The reason why Donkey Kong Jr was the character over DK was because the developers found it hard to make DK's sprite easily readable and understandable from behind. Jr's shirt gave him more definition and made him easy to see.

I derided her for that insolent response, of course. Who the hell does she think she is tossing around a character whose 1st appearance was in MK7? Which, incidentally, is the only MK game I've never played. She even had the freaking audacity to challenge me to a race in MK7. Challenge ME, the Old School Radical Gamer Dude! Are you serious? Is SHE serious? I did the only logical thing and accepted the challenge. (This is actually a real conversation that happened earlier tonight at work)

The original Super Mario Kart is one of my favorites of the series. Three words: No blue shells. Granted, I grew up with it, so I'm used to the old mechanics, but still. It's like the anti-Wii.

I grew up with the original Mario Kart, and I still love it above all other Mario Kart games, simply because of how great the drifting is. None of this "gotta wait a second for the drift to ramp up" crap, you just hold R and turn, and you're on maximum drift. You can also use it to jump around banana peels. Just jump and turn but don't drift, then jump and turn in the opposite direction and you're back on track.
So satisfying.

JeremySheer Please take off the nostalgia glasses. Super Mario Kart is great because it spawned an amazing series, but it really is a product of its time. It was held back by hardware limitations and outdated video game design and has since been usurped by 8 much better versions of itself. What I like the most about Super Mario Kart is its music. It's really catchy and the tunes are classics and I feel like you could have said something about it. Still really great video as always.
