There are many good and interesting things about a Kris video, but one of the things that I really like is that Kris will use traditional methods where they work well, but he is not afraid to use modern methods of construction where they have an advantage. Hence we get to see fantastic traditional oak framing, then next time, CNC plasma cutting. Keep up the excellent work Kris.😀🇬🇧
It is a pleasure to watch your amazing skills with wood. I stumbled across your videos of your beautiful roundhouse and watched them all in one sitting. You are a true artist with handtools and a chainsaw!
Impressive! Finished dough bowl has a strong connection to the original slab of wood. It feels earthy and strong. It was interesting to see all the hand tools used for chipping, scraping, and shaving the wood. Also your large wood slab which holds piece in place. I would love to see a video on your tools, what they are for, and the manual wood stand/ grip/ seat you use. Thanks!
Since Kris hasn't answered, I'll run through it. You can google the individual things. First he planes it with his No 4 hand plane. Then he sits on his bowl horse, which is mainly for carving bowls and is a specialized version of a shaving horse, and uses his draw knife (the one with a handle at both ends). The layout with a string is a traditional way of laying out ellipses. He then proceeds to hollowing out the bowl with his hand adze while the wood is held by his two holdfasts. He uses a hatchet on his chopping block to take off as much waste as possible. Then he uses a big gouge to hollow out the bowl some more. He then refines the shape with his draw knife on the bowl horse. After drying he's sanding it, and, as he explains, he's sanding because the wood was tearing. Otherwise using scrapers or similar leaves a better surface than sanding. He then finishes it with boiled linseed oil using his bare hands, which you should never do because it contains drying agents that are toxic until it has cured. When it has cured, it's food safe. Natural boiled linseed oil doesn't have drying agents, but I doubt that was natural. And I have done it many times myself, so I'm not any better myself 😅 The bowl is a lovely version of a traditional design.
Wowww, what a fantastic work! I like the shape of the bowl very much. recently i made cup carving video where i improvised a adze with a victorinox pocket knife. Greets from Switzerland Felix
Very nice bowl. I recommend you invest in a hoof rasp, about $35 here. You will find a lot of uses for it in woodworking. It hogs great, and can smooth like a power sander also. I make kitchen utensils and functional wood art, and it is one of my main hand tools. Easy to use, and a real time saver.
Just getting started with hand carving bowls and I'd like to know what the name of the type of table is that you use to pin the log down on to skin the bark. Did you make it yourself or can they be purchased? Thanks for the video...very cool bowl
ASMR~table screeches. Attacks wood with loud hand choppy tool and hand axe. Wind giving mic raspberries. Nailed it. 5/7 perfect score. Would recommend.

