Lance Picioane was one that I remember also from Adelaide,I know he did well at the Dandenong Stingrays prior to being drafted but he struggled at Adelaide before being traded to Hawthorn in the end.
I think Nathan was wanting to avoid the public attention, thus is the reason why after the 2007 premiership he decided to avoid the AFL attention so he played in VFL or the Queensland AFL league. There was also a few other players who wasted their potential, Ronnie Burns for Geelong in the 90s and Adelaide in early 2000s, he left the game in only just around 8 years into his career around 2003.
Ronnie burns started his AFL when he was 22/23 that's why only 8 seasons He played till he was 31 so I don't think he would qualify for this list Someone like Lee Walker from wce and Collingwood is a guy who could have been on this list or even a Tony free who only played one game for Richmond but was meant to be all that and a bag of chips
Also Ronnie had too good of a career to be considered a wasted potential Over 30 goals in his first six years playing AFL as a small forward, nothing wasted about that

An accurate description of Cupido. I'm surprised to see footage of him laying a tackle (never seen him do that in real life) and kicking with his right foot. I was slightly wrong as he played 53 AFL games.
Jakovich. It does seem like its being pronounced correctly. But then.. his brother Glenn was around along time..and I remember the commentators pronounced it jack-o-vich ... I dunno
Jackovich is the Aussie way of pronouncing it. The European way is Yackovich. Agreed, sounded strange hearing it pronounced that way, especially for someone who watch his brother Glen play over 200 times for West Coast.
Great video. I’d put Nathan Freeman and Matt Scharenberg in this category as well. Also as a St Kilda supporter Jack Billings for me should be on this list, still hasn’t proved his worth. I will never get over St Kilda drafting Billings ahead of Marcus Bontempelli 😢
According to the information that is starting to come out about TT, he is becoming increasingly likely to waste his talent. I had high hopes for him this year under Clarko and his staff. I'm now starting to wonder whether he'll even play.
That’s very disappointing, Peter. I, too, had hoped he’d flourish under Clarko. I really hope you’re wrong; it’ll be such a waste of exceptional talent
should make a video on the best players to come from nowhere like late draft picks rookie draft ect Port Adelaides Robbie Gray has to be 1 of the best 5th or 6th round pick same as westhoff and look at Tom jonas dan houston all were rookie listed 💪🍐 carn pear
I reckon the concept of wasted talent is a funny one. Here it's presented like "they could've been great if only they were a bit different" which isn't that far from "they could've been better if only they were better". Which is fine and all. Footy, like life, is multi-faceted though and you could say personal quirks or mental skills are part of it. As a different take - you could argue John Coleman had so much more talent to give were his career not cut short. That story is well known but my take here is that the waste comes from blindingly obvious talent that didn't translate into a concrete achievement (like premierships, awards, records), for reasons largely outside the player. These are the people we know had it, top echelon stuff... but who left some greatness on the table. For Coleman, it was largely his era that was the problem. Could've been rehabbed very quickly today. Nic Nat's an intersting one too, I think he would have had 6 or so All-Aus jackets by now (and a premiership), instead of 3, but for bad timing. Honestly, look up his season by season history - clearly the most "talented" ruckman of the past decade but he's juuuust short on enough games most seasons in his prime to be eligible for AA consideration, which to me is a waste. A month or so's difference with a couple of unlucky injuries would have had him up to at least 5 for sure, which would have been a phenomenal achievement. You could make a case for Robert Harvey having his talent wasted too - most games played without a premiership. Peter Hudson too, you could say, while not wasting his talent reeeeally, could have been sitting up the top of the goal-kicking tree and achieved much greater acclaim... if his work had all been done in the same league. Edit: Oh! And Cyril as well! He achieved a lot, sure, but was one of the best with more to give, and you can't really blame him not sticking around.
Fair call I was thinking of putting him in, but he still produced a brilliant short career with a brownlow and premiership. More of a wasted life/career than a talent I guess you could say.
@@RilesMacca wasted life? He's achieved and had more experience than the majority of people. He had an addiction. There's many that go through that. Its life. It isn't easy for everyone. He's back on track now anyway. It's pretty ignorant to say he wasted his life.
Any of the very highly paid MFC players from the 80’s and 90’s. I’d also like to nominate Matthew Hayden, from cricket. Oodles of talent but he reached a stage of his career where his position might be threatened and miraculously he would pull out a great score and then relax for another year or so.
you forgot Lawrence Angwin. Crows no. 1 draft pick & Sydney Swans $9m. Guy was a total crybaby, nutjob.. As they say, " looked like Tarzan, played like Jane.. ".
