When I was in Vietnam, (infantry) it was called Puff The Magic Dragon. That is the time period when the flying "gunship" originated. The first aircraft used were C-47 cargo transports modified by the troops in the field to handle 2 miniguns. There was no sophisticated aiming mechanism, the pilot would tilt the aircraft and follow the stream of tracer bullets to hit the target with the gunner moving the gun fine tuning hitting the target. The miniguns fire a 7.62 mm bullet (a rifle bullet) there were no big guns like on the AC-130. The gun with the yellow safety cage is a 105MM howitzer it is a field artillery gun mounted in an airplane. They mounted a cannon in an airplane. I had the opportunity to work with and direct Puff on several gun runs in a battle where we were getting over-run. Puff flew low at the time 50 feet off the ground where the enemy could be seen as it did not have the penetrating fire-power of the AC-130.

Cost of the AC-130U is about $190 million dollars . The big Gun on the AC-130 is the 105mm howitzer canon. Then the 25mm Gatlin Gun, and the 40mm Bofors canon .It is a life saving aircraft. And it isn't overkill,
Good morning y'all. I hope you're well. The AC 130 is the airframe itself. I grew up in Jacksonville Arkansas and that is where the Little Rock Air Force Base is located. It is a C-130 base. I'm not sure what variant they have out there now but they are transportation and delivery. This video obviously shows some gunship variant of it. C-130 can take off from pretty much anywhere dirt runways. Short runways. They fly almost constantly practicing in groups of three. Pretty much 24 hours a day no matter what the weather conditions.
As an old Army BRAT I grew up in the old C-130 Spooky gunship years (vietnam and cold war years). Dad was a platoon Sgt and they use to call it Puff the Magic Dragon. I've only seen it once doing training, let me change that, I didn't see the aircraft, just the tracers raining down out of the sky because it was night training. It was impressive as hell. I LOVED my childhood. C-130 gunships cost about $190 million plus each. Cheap by modern aircraft standards
I worked with a World War 2 vet who served on B-25 bombers in the Pacific . The B-25 was a medium twin engine bomber .They got the idea of mounting a 75 mm cannon in the nose of the plane because it was more accurate in attacking enemy ships than bombing was ( except for dive bombers ) . You should watch some of the actual combat videos of the AC-130 attacking enemy forces in Iraq and Afghanistan
They were c-130 back in my day mainly transport planes we used them as paratroopers. Unreal how big they were I've seen several trucks jeeps an trailers in them.
I was in the US Air Force for 24 years, the last 11 years here in Florida at Hurlburt Field where the AC-130's are located. I was a communication and navigation systems technician so would work on the aircraft frequently. Of course they had no munitions on them on the ground (generally), but just the weapons themselves was pretty impressive. The practice range for the gunships is pretty near so in this area along the Gulf Coast of Florida you can hear them firing off in the distance. Sometimes you can even feel your house shake a little. They're a very impressive weapon system (aircraft).
Mission of the AC-130 is ground support. The newest variant only has 3 types of guns on it. A 25mm gatlin autocannnon, a 40mm bofors cannon, and a 105mm howitzer. Previous versions had 2-3 20mm gatlin autocannons, 2 40mm bofors cannons, and the 105mm howitzer. Early versions on different aircraft had just the gatlin autocannons. The fewer guns on the newest variant indicates the ability to put the rounds on target more accurately. It isn't designed to take out Thanos but to kill the enemy in large numbers or in prepared positions. Only the most hardened prepared positions would be safe from this thing and even then, they better pray. And it is not overkill. If it doesn't actually hit the enemy, it'll make them take cover for sure. That is known as suppressive fire. The enemy is more concerned for their safety than in shooting at our guys, type of thing. The shots of the AC-130 shooting from both sides are not rockets or bombs. Those are flares designed to fool anti-aircraft missiles that could target them with heat seeking capabilities. The flares are hotter than the engines. So, the idea is that the heat-seeking missile would go after the flares and not the engines.
AC-130s were so feared in both Iraq and Afghanistan, that even if one wasn't available, they would still make a radio call like one on the way of just send in a regular C-130. The enemy would immediately break contact and run for cover. And to understand the mission, with is mainly CAS watch some videos from actual support missions over Afghanistan. You'll see what a great asset it is. Originally, they were developed to hunt supply trucks on the Ho Chi Minh Trail during the Vietnam war.
My Uncle is a Marine, he's a pilot flying a Regular C-130 Cargo plane when I was around 13 years old I was able to look around and sit in the cockpit. For such a large plane the cockpit is Tiny and Very cramped. Then again I'm 6'6 was probably 6'2.... Many, Many moons ago.