Beautiful piece of work...one thing though I know this is an older video but an ASMR video should be in normal time with the audio a little bit boosted if you can't hear every chip getting carved....I don't really watch ASMR videos but just letting you know to keep yourself from getting thumbs down
Came for the asmr... not exactly asmr.... but wood carving is a great craft! Love watching videos of talented wood carvers... this bowl turned out nice!
Kris, I'm a big fan of your work and I aspire to be as good as you someday. I have the tools to make some bowls and spoons, but I need to get ahold of some wood. I don't own a chain saw, but during the warmer months of the year, people post free wood all the time especially if it's from storm damage. I have an old pick up that I plan to put a cheap Harbor Freight crane in the back by the tailgate. This way when I want to get some of that free wood, I can get it myself. It's a hand crank crane but I plan to modify it by adding a battery-run winch. This will make it totally independent for me. I hate relying on others and it's always at their leisure. I've heard you need to carve from greenwood. Is that true? I can't image carvers getting green wood ever time they want to carve a bowl or spoon. You're talented Kris, and if you choose a different path of work in life, you can always earn money making these on the side. Any tips you may have would be welcomed.
+me me hi, i just did a video about the tools i use. it goes over the bowl horse in detail. its my most recent video, you can find it on the channel, kris
Very Nice Work! I love woodworking and am always looking for a new different project. You just showed it to me. I am going to the store to get a hatchet this weekend to try it. I noticed that you dried in plastic bags, I have seen others dry in paper bags, but they are hard to find these days. 1. How long did you leave in bags to dry? 2. how often do they crack with this method? Thanks and again awesome work!
love the video, I just started bowl carving . Ive learned alot watching You . if only I could find a GB or HK adze, they seem imposable to find in the U.S. right now . anyway Thanks for sharing Your skills .
wow, this is so beautiful. I so appreciate the labor of love & skill that went into creating this bowl. Do you ever make them for sale? I would buy one : )
I would like to do stuff like this. My question is where would I find an adze that size, gouges and seasoned wood good enough for doing this stuff with?
Good video, I'm going to try a big bowl soon. What's the width and sweep on that Karlsson gouge? And are you satisfied with it or would you have bought different if you had the chance? Thank you!
+idahspark it really depends on the type of bowl you will carve, my adze dose not have much of a sweep and it annoys me alot. i want to get a 70 at some point. so maybe that is the answer?
+idahspark woodsmithexperience.co.uk/shop/product/hans-karlsson-carving-gouge-90-40-bent/ that is the gouge i am using in the video, and it is great. if i could afford it i would buy the other one as well with more sweep but they don't come cheap. hans karlson do great tools the ground and the drawknife i have from them are my favourite tools. by the way. i have just done another video of bowl carving, just incase you had not seen it. its on my channel
It is a very nice work!May I kindly ask about your shaving horse on this video? Any chance you can maybe share how to make it , some plans? I have ordinary one but like yours better. Greetings from Poland
Chris, Where did you find a compass that large? Lovely project too. What kind of wood did you use? The growth rings really take it to a different level. Just beautiful!!
Wooden bowls and trenchers have been used throughout history for everything from water to stew. I would probably avoid putting food in this particular bowl due to the "sappy" nature of cedar trees and their tendency to impart unwanted flavors
Hi kris, watched this ages ago and have come back to it as I remembered this bench that u are working at 8.07. What do u call a bench like that? Did u make a video of making the bench? I’m guessing you mAde it also?
Great Job :D Just a little question, i'm still a beginner and don't know a lot : At 9:30, what does wood drying do ? And how to do it ? Just leave it in bags for a couple of hours ?
+Daher Makozak i leave the wood in the bag for about a week, taking it out of the bag for an hour at a time everyday, this makes the wood dry slowly and stops it from cracking.
Kris, you earned a sub just for that string trick for drawing the shape. I was amazed lol. Thanks mate

How precious and personal every tool and possession must have been in the past!
Imagine doing this with stone tools.
It is a pleasure to watch your amazing skills with wood. I stumbled across your videos of your beautiful roundhouse and watched them all in one sitting. You are a true artist with handtools and a chainsaw!
Geometry props for marking out an ellipse the old-school way. :)

Just found your channel, starting from your first vid on here, you are a man of many talents.
Very elegantly designed bowl
Beautiful job. So much hard work.
That's a beautiful piece
Gorgeous bowl! I like to use cabinet scrapers especially in the bowl before sanding. It does make for a different look though.
Good looking bowl, nice string trick 👍

Really good looking bowl!
ASMR in the title, proceeds to slam some wood with an axe 10/10

"ASMR"
ASMR~table screeches. Attacks wood with loud hand choppy tool and hand axe. Wind giving mic raspberries.
Nailed it. 5/7 perfect score. Would recommend.
Do you have any hard and fast rules on how ling to dry the work? Or is it just a case of looking periodically and making a judgement?
That is really beautiful.
Fabiola Anderson thank you :)
Brilliant work
What a real talent you have.....beautiful work .... .... Have any for sale?
Happy Thanksgiving Tommy. Love your videos
Beautiful mate,if you ever get to Aberaeron would love to meet you.

Try drying in a cardboard box with the flaps folded over works great! Dry a lot of bowls and spoons that way!
Thanks for the video. Nice work.

Very nice, one quick question, do you usually hollow the base out slightly to avoid rocking?
Very nice bowl dude liking the table as well.