@@wilson2455 Yeah mate, it was pretty common knowledge what he'd been up to.. I thought he went to Carlton after, but ur probably right my memory isn't the best! Oh...the acrobat who was inside the Crows mascot got caught pinching players gear too...same result. I'm positive he didn't go to Sydney!!
I think that Nathan Ablett was more about having other commitments that directed his drive elsewhere, rather than a lack of drive. Additionally, he is even more religious than his brother, and the media calling him the "son of God", so that sort of media attention is already vexing to him (at about the same personal level as a racial slur).
Essendon fans and Dodoro hyped him up way too much. Hawthorn didn't bother matching Essendon's bid for him in the draft, which is usually a good indicator that a player probably isn't that good
@@RilesMacca it doesn’t matter it wasn’t pronounced that way once during his career. Nick Riewoldt didn’t like the Australian pronunciation of his name. He went ON TV AND TOLD THE WORLD TO CALL HIM RIEVOLDT. Nobody in the Jakovich family did such a thing by your logic. Every Smith that comes from Germany should be pronounced “Schmidt” He team mates called him JACKO FFS NOT YAKO !!! So take your attempted “smart arsery” somewhere else. You pronounce a name, the way that person pronounces their own name. You don’t take it upon yourself to go back to the way, it was pronounced in the old country when the person in question doesn’t use that pronunciation!! if anybody wants to look up any of these players after watching this video they are gonna see that there is no player called YAKOVITCH. So it’s in accurate regardless of how it was used in the Baltic states, 50 years ago
Yeah , I also know a few of a lighter complexion who also could have been stars if they had the drive required. Boomer was not the best Harvey to play AFL, his brother maybe had more talent but liked a beer, smoke and punt and still kicks goals for fun in suburban footy.

Yeah I guess both are correct, cause yakovich is also pronounced correctly because of it being a croatian name .
Jackovich is the Aussie way of pronouncing it. The European way is Yackovich.
Agreed, sounded strange hearing it pronounced that way, especially for someone who watch his brother Glen play over 200 times for West Coast.
remember the 2 players Illija and Brent Grgic pronounced their surnames differently ...
Andrew Lovett is worth a mention.
I wonder if Fev could be on this list.
McCadam must have had some off field issues, no way a player that good could not to some degree back that up
Great video. I’d put Nathan Freeman and Matt Scharenberg in this category as well. Also as a St Kilda supporter Jack Billings for me should be on this list, still hasn’t proved his worth. I will never get over St Kilda drafting Billings ahead of Marcus Bontempelli 😢
This North fan is hoping Tarryn Thomas and Jaidyn Stephenson do not show up on a vid like this in the future.
I would have put Jarred Polec on the list, although I guess you could argue he had some great games at Port.
Laurence Angwin, stealing from teammates to support his Coke habit.
Peter Taylor… well your mail about TT was spot on! This is such a shame. A real football tragedy.
Travis Tuck instantly came to mind, how missed?
Ashley Sampi. To a degree also Scott Cummings.
Harley Bennell was actually good which is a real shame
yeah mate he really was! he made everyone here in mandurah proud
@@zacflemo1994 he had that flare!
he played last year for our local side sw wa he was still very good
should make a video on the best players to come from nowhere like late draft picks rookie draft ect Port Adelaides Robbie Gray has to be 1 of the best 5th or 6th round pick same as westhoff and look at Tom jonas dan houston all were rookie listed 💪🍐 carn pear
Sometimes it's injuries, sometimes people don't want to be pro athletes.. it's not always behaviour
Jono O’Rourke was one I had high hopes for, but unfortunately couldn’t get going in the big league
Ben Cousins was a wasted talent
He was definitely wasted a lot. 😂
Fair call I was thinking of putting him in, but he still produced a brilliant short career with a brownlow and premiership. More of a wasted life/career than a talent I guess you could say.
@@RilesMacca I think he was making a 'wasted' joke.
@@RilesMacca fair enough by the way love the videos😃👍
@@RilesMacca wasted life? He's achieved and had more experience than the majority of people. He had an addiction. There's many that go through that. Its life. It isn't easy for everyone. He's back on track now anyway. It's pretty ignorant to say he wasted his life.
Mark "Jacko" Jackson....Biggest waste of talent of the lot
What about Cleve Hughes ?? He had such massive potential
I always wonder what bennels career would be like if he had his head screwed on right.
Shows how ice is really damaging peoples lives.
