We lost Cass’ voice too early and Julie lost hers too early as well due to medical negligence and malpractice. The world has lost two of the greatest female voices, but thankfully we have performances like this recorded so we can watch them forever.
Cass was such a natural talent. Nothing forced, nothing phony, nothing extraneous. She and Julie harmonize beautifully and they are singing live. Two great talents and Cass would have enjoyed a big big career had she lived.
I have been singing almost my entire life and this is, by far, the best harmonizing I have ever heard. Both ladies had perfect pitch and hit every note. I have no doubt that I will listen to this over and over. Cass Elliott was so unique and special. She had a spark that can't be described. Your eye just goes directly to her. Rest in love, beautiful lady. ♥️
OH MY GOODNESS!!! 'Like a Bridge Over Troubled Water' It gives me chills!! Julie and Cass are wonderful! Just about the most beautiful thing I have ever heard! What a gift these amazing ladies gave us.
I forgot that the human voice could be so beautiful with the way it gets drowned out in so much music, or the singer just sings loudly and coarsely. These 2 sing like angels; and Mama Cass may very well be one.
I had been looking literally for years for this clip; Simon and Garfunkel should be very proud of this take on their music. Julie Andrews is a musical theatre legend, Cass Elliot is a rock/pop legend. Their voices and personalities blended so felicitously that we, the listeners, have much to be grateful for. I will never understand those mean-spirited mediocrities, those sad losers, who find it necessary to comment on Ms Elliot's size. I have met guys who do that, they are usually pathetic flabby or scrawny specimens who couldn't attract a woman of any size to save their lives. Remember, you fools, fat people can always lose weight -- but you all will NEVER have talent!!
That comment was so very on-point and so very eloquently stated! You, sir, are a breath of fresh air. Thank you for the obvious thought you invested in your statements, your commentary on the small-mindedness of certain types of people & for your recognition of how woefully *under*-lauded Mama Cass Elliot was and still is. Her talent and remarkable skill (not to mention versatility!) really shine here. For those with an ear that is actually trained in music (academically trained or experientially trained, it matters little here), it is manifestly obvious that it is Cass Elliot who displays the most versatility & skill in the use of her instrument (ie - her voice) in both her talent & in how she chose to apply her chosen methodology throughout this duet. Put simply, for those who actually know *how* to listen to (and, by extension, comment relevantly on) music, it is *very* clear that Cass modelled her style of delivery after Julie Andrews' style of music in this medley, not the other way around. And I *LOVE* Julie Andrews!!! I'm just giving credit where it is due, both to the performers and to you, sir, who clearly know what to listen and look for in musical performances. Thank you!
Cass had such a warm, friendly quality in her voice. I think she also appeared on the Carol Burnette show, even did sketches with her. She was really good, had the timing and everything. No telling what she could have become if she had lived. A Broadway star, anything.
Andrews, a child prodigy, is in perfect form as usual. With the talent and uniqueness of Cass Elliot, these two are great. Elliot was so great in her day and had a great ear, she could harmonize with anyone.
27 people have taste . . . but only in their mouths. Seriously, how could you dislike this? This is classic and fabulous! Two of the best voices the world has ever been graced with.
25 dislikes on this?! I think this is one of the best things I've ever heard!! Mama Cass and Julie Andrews...singing together...DELICIOUS!!!! Mama Cass was a fantastic, if not one of the greatest, singers of all time! Her voice was so beautiful...as was Karen Carenter's. Two great women with strong, beautiful voices that have yet to be matched today.
Wow, who'd'a thunk that the delicate British soprano voice would meld so well with the brassy American alto? On music by the best folk duo to exist, no less. I've long revered both singers (as well as S&G), but I would never thought to combine them all! Dang, thank you, Internet, for allowing us to see these years after airing. And thank you, OP, for posting this!
Never has such a talented performer been subject to such vitriol as Cass Elliot. Her ability to harmonize that beautiful voice is amazing; this duet in particular, as well as another she did with Andrews of Elliot's hits are proof. Two great voices that worked perfectly together. It is so sad we lost this gem, and I'm grateful that TH-cam provides a forum for this, as otherwise they would be impossible to find. Like others here I wish they would find the originals and re-mater them. How priceless they would be. I'm honored that despite "Mama" dying many years before I was born that I can help carry her legacy when so many of my generation will never know her name or appreciate her amazing talent.
+Bob Upanddowne So true! A lot of music I listened to when I was young (I'm 45) I didn't get to see the accompanying video, now I get to enjoy them all again on TH-cam.
This made me happy in ways I can't even describe. Simon & Garfunkel songs (mostly from the Graduate, my God), Mama Cass and Julie singing them together, and those VOICES. When Julie passes - please, please not soon - we will have lost two of the most exquisite human voices in the history of this world. They make me hope for humanity, that is how strong their voices are - straight into my heart.
It's possible for two people with lovely, distinctive voices to sing together but not sound good. These two were practically born to sing together. Just sublime! 💖👏👏
I never knew that they had ever collaborated together. I've never seen this before either. How Fun And Cool Was That! I love them both. We miss Mama Cass Elliott, may she rest in peace.
And now, we miss the voice of Julie Andrews, too. This is a cautionary word. We never know how life will change...what will be taken away from us, even though we are still alive.
Cass Elliot was such an immensely talented woman she's a fantastic singer, dynamic performer, fabulous personality I think had she lived she would've achieved the highest heights in her career. She was only getting started....