The green rounds are tracer rounds that comes out every 3 or 4 real bullets. It's used to see where ur shooting at night. Don't take out fats, ur girl is gorgeous
Imagine that it's Fats' birthday and she's at home waiting for her husband to come home from his job with cake and flowers. Instead, he's at the pub down the street tossin' back Guinness with his mates. An angry Fats calls up to her friendly American C-130 pilot friend and explains the situation. Fats points her laser at the pub and calls her husband to inform him of his fate saying, "So long wanker!" The gunship lights up the pub like a Christmas tree. Fats starts laughing like a maniac. 😂
The large shells are 105 mm canon shells, the next size down was a 40 mm bofors gun, the fast shooter is of course a 20 mm gatling gun....could be upgraded to 30 mm. the offensive weapons always shoot to the left... the 105's weigh 36 lb 10 oz - 43 lb 3 oz (16.6-19.6 kg)
The yellow frame is to protect you from the recoil of the gun. What's cool is certain pictures of the AC-130 directly from the front when it's deploying the Chafe, the smoke looks like angel wings, hence the name, "Angel of death."
I love your guys videos I’m a guy and love watching military videos most women I know don’t like this kind of stuff shout out to you girl PS when you come to America check out Colorado so many beautiful places
The ac 130 Is usually called upon for ground support missions in special operations behind enemy lines example of this is John Chapmans mission to save the seals on that summit the ac 130 is a nighttime aircraft
Keep in mind a lot of these weapon systems were developed during the Cold War, when they would very likely be responding to a Soviet or Proxy State push through the Fulda Gap into the West with enormous resouces. The AC-130 Spectre would have been part of the tool-kit to make the Fulda Gap look like the gates of Hell itself, if Hell was a woodchipper. Not being required for that particular mission it gets tasked for large-scale ground support activities in areas where air supremacy allows for it. Being able to 'shoot down' at someone with a 105-mm Howitzer is an unfair advantage and if you are fighting "fair" in a war you are fighting wrong. The military moral imperative is to end the conflict swiftly as that reduces human suffering.
It’s also used for close air support like the A10 but it’s known to be used at night more than daytime operations because of how easily it can be shot down if I’m not mistaken. I also believe that the government is testing laser guided missiles launching from ac-130’s to extend its service life
Close air support when basically you have an entrenched enemy and the air space is not hostile. The flares air to shake off hand launched surface to air missiles that lock onto a heat signature.
This is loitering close air support (L-CAS). The AC-130 has the advantage of being a prop plane with big gas tanks. She can loiter over an Op for hours. Longer than an A-10 can. The A-10 attacks in strafing run while the AC-130 flies in circles. Its slower speed also allows it more precision and can engage targets closer to friendlies.
The latest version, the AC-130J Ghostrider, has gotten rid of the 40mm Bofors, and, 25mm GAU-12, in favor of a 30mm chain gun, and, the 105mm howitzer. It can also deploy GBU-39 & GBU-69 small diameter bombs, and, AGM-114 & AGM-176 missiles. It's primary mission is close air support for ground units. Also, it is not a "jet", it's turbo-prop powered.
It's a close air support aircraft, just like the A-10. But instead we shoved an artillery piece on the side of it. The 105mm is good at taking out buildings and other structures that people may be hiding in. Also, over kill is underrated. Never use a small caliber round for a large caliber man.
8:12 Those anti-air flares, its not a weapon. The flares pose no danger to anyone on the ground. They're meant to confuse heat seeking missiles and I guess for making cool pictures
Their mission is close air support. Those on the ground call in their support. They destroy what our guys are fighting. The Spectre is ground forces best ally.
The flares are defense against IR-guided surface-to-air missiles. IR = infrared. This type of missile locks on the heat of the airplanes engines. When you fire the flares those missiles track the heat from the flares instead of your aircraft.
The A-10's gun is actually larger and fires 30mm rounds the one on the AC-130 is 25mm the first gun they used was a 40mm cannon then you see them using the 105mm cannon and its main role is the same as the A-10 CAS or close air support for soldiers on the ground the 3 aircraft no enemy soldier wants to see turning inbound on them are the A-10, AC-130 and the AH-64 Apache all 3 are the stuff nightmares come from you can't run and you can't hide its game over
Lemme explain America. Doesn't matter if you're talking about cars, guns, or planes. We will build it because we can. When we needed a gunship we built the most powerful gunship ever devised by man. Some might call this overkill, but in reality it provides the necessary fire support for a multitude of missions. It's ready to go when the orders are received, and it has saved the lives of American and allied forces across the globe.
