+lynda williams thanks lynda, we are off to wales next week to finish the foundation wall. and i might do some work with the digger as well. then we are going to go in march for a month to hopefully finish the roundhouse. i can't wait to move now.
I so love this. I just ordered some tools to start making projects like this, even though I have no idea about carving on wood 🤯 😬but I found out that this is a very cool work to learn. so exited about! wish me luck !
You are very good with your hand tools. I've never seen that string thing before...I will be using it. You can take the sharp edge of a rounded knife, or even a piece of broken glass and scrape wood and get a smother finish than sanding. I use an old stainless steel spoon sharpened on one side. A really outstanding job.
Beautiful job! I liked how you used the string and nails to make the design- a little bit of the old College Algebra and Trigonometry put to use! The grain on that wood was exceptional as well.
I was hoping this would be another video on your round house, but this was pretty good as well. It's mind blowing to me how you can hit with such precision at your age. Typically you'd only see this level precision from older craftsmen. Because of that during this video I kept thinking that you'd mess up an edge of your piece by continuing with the axe for as long as you did. :D
Really nice! I'm always surprised to see in these bowl carving videos that no one seems to be using cabinet scrapers to refine the surface. I've had great results using them on my humble projects.
I'm using a custom cabinet scraper on my first carved bowl. Made the scraper in about 5 minutes from a scrap bandsaw blade (3" wide). Layout, snip, file, done. Rolls chips.
Thanks for this video - Such a Beautiful bowl! We appreciate the time -speed up (made it fun to watch) made time to watch more of your videos :) Thanks for sharing your Artistry!!!
Your bowls are among some of the nicest Ibe seen on here. The way you find your boards with strong is a new one on me and easiest for me to follow. Thanks for the video. It's too bad you have to work from a storage unit but in a way, it's better. You can leave the chips behind and not take them with you, lol.
+Tom Palmer Hi tom, well the problem is that it is so physically demanding sometimes you don't have the energy. i would love to do some turning as well. i have never turned a bowl on a lathe and really want to get in to it at some point. i just don't have the space or the tools at the moment. i think alot more projects would get done if i could stand in front of a lathe and work rather than swinging the axe getting blisters. i do enjoy it, but you have to be in the right mood and feeling strong.
Beautiful bowl and well done. I have been told that Mineral oil is preferred for the finish as it wont go rancid but if you are having no problems with the olive oil then no biggie. Mineral oil is very cheap and available at drug stores all over--Might want to check it out?
Really nice work man. And what a great piece of wood. Beech is awesome, but you pay for it with blisters & calluses. Try some pine tar on your tool handles, it will help your grip.
I like the way you shaped the bottom! Pleasing to the eye, and stabelizing for when in use! At 4:09, tighten up that hold-fast!!ha,ha At 6:31, nice spalting! this is going to be a life changer!! Watch out, soon you will be in demand around town!
Hello, beautiful bowl. I am intrigued and have made many bowls on my lathe, but have latley turned to working with more hand tools and would like to attemp this gorgous bowl. Suggestions on what tool or brand i should look for ? Thanks
that string compass thing you used to make the ellipse was a joy to watch. what a simple tool.
I am really wondored as well. He does a good work
Regards from Brazil, Nik.
Brisolino
If you get the show The Woodwright’s Shop he has an episode where it explains the use of it he has a TH-cam channel also