Perfection! What a treat. Never knew how many singers the great Cass Elliot sang with...she was always superb. Gone two years after this show. Still greatly missed!
I'm convinced had Cass Elliot lived she would be remembered and revered by women as Bob Marley and John Lennon are by everyone today - singular talents whose lives were taken WAY too soon.
+Tony G. Pizza I agree. She had massive, untapped potential. To me she would have been a stand-up because she was funny: dry, ironic, laconic but she mayjust as well have been an actress because she had a big, dramatic personality, which would have translated well to the stage or the screen or she may just have carried on singing and we would all be the better for it.
+Tony G. Pizza She probably would have had a bunch of hits, at least thru the 70s, perhaps much longer, if she could have made the transition to the techno 80s.
I attended this performance in the 70s and it brought back better times in our country Cass Elliot was my favorite during those wonderful years folks today have no idea how wonderful those years were
Not only truly excellent but you can see that they were both loving it! There is nothing like music when it all comes together, and these two were at the peak of their game.
I would never have imagined these two together despite the fact they are two of my favorites. However, they are absolutely beautiful together. Their voices blend and harmonize as though they sang together all the time.
Its clips like this that make youtube so wonderful. I'm not afraid to admit that as a man I had both tears of joy and sadness watching this. pure gold.
Body image is but one image, one dimension and people have so many facets, so many dimensions to them. The day when talent cannot burst free of our stereotypes is a day that performing is forever separated from the arts. If we were mature enough to figure that out in the 1970's we ought to have stayed that way 35 years later.
The Julie Andrews Hour absolutely needs to be put on DVD, I have been looking for full episodes they aired! All these clips I see are anazing, why it didn't last for several seasons is beyond me! That was before my time but why America? I love Julie Andrews, seen all her films on Amazon! Mary Poppins & The Sound of Music are classic! She made those films magical & timeless!
I was a child when Cass was singing, her voice brought me joy and gave me goosebumps. Her death was the first time my heart broke. To lose such a voice so young, I loved her voice then, be I love it still. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
When the Mamas and Papas ended, Cass didn't like that the "Mama" moniker stuck with her.Though her first two solo albums were marketed as such, when she left that record company, she was able to drop the Mama title. Her next two albums were labeled as her real name Cass Elliot, Her last album, a live album, was entitled Don't Call Me Mama Anymore, which includes a song of the same name. In the last line of the song she says "You can call me Cass." In her honor, I never refer to her as Mama Cass unless I'm referring to her in context of that group. Otherwise, I just call her Cass..
+Robert Stoico I share your EXACT sentiment! I only speak of Mama Cass when referring to her M&P days. I feel this is my little gesture of respect to this amazing lady. I feel that true Cass fans ought to call her Cass Elliot when talking about her solo career (or for that matter, even when talking about the Big 3 years, and the Mugwumps years)
Now. that was a treat. Never even knew Mama Cass and Julie Andrews did anything together.. Thanks TH-cam. Love Mama Cass since I was a small boy in Jamaica. (54) We share the same name.
Touching in so many ways. Who could've picked a better female duet to do S&G songs. When Cass gave Julie a look during the words "I'm on your side" - given the times - when Julie returned the look it was a moment of solidarity. During "Bridge" I got the feeling Julie was almost reaching out to her, knowing how large she was getting and the problems surfacing. Thanks for the upload, this is to cherish!
I love how Cass tailors her technique to match Julie's. She is enunciating more than usual, spacing a little more between words, and altering her vowels ever so slightly. She's the reason this duet sounds so good.
I had heard of Julie Andrews before and was such a fan of hers, however I had never heard of Cass Elliot, the first time I watched this I was just listening to Julie but once I had actually heard Cass her singing without Julie Andrews I could see and hear how truly AMAZING Cass was! I feel so ashamed for thinking that Julie Andrews was the better singer here, I am truly a fan of Cass Elliot!!!! :)
Cass has such a powerful voice, she's showing amazing restraint here. Speaks to a talented singer. Then of course there is Julie Andrews (nuff said). They blend very nicely!!
*sigh* so beautiful both of them! Just sublime. And wonderful songs. Such Talent. And, quite frankly I think Mama Cass Elliot was a beautiful woman, period.
times have changed for the worse with things like this im 13 and Julie Andrews is my idol, inperation, and hero she is just amazing even now!!!!! and for that im greatful but i also hate it that we dont have singers like this now too. but of course no one can replace Julie Andrews in my heart EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can't believe I'm hearing this again! what a time to be alive. too bad I was old enough to remember but too young to appreciate it. Tears can't express the joy
What a wonderful duet Mrs Julie Andrews and Mama Cass and the voice of Julie was so beatiful it was a great loss she can't sing any more and Mrs Cass another great loss she is gone, voices like these are irreplaceable. !!!amazing!!!!!
I count it about 42 years later and these ladies still raise the hair on the back of my neck. Cass Elliot passed away much to young. Julie Andrews was just as amazing a talent and should have had more support from the music business. What could have been.
Simon & Garfunkel medley by Julie and Mama Cass Eliot. The '60s didn't got any better than that. Oh boy, I miss it 'cause I was there! Is like "SOLE2SOUL" said "It brought tears to my eyes!" TEARS OF JOY, man! Simply Beautiful! Thanks for the moment!
Two beautiful songbirds and the song they created together, just wow-and live to boot! I wonder how much they practiced. This is amazing, brought me to tears.
The Mamas and the Poppins

