Nearly three years after I had a crack at deciding to rank the Top 50 AFL Goals of All Time, I've turned my attention to the high flyers of the game and have cast my opinion on the best marks ever.
To say this was challenging would be an understatement. Not only did I have to source the videos from a multitude of places (usually my own DVDs, but with some exceptions - thanks to every fellow footy historian on YT), trying to place these marks in positions and rank them against each other was near impossible.
I began with a shortlist of 85 of what I considered the best ever marks and whittled them down to 50 with much deliberation. Hopefully there are a couple of lesser-known classics that you mightn't have seen before (one of my top 10 picks has gone truly unnoticed because of the time of year it was taken).
I've tried to stick to the same tried and true formula that pleased viewers in my last compilation - no fancy effects, no music, just action - but of course with the various sources there may sometimes be soft background music that I just can't remove.

I'm not a Essendon supporter but #2 has to be best mark I have ever seen. He was virtually horizontal when he took it

Moorcroft is out and out the best mark ever taken in the AFL.
He gets as high as the great chest grabs from smith Tarrant etc but he has only two hands to grab it all this while horizontal.
Height isn't what makes this mark impressive, plenty of the other marks like Smith, Allison, Farmer etc are higher. Its that he jumped a bit too early and then had to stretch backwards almost horizontal to mark it. Freeze it at 14:47

Gary Moorcroft is still the best of all time by far. The extension he got on that mark is fucking unreal. (From a pies supporter)

Jonathan Brown and Nick Riewoldt's marks are the best I've seen. All the others look spectacular when they are up so high but it takes guts to do what Brown and Riewoldt did.
I remember Wanganeen taking one in the same vein too

7:16 - Great that you included Jezza's screamer against Richmond - it is totally ignored against his Grand Final mark, but it is a much better grab - he got the ride and sat on top of his Richmond opponent for a very, very long time!
Absolutely. I actually think his Grand Final mark is a little over rated. Got to say, this was the first time i had seen this other mark. I agree, much better than the other
It's the best mark out of the fifty in my opinion, although saying that, Gary Ablett Snr took them every week in his younger days but are all overshadowed by the one over Pert.

Agree totally. I've never seen it before. Very reminiscent of Burton's mark against Carlton in 2009. Like he was crowd surfing the pack. Jezza was before his time. If he and Ablett Snr. where playing today, they'd adapt easily to the modern priority of fast ball movement with the added advantage of their big marking, long kicking and one on one skills of their day. Today's players can lack these abilities due to the priority on fast ball handling.
I'm so glad I got to see Walkers mark. He hit his head pretty bad prior to it and he still manages to take one of the greatest marks in AFL.

Best compilation I've ever seen - very accurate and diverse.
That said, Gary Moorcroft's mark is just insane, I'd always put it at #1. It was a split second decision to even go for it. Practically ended his career taking that mark.

27th. He was robbed. The mark of the century deserves a slightly higher place than that. One handed, horizontal, resting on the defemders head. Top 5 for sure.

Capper's best mark wasn't even in the list.
Capper was robbed at 27 as should've been top 15 for sure the skill level to mark it one handed laying horizontal on the back of Langford.
J Brown at 17 was most courageous gutsy mark ever running back into a pack seriously could've got killed only eyes for the ball.
#35 Howe, massively underrated

Sampi’s mark is a masterpiece.
Tony Modra certainly knows how to mark! What a legend some of the others I really liked were: Brendan Goddard, Gary Moorcroft, Jeff Farmer, Stephan Silvani, Johnathan Brown and Nick Riewoldt.
Jeremy Howe against the Swans at 38 is ridiculous he is so high and he takes it in the hands more credit for that aswell. Has to be top 5

I'm glad Shaun Smith made number 1, I remember watching this live on TV as a 13 year old and it instantly burnt into my mind as the greatest mark I've ever seen. I swear he could have touched the sky that night! Bordering on 21 years later, this is still my number 1. Just Amazing!

Shauns mark was the best ever....if you see the replay early enough he is standing shoulder to shoulder with the bloke who's shoulders he is STANDING on a second later, and the flash behind the goal square was by an old duck who yolo'd the best photo in human history......as awarded on the footy show

Garry Moorcroft is 4 toot tall and he leaped onto the guys neck, and had to take the ball overhead, fully outstretched, as he was falling backwards in mid air.