Drew Langsner's Country Workshops sells them or, to save a bit of money, eBay.
Terry snyder I found one on eBay for pretty cheap and it works great
That's the handyman youl'd like to have in your house!!!
Nice work , man!
Very nice job! Where did you find the large compass you used in the video?
Great vid. So can you use freshly chopped wood and dry it out in a bag? How long did you have to dry it for?

+MrZ 0420 thanks, i will
Nice work. Lovely shape too. Is that linseed oil you used?
wow, this is so beautiful. I so appreciate the labor of love & skill that went into creating this bowl. Do you ever make them for sale? I would buy one : )
Sic bow, your def talented, l but this is not ASMR

squach623 !!!!! Google is your best friend
I would like to do stuff like this. My question is where would I find an adze that size, gouges and seasoned wood good enough for doing this stuff with?

Beautiful work! You sure that's not mulberry wood?
Excelente trabalho....parabéns pela habilidade!!!
nice work bro
Good video, I'm going to try a big bowl soon. What's the width and sweep on that Karlsson gouge? And are you satisfied with it or would you have bought different if you had the chance? Thank you!
I'm about to order and I'm thinking of 35mm and 55 or 70 sweep. Wich one would you suggest?
+idahspark it really depends on the type of bowl you will carve, my adze dose not have much of a sweep and it annoys me alot. i want to get a 70 at some point. so maybe that is the answer?
+DIY Harbor: Kris Harbour Thank you! So what sweep is that Karlsson gouge in the video?
+idahspark woodsmithexperience.co.uk/shop/product/hans-karlsson-carving-gouge-90-40-bent/
that is the gouge i am using in the video, and it is great. if i could afford it i would buy the other one as well with more sweep but they don't come cheap. hans karlson do great tools the ground and the drawknife i have from them are my favourite tools. by the way. i have just done another video of bowl carving, just incase you had not seen it. its on my channel
I think after you have made a little more mulch, you'll ditch the pencil for the inspirational freedom of the eye driven edge tool!
Me: *trying to relax*
Ad: *Ay Ay Ay Ay Ay Ay*
i like this good idea thank you
Awesomeness!
When I got to the end, and he's rubbing oil onto the wood...I got the distinct feeling the wood liked it too.
It is a very nice work!May I kindly ask about your shaving horse on this video? Any chance you can maybe share how to make it , some plans? I have ordinary one but like yours better. Greetings from Poland
Ficou muito bonita essa gamela, parabéns.
Chris, Where did you find a compass that large? Lovely project too. What kind of wood did you use? The growth rings really take it to a different level. Just beautiful!!
The compass is made by Veritas.
What would a bowl like that sell for?
I like the chisels you use - what make are they please or have you made them yourself...?
+glyn evans ....Ps have you heard of Alan Mantle ? if not I recommend you look at his work (y) pps your work is great
+glyn evans hi, most of them are hans karlson chisels very nice but they are a little expensive.
Thanks... and thanks again !
very cool!
would you be able to put hot things in it like soup or something like that?
Wooden bowls and trenchers have been used throughout history for everything from water to stew. I would probably avoid putting food in this particular bowl due to the "sappy" nature of cedar trees and their tendency to impart unwanted flavors
Hi kris, watched this ages ago and have come back to it as I remembered this bench that u are working at 8.07. What do u call a bench like that? Did u make a video of making the bench? I’m guessing you mAde it also?

Hey Kris, what's the oil caracteristic ? What's the name or the type ? I've never heard of "boilled oil". Have you ever tried wood-fire-carving
Skol Louarn Bushcraft - Survie - Rando Pretty sure it's boiled linseed oil.
What for is the drying process before applying oil?
Very nice, I made something very similar but on a slightly smaller scale. Liking your work bench, handmade?
Woodcraft Hamster thanks alot, yeah all the holding tools are handmade, i carved the log for the horse and milled the slab for the table.
Great Job :D
Just a little question, i'm still a beginner and don't know a lot :

Kris Harbour Also, remember the addage about oiling..."Every day for a week, every week for a month, and every month for a year."