Truly a very underappreciated comment. Applauding your creativity.
LMAO
Game over!!!!! SZ xo 😍
I can't even 🤣🤣🤣
one of the best medleys ever on TV.
I want to go BAAAACK! Such terrific memories of those glorious days. 😍😍 The music was off the chain!
The world was a better place because of Mama Cass.
It really was
Honestly!!!

Remember when television was full of talented people singing together?
Yup. Not anymore
Mama Cass Alto voice and Julie Andrews soprano voice complement and blend together wonderfully.
yes ---very nice.
The perfect duet for beauty and the beast.
Yes !
We lost Cass’ voice too early and Julie lost hers too early as well due to medical negligence and malpractice. The world has lost two of the greatest female voices, but thankfully we have performances like this recorded so we can watch them forever.

Watching this, gobsmacked, 52 years later. What a treasure to be shared. Thank you
Two of my absolute favorite female voices of different genres, singing together??! There IS a heaven!
Their voices go so beautifully well together, don't they?
Agreed. Love both women as singers and people. Best different genre duo before Little Drummer Boy by Bing Crosby/David Bowie
Mike Rodriguez You are a vile creature. Quality music is wasted on bottom feeders such as yourself.
Mike Rodriguez People like you remind me how wonderful nice people are. It must suck to be such a vile being.
I know know ... it's GREAT.....
I have a confession to make; I have a crush on Mama Cass. What a wonderful talent she was...I miss her.
died long before her time ..
So many cruel remarks, Cass gave us so many great songs, a true artist, let's remember her contributions...
+MerleOberon Unique beautifully strong voice - and a great personality too.
Amen
...and she was a very pretty girl too!
She got a mean treatment by people because she was overweight, how ridiculous is that?
@@dilsiam I know, it's a very shallow and small-minded world sometimes.

Harmonising is what mama Cass did best, it brought the best out of her voice, a silken layer hovering above or below... Amazing!!!
Completely agree. It's hard to tell where one voice ends and the other begins. Very beautiful ❤
I read Cass was absolutely stunned at how well their two voices went together. they sure do
Their harmonizing is flawless.
OH MY GOODNESS!!! 'Like a Bridge Over Troubled Water' It gives me chills!! Julie and Cass are wonderful! Just about the most beautiful thing I have ever heard! What a gift these amazing ladies gave us.
Hi Diana💐💐
"Hello, Darkness, my old friend ..."
Never thought I'd hear ever Julie Andrews sing that.
And I never thought she'd show her naked breasts but she did.
@@cannonball666 🤣
I had no idea this existed. What a nice, unique surprise. High quality harmony. They should have recorded an album, or two, together.
Patsy Cline, Cass Elliot, and Julie Andrews are 3 of the top female vocalists ever. Beautiful voices.
I forgot that the human voice could be so beautiful with the way it gets drowned out in so much music, or the singer just sings loudly and coarsely. These 2 sing like angels; and Mama Cass may very well be one.
NP4Mayans ...you are so right!!! ...I couldn't say it better, dear friend...

Mama Cass just loved to sing, you can see it and feel it. Both she and Julie Andrews always made people happy when they sang. This video is a gem!!
Watching this for the first time in 2019 and I believe I have just seen one of the most beautiful duos of all time!.

Agree completely. Mamma Cass was instrumental in helping a lot of great musicians get started, Crosby, Stills and Nash, for example...
This may be the greatest thing ive ever found on youtube

I feel like crying. I feel cheated that I was not around to hear Cass live, or Julie in her prime, for that matter. Bring back the wacky variety show!