Ablett, Modra, Roach, Howe, Burton, Capper, Betts, Wingard, vanderhar, wanganeen, Brown, Lynch, Rewvolt all took 10 marks each that were better than Moorcrofts. Moorcroft doesn’t make the top 100. Farmer, Nic Nat, Tarrent, , Micheal Mitchel???? Moorcoft nowhere near it, maybe not even in the top 500

This is actual proof that Andrew Walker's mark in 2011 was so much better than Karakouer's Mark in the same year. It was the worst decision for him to get mark of the year in 2011. Walker is in the top 5 when Krakouer's Mark was all the way back at number 50

Great Video! Jeremy Howe's ones against Port and Swans were in the same year. Swans no. 35, port no.21. yet swans one ranked MOTY.
Yeah I liked the Port one better. I think he got up higher and he took the mark well above the eyes.
Howe himself rates the swans mark as his favourite, even better that his Queens birthday grab for Collingwood against Melbourne wich I noticed didn't even make the list. Weird.

Heavily considered. Was in my 50-60 range. I didn't apply context to this marks video as much as I did to the goals video, for obvious reasons. A mark doesn't add anything to the scoreboard.
At the end of the day it was a floating pack mark across the front - a great one at that, but he didn't get more than a foot and a half off the ground and was able to have an entirely free run at the footy. It probably has its place in another compilation. Best Grand Final Moments, or something.

I'm with Dashi on this one - Barry may not have flown high but the pressure and importance of that mark in the dying minutes of the GF - it arguably won them the flag.
Fantastic compilation,no arguments from me other than Ablett Snr and Capper probably deserve a couple more each

Michael Mitchell took the mark of the year in 1990 against Fitzroy at the MCG. It should have been included among this top 50 list.

Best I ever saw "live" was the Brett Alison one, I was behind the goals at that end & when he took it the place went berserk.
Jimpotamus I was there too! It was just such a buzz! First time I’ve ever seen Collingwood supporters so impressed and great full to see the opposition take a spekky and almost conceded defeat because of that grab. It’s etched in my memory and the buzz is still there.
Jimpotamus its a shame they didn’t capture it in all its glory! I was between the wing and forward pocket and F%-+ me if that wasn’t the highest I’ve seen anyone jump! Even though it was only captured by one shitty angle , they know it was a great mark and that’s why it seems to turn up in the top ten of all time! Damn if only we had a shot at ground level!
If you pause the video at 11.42 and 11.43 have a look at Collingwoods Christiansen “I think” face! It says it all that day and being a north supporter and being their to watch it from the pocket! Every Collingwood supporter was also so happy to be their to see the grab!
Changed my view of their supporters from that day on, they knew they witnessed something special and were very congratulatory to us north supporters! To top it off we had a great win and it was a great game from start to finish.
Great call, proves to you that we can all get along when it comes to witnessing the very special feats :)

Nice selection +extraverse. Appreciate your detailed vid description too. I'm in _no way_ criticising, but here is my 5¢ worth.... #19 @9:00 by Winnie the Roo is the greatest mark of all time. Look how far from the goal square he is when Wayne Carey kicks it! He sprints goalwards roughly with the flight of the ball, keeping his eyes on it the entire time, which means he has to launch himself almost blindly - SIDEWAYS - in the rough direction of what turned out to be Brendon Lade's back. Crikey!
Winston also took a HELL UNDERRATED screamer against Essendon [coincidently Peter Bell had front row seats both times] which I'll attempt to link in a separate comment.
At least 2 of those marks were taken in the finals and hence didn't qualify for official _Mark of the Year_ consideration. Which is bullshiat. #9 @12:02 by Aaron Edwards is an absolute RING SCRINGER.

From an artistic point of few I reckon the best three (in any order) are: Capper horizontal one hander, Modra mid-air twist and Moorcroft backstrecher.
Alex Jesalenkos mark is the best of all time he took that over the ruckman and it turned the whole game around and Carlton won the flag

questionable ranking order: luke mcpharlin's was surely better than some of those that beat him, and capper surely should have gone higher, but great choices overall, awesome work, thanks for this compilation.
Royce Hart in the 1967 GF, Bill Ryan in the 1968 1SF and Steve Silvagni v Collingwood in 1988 and Gary Ablett snr in the 1989 1SF say hello.

Wayne Pyke his mark against Melbourne in the 1989 finals series should have been in there for sure..

So true. And in my humble opinion the one which got there wasn't even his best, and was debatable as to whether he controlled it to the ground. Some of the body on body marks that he took against Mick Martyn were just as spectacular, if not more so.
A lot of people think this wasn't a mark, and a lot of people are just wrong (or blinded by their dislike of the guy/team). As he rotates sideways on Perts shoulders, his left hand taps the ball back onto his chest and then into the elbow/upper right arm where he controls it there to the ground. Its only when he hits the ground that its jolted loose. As well as the huge leap , THIS is what makes this mark in the top 5 best of all time. You can see the ball clearly in his right arm at 14:14 just before he hits the ground