OF COURSE it is overkill, we are Americans, overkilling is what we do best, they are called "GHOSTRIDER" the weapons are all mounted on the left side of the plane, the plane was once a regular C-130, but the ones that were modified into the AC-130, had a 105mm modified ground artillery cannon installed in the rear, and either 1 or 2 40mm Bofers anti aircraft guns mounted in front of the 105, and in the front either a single 25mm Gatlin gun, or two 20mm Gatlin guns, the reason they chose the C-130 as the platform for this mission is because it is first and foremost a CARGO plane, which means that it can be loaded with the 1,000,000 rounds of the various ammo for a mission, by far the most would be the 20mm or 25mm for the Gatlin guns because they use so much of it so quickly, probably just a few thousand rounds for the 40mm, and likely just a hundred or so of the 105mm cannon, then they are all mounted to special mounts and the weapons operators who control the firing sit behind computer screens and control the remotely through very accurate sensors, now typically it is used for lengthy close air support missions, but in reality, they can be used anytime that we want something to just cease to exist, this plane has whatever weapons onboard to erase people, animals, vehicles, buildings, or whatever else is needed to be vanished. when they enter what is called a "PYLON" turn, they are orbiting their target where ALL of the weapons can be brought to bear on that target, and it is said that the AC-130 can reduce the total population of a 5 acre piece of land to ZERO in less than a minute. OK the older C-130H's cost about $30,000,000 adding the weapons, Ammo storage, targeting and sensors to make it into an AC-130 costs about $50,000,000 more, the NEW C-130J costs about $70,000,000 with another $50,000,000 to make it into the AC-130J so not they do not cost anywhere close to a billion dollars, but they are expensive enough that we do not have very many of the AC versions of the plane, probably less than 50 in total would be my guess, but their value can never be appreciated until they make their presence known over the battlefield.
Like manty01actual59 said, every green streak you see are tracers flying out every 3rd bullet. Looks like Stars Wars. My dad was the Vietnam war and had to leave a position yet they could not carry the ammo and tracers back so they had to just shoot thousands of rounds so it would not fall into enemy hands. He said shooting all the tracers was most fun he had behind enemy lines. Although I thought he said they were red. This is from Google, "US tracer fire was red at night and orange in daylight". Anyone from that era that can verify?
"Over kill"? We are America. We took a steel well casing, like the kind used by oil drillers and machined it to become a bunker buster bomb. The A-10 is an airplane built around a gun. The F-22 entered service in 2005 and is still king of the sky. Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird is still the world's fastest jet aircraft and its first service flight was December 22, 1964. What you call "over kill" we call yesterdays tech. 😂
Overkill is not in our vocabulary, raining fire 🇺🇸
No such thing as overkill
The AC-130 Gunship is primarily for ground support. Frequently supporting special operations but also infantry
It also only works in friendly skies, we won't be using it anywhere near actual wars, they are just for covert operations.
It’s used for “Overwatch” for units ground. The soldier on the ground with the laser is “painting” the target, the plane then goes into a counterclockwise turn and then rain down the fire and brimstone!
When you are the soldier on the ground, engaged in a firefight with the enemy, overkill is probably what you're hoping fore. I'm just saying. 😎
Keep in mind when you see the green tracers flying out of Spectre, that’s every 3rd bullet
is it? in the Marines we did every 4th so we could walk our fire into the target.

$337,916,610.17 per aircraft adjusted for inflation.
So we all paid one dollar for this. Good investment.
WHAT AN AWESOME VIDEO!!! Ground footage , night vision , onboard
The AC-130 is awesome💯🔥
Thank you 🙏 for sharing 🛫 ✈️☝️I heard it was very loud ,and dependable. I have not seen the new one ☝️ yet 👏👏👏👏☮️
Sometimes called Puff the Magic Dragan!!!
AC-130 J is a close air support platform for ground support. Usually supporting JSOC (special operations) and infantry.
Guys your reactions are great.
Special forces best friend in the sky. Unless the sky is clear you won't see them

In America, we don't make sense, we make dollars🗣 Triple the defense budget🦅🦅
And inches are better than centimeters.
I only watch this, because she's gorgeous 😍 💖 💕
I was in the US Air Force for 24 years, the last 11 years here in Florida at Hurlburt Field where the AC-130's are located. I was a communication and navigation systems technician so would work on the aircraft frequently. Of course they had no munitions on them on the ground (generally), but just the weapons themselves was pretty impressive. The practice range for the gunships is pretty near so in this area along the Gulf Coast of Florida you can hear them firing off in the distance. Sometimes you can even feel your house shake a little. They're a very impressive weapon system (aircraft).
No such thing as overkill. It is used for CAS (close air support) missions where lots of firepower is needed.
And you guys save alot of lives. Retired Army Infantry and thank you USAF.
Best crowd control we have.
AC-130 saved my life ❤
Basically used for night time only ground troop support. Literally the warfighter's best friend during night missions.
2 of these or either 2 C-17's fly directly over my house at least once per week on training missions. It's usually around dusk.
