totally agree. Musicals must be done by dancers or singer who can also act and not by actors who can sing or dance.
      And a great musical must also have a great choreography, so La La Land is nothing compared to Singin' in the rain and other musicals from the gold era.

      @Sasha8611 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      ***** Her stating that she feels they'll let just about anyone into Hollywood these days regardless of talent is neither here nor there in terms of what she wants to do with her own life. Your reply might have been valid had she said anything about wanting to be in the business herself, but she didn't so it isn't; hence it being a dumb reply.

    • @Sasha8611
      @Sasha8611 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      ***** First off, you assume she's average, that she couldn't be a movie star if she really wanted to be one. Fine, assume what you will. But that still doesn't change the fact that your reply was completely pointless. As I said, one thing has nothing to do with the other. Did you think that was a clever reply, to say 'if it's so easy to do it then why don't you do it'? That's the simplest, most childish response to give someone. Instead of posing a solid argument you reply with a pointless question either out of laziness or just plain ignorance. You have literally no valid argument here against her comment and the fact that you think you do and expect me to act like you do is both frustrating and amusing. It's apparent that you're just going to continue to talk me in circles with your stupidity, and I really have better ways to spend my time than trying to explain something to a person who doesn't respond to logic and reasonable comments, so I think I'm quite done here. Good luck in life, buddy.
