      That is an adze. He's using one made by Gansfors Bruks.

      its an oil so it wont damage the electronics of the computer if split

      @@arkencraft8095 But can it conduct electricity? Short circuit? Some oils contain electrolytes and can conduct electricity, just like water. Particularly over distances found in PCB's and on microchip pins. Go pour oil in your computer now, see what happens.

      +lynda williams thanks lynda, we are off to wales next week to finish the foundation wall. and i might do some work with the digger as well. then we are going to go in march for a month to hopefully finish the roundhouse. i can't wait to move now.

    I was hoping this would be another video on your round house, but this was pretty good as well.
    It's mind blowing to me how you can hit with such precision at your age. Typically you'd only see this level precision from older craftsmen. Because of that during this video I kept thinking that you'd mess up an edge of your piece by continuing with the axe for as long as you did. :D

    great job Kris iv watched this a couple of times now. Unfortunately I don't have an adze yet but I manage with a 40mm bowl gouge which has a lovely polished bevel. My next project is a similar bowl but I don't have Beech but have Ash which has really nice figure. Maybe one day I do a video. What oil was you using please. Thanks

      looked like veg or sunflower cooking oil. food grade mineral oil is normally used for bowls, blocks etc

    Kris, a beautiful piece of work, and wood. I have just got a Gransfors Bruk carving axe, and I am expecting delivery of a Mora 12 knife today. My aim is to start with spoons and work up to bowls. Tell me, was the tree felled on private land and how do you go about getting permission to harvest some wood from it?

    Your bowls are among some of the nicest Ibe seen on here. The way you find your boards with strong is a new one on me and easiest for me to follow. Thanks for the video. It's too bad you have to work from a storage unit but in a way, it's better. You can leave the chips behind and not take them with you, lol.

      +Sislertx its about 20 hours of carving, with a week of drying time. I'm not very fast it could be done quicker but I'm not that bold with my axe strokes

    Kris, what was the noise the hand cross cut saw was making in the first few seconds of video- my cross cut has a much quieter sound- sort in rhythm to the back and forth movement - you know- hand tools driven by hand??

    Beautiful bowl and well done. I have been told that Mineral oil is preferred for the finish as it wont go rancid but if you are having no problems with the olive oil then no biggie. Mineral oil is very cheap and available at drug stores all over--Might want to check it out?

      +Tom Palmer Hi tom, well the problem is that it is so physically demanding sometimes you don't have the energy. i would love to do some turning as well. i have never turned a bowl on a lathe and really want to get in to it at some point. i just don't have the space or the tools at the moment. i think alot more projects would get done if i could stand in front of a lathe and work rather than swinging the axe getting blisters. i do enjoy it, but you have to be in the right mood and feeling strong.

    That poor axe at the start it will be ruined if you keep hitting it with a metal hammer. The butt of the axe head will mushroom DONT USE A METAL HAMMER!!!!!