The green rounds are tracer rounds that comes out every 3 or 4 real bullets. It's used to see where ur shooting at night. Don't take out fats, ur girl is gorgeous
The big unit is the Bofors Cannon.
They're used on ships as well as the AC130.
Yass & Fats Awesome Video Today!!🔥🐐🐐💎
Everyone is for team fats, let's go beautiful
It plays no games🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
It’s also used for close air support like the A10 but it’s known to be used at night more than daytime operations because of how easily it can be shot down if I’m not mistaken. I also believe that the government is testing laser guided missiles launching from ac-130’s to extend its service life
Close air support when basically you have an entrenched enemy and the air space is not hostile. The flares air to shake off hand launched surface to air missiles that lock onto a heat signature.
Definitely dont want to be on the receiving end when that thing opens up!!!
Those are heat seeker flares ,heat seeking missile countermeasures
This is loitering close air support (L-CAS). The AC-130 has the advantage of being a prop plane with big gas tanks. She can loiter over an Op for hours. Longer than an A-10 can. The A-10 attacks in strafing run while the AC-130 flies in circles. Its slower speed also allows it more precision and can engage targets closer to friendlies.
Used on everything from buildings to convoys to soldiers. Basically anywhere its needed.
The Air Force is also currently testing the employment of high-energy lasers from the AC-130J.
It's a close air support aircraft, just like the A-10. But instead we shoved an artillery piece on the side of it. The 105mm is good at taking out buildings and other structures that people may be hiding in.
Also, over kill is underrated. Never use a small caliber round for a large caliber man.
-It is used for overwatch missions. Ground support. They only fly night missions...
-$130 to $190 Million a Piece...
Those sparks you saw coming out both sides were flares for anti missile protection
8:12 Those anti-air flares, its not a weapon. The flares pose no danger to anyone on the ground. They're meant to confuse heat seeking missiles and I guess for making cool pictures
I don't think a laser would be effective against Fats' deep dark eyes. 😵💫🖤
I don't own any guns but have fired many in my life. I love the mechanics of gun and am a firm 2nd amendment supporter.
It has many missions. It can support troops, take out convoys, take out tanks.
Their mission is close air support. Those on the ground call in their support. They destroy what our guys are fighting. The Spectre is ground forces best ally.
The AC-130 is used like the A-10 Warthog, for close ground support.
The flares are defense against IR-guided surface-to-air missiles. IR = infrared. This type of missile locks on the heat of the airplanes engines. When you fire the flares those missiles track the heat from the flares instead of your aircraft.
When you bring a gin to a fight, make sure you have the biggest and best.
Y’all better start reacting to Boston vlogs and videos.
The A-10's gun is actually larger and fires 30mm rounds the one on the AC-130 is 25mm the first gun they used was a 40mm cannon then you see them using the 105mm cannon and its main role is the same as the A-10 CAS or close air support for soldiers on the ground the 3 aircraft no enemy soldier wants to see turning inbound on them are the A-10, AC-130 and the AH-64 Apache all 3 are the stuff nightmares come from you can't run and you can't hide its game over
Still like the 102 howitzer on AC 130. They removed the 40 mm borfor cannon. No one makes ammo
Ground support
This is what the military brought in in the first Transformers movie to take out the transformers.
3:18 I bet that red metal is a machine shop add on not standard if bought from the factory.
Let's go fast, your the only one
Close air support 😮
Lemme explain America. Doesn't matter if you're talking about cars, guns, or planes. We will build it because we can. When we needed a gunship we built the most powerful gunship ever devised by man. Some might call this overkill, but in reality it provides the necessary fire support for a multitude of missions. It's ready to go when the orders are received, and it has saved the lives of American and allied forces across the globe.
U.S. "Unofficial" General Engagement Policy. Overkill is just the beginning.
They have 3 types of weapons on it. The largest being a howitzer 105 mm round.
The AC-130 specter gunship is meant to cover ground troops so she is right. After establishing superiority bc and enemy jet
😂😂 I used to jump out of the C-130.
Puff the magic dragon.
Some call it puff the mighty dragon
Compared to the other aircraft’s it is relatively inexpensive.
To put it in cooking terms.....it prep the meat like cutting off extra fat or anything you don't like to cook lol
2:09 It's a prop plane. The reason for propellers is loitering.
They're used a lot in ground support...so yeah she's right.
Was designed to stop or at least slow a feared Soviet invasion of West Germany as the Warsaw Pact had many more tanks than Nato had.
That plane with armament will cost you a cool.... 200 Million.
The missions are called, in the words of Elon Musk, "GFY missions".
I heard that each of those machine gun shells (the bigger ones) cost one thousand dollars.
AC130 GHOSTRIDER is a ground support unit. 💀
Overkill? Yea..... Why? overkill!
At 8:18 that isn't bombs or rockets that's flares used as a countermeasure.