I knew Harley Bennell sounded familiar
Love from Perth my guy
Mitch Thorpe breathes a sigh of relief. Rhan Hooper also
Have no doubt there is alot you could have placed in this list, I reckon Majak Daw could be put on here
Loving the video ideas 🔥
Tarryn Thomas working on securing a feature spot in a potential sequel of this video...
6:03 Famous sport player then ends up in prison, like Ronaldinho.
Any of the very highly paid MFC players from the 80’s and 90’s.
I’d also like to nominate Matthew Hayden, from cricket. Oodles of talent but he reached a stage of his career where his position might be threatened and miraculously he would pull out a great score and then relax for another year or so.
Last photo of the video is Paul puopolo don't think he was a wasted talent
Scott Gumbleton for Essendon. Although 100% due to injuries and through no fault of his own.
I think you're a bit unfair on jackovich. It was mainly injuries that curtailed his career not drugs and booze
you forgot Lawrence Angwin. Crows no. 1 draft pick & Sydney Swans $9m. Guy was a total crybaby, nutjob.. As they say, " looked like Tarzan, played like Jane.. ".
He was a tea leaf (allegedly) got caught...& was 'dropped' by the Crows... wasn't a well liked bloke.
@@baabaabaa2293 more like " loathed by the entire Club "..
Nathan is probably 100x happier out of the AFL system, whereas a lot of there guys ended up in jail. For him, he chose rightly.
Winston Abraham, could run like the wind, kick the ball for miles......... what happened?
Knee injury ended his career but only after a flag, mark of the year and goal of the year. More than most.
What an amazing video
Albert Proud was another wasted talent. He was lucky he didn’t end up spending life in prison after bashing his girlfriend who nearly died.
I think that Nathan Ablett was more about having other commitments that directed his drive elsewhere, rather than a lack of drive. Additionally, he is even more religious than his brother, and the media calling him the "son of God", so that sort of media attention is already vexing to him (at about the same personal level as a racial slur).
Chris yarran naturally gifted i still think what could have been ..
I hate the AFL they offer nothing no support
Its not the AFLs fault some players are druggos and useless c#nts, ppl need to take responsibility for there own actions
Adrian McAdam is a sad story. He would have been an ATG and had a long career these days but the 90’s weren’t great for indigenous fellas.
Isn't it believed that dayle garlett is the one behind the clarkson allegations?
Yeah I am pretty sure he was one of them.
yachovich was a gun
Mc Cartin was lucky he didnt get knocked out from that handshake. Weakest chin in history
Irving mosquito has to be up there
He was never that good though?
Essendon fans and Dodoro hyped him up way too much. Hawthorn didn't bother matching Essendon's bid for him in the draft, which is usually a good indicator that a player probably isn't that good
It’s sad how many of these guys are indigenous blokes and their downfall is more commonly than not drugs and alcohol
No more waste of talent than Phil Carmen
Probably worth learning how to pronounce the name, “Jakovich” (not Yakovich) if you’re going to make a video with him in it.
Commentators and such said Jakovich but since it’s a Croatian name it can be pronounced Yakovich.
Awesome video
Anthony Morabito is the saddest story for me
Laurence Angwin, one the biggest wasted talents ever. Stealing from teammates at Adelaide, drugs at Carlton . Could have been anything.
not to mention his bullshit reasons for missing training.. a legend!!!
Great vid
Anyone see a common theme here??
Yeah , I also know a few of a lighter complexion who also could have been stars if they had the drive required. Boomer was not the best Harvey to play AFL, his brother maybe had more talent but liked a beer, smoke and punt and still kicks goals for fun in suburban footy.
No
Nathan Ablett was pretty ordinary. Liam Jurrah is the best I’ve seen that never went on with it.
Weres Ivring mosquito
Jarrah was strong athletic and skilled... sad waste, but footy aint always the be all and end all for some
I sore Nathan Ablett play for Warragul after he finished AFL. He really wasn't that good.
It is sad to see so many indigenous boy's on this list. They are brilliant to watch at full flight.
how many times do we hear huge raps on players as "the best Ive seen for natural ability"..blah blah ,,natural ability only goes so far .
You’ll Probably be able to throw tarryn thomas in that in a few years
Cousins suffered untreated bipolar disorder, so he was doomed from the start. His norm was our high, so he self-medicated to feel "normal." Sad.
Dan Conners and Sydney Stack
Speaking of yarran.... why did judd think Carlton was a good idea???
Because most the Eagles were on the gear.
