  • Affordable Rolex Sports Model A Future FLOP ?
    In today's episode of Federico Talks Watches I talk about the Rolex Explorer 214270 Mark 1. One of the most affordable Rolex sports watches. Is it a future flop? The Rolex Explorer 214270 was redesigned early on because of a pretty big flaw? Will the original Mark 1 explorer be a future classic or a future flop?

    As someone that owns the MKI 39mm I have to say I prefer it, I love the white Gold numerals without the lume. As for the short stubby hands, I looked hard at the dial when I first bought it, and frankly I didn’t really consider it that big of a deal. These days I’d completely forgotten about the short hands until watching this vid. It really isn’t that big of a deal. And if I was mad enough to sell it I could make a lot more than what I bought it for back in 2015.

    This watch has been called a ‘pig’ by Bark and Jack, and now you’ve jumped on the Bandwagon. I’ve had the opportunity to swap my mk1 dial and hands for Mk 2 at service but decided against it. Because they won’t just swap the hands - it’s a job lot.
    The Explorer fills my dress watch slot, and I am genuinely in love with the white gold numerals - that little touch of bling set off by the polished bezel is always a sight to behold.
    The ridiculous bandwagon overreactions on the hands is getting old - and most often perpetuated by people who don’t even own one.The lume on the minute hand stops perfectly where the lume on the indices starts. Could they be a touch longer? Maybe, but to lose the white gold numerals, it’s not worth it to me.
    My Mark 1 is staying with me and staying original. For those with the Mark 2, enjoy your beautiful, bolder more sporty version.

      @georgeomeliojr.2924 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Exactly my observation. The lume of the hands stop exactly where the lume of the indexes begin. Smaller and thinner hands makes it dressier.. But it is exactly what a versitile watch should be. Both sport and dress watch rolled into one..

    It’s a great watch! Love the look, love that there is no date, and I purposely bought the mk 1 because of the “slightly” shorter minute hand. And btw the prices are creeping up!

    I tried on this watch at the AD (CPO) and it looked elegant and nice. Did not notice the hands to be too small. That being said, the new Explorer 40 has better proportions than both 39mm versions and I added myself to the list for that one.

  • @duncanwood4489
    @duncanwood4489 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I also own this watch and prefer it - just looks more classic IMO and I love the White Gold numerals. Also, whilst the hands are a bit shorter I believe this was done with purpose as they blend in with the numerals as they pass over. Rolex doesn't just 'cobble' things together, but sure they make iterative changes as they perceive when they need to based on the market and what customers are saying. Anyway, do love your vids and content and always nice for healthy debate and discussion! Not bothered about the inherent value of the watch as will never leave the collection

    Absurd my explorer is "short handed" 214270. The hands are completely fine and unless you are staring at the mk1 and mk2 next to each other you wouldn't notice a difference.

    Not all discontinued Rolex benefit from increased popularity or go up in value. Take the Turn-o-graph for example. The jury is also still out on the white dial Milgauss, it was discontinued a few years back but my A.D. has had TWO sitting in the display case since that time and like this Explorer mark I it is way less attractive than similar models. Even if I knew this mark I Explorer was going to go up in value my OCD would prevent me wearing it!

    I have this and I much prefer the full gold numerals and going by the comments most people do. Like with any Rolex made in ‘small’ quantities I think they will become more desirable and increase in value over time.
    I’m wondering also if the value would increase if you had an AD change the hands in the mark 1 to the long hands?...then in my opinion you would have the best of both worlds🤔

    Explorer's in all their versions are a safe if a rather boring watch and I can't see them appreciating or depreciating significantly. I recently acquired the 40 mm Explorer having initially been drawn to the new 40mm Air-king which is a more likely candidate to gain in value (or not?) as it seems a very polarising watch that people either love or hate. Think I love it but after a lifetime of wrong decisions, I went for an Explorer.

  • @BenA_DD

    In my opinion, no Rolex will ever be a flop. If its weird or ugly it will be collectable just because its weird or ugly and no one bought it. In a decade or so people will be saying "Hey look, I have a stumpy Explorer, its ugly but it's different and relatively rare."

    @blueshirtbuddah1665 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Fed I enjoy your videos but I do think you are way off base with your hate for the 214270 Mk 1. It may not be a future collectible piece but it is far from being an ugly duckling. While the hands are short they are not ridiculously so. Also my 2016 model has Chroma light blue lume and not green Super Lumenova. Also the Mk 1 has more white gold than the new Mk 2 as the 3, 6 and 9 are solid white gold and as a result is much dressier than the Mk 2. Only time will tell if they shoot up it value, and I hope that they do. But regardless, I love my Explorer and it’s going to be in my collection for a very long time.

  • @jhudiel999
    @jhudiel999 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Mk2 will be more collectible than the Mk2 why? Cause it’s nicer. Getting either is almost equally hard to get in AD’s which means rarity is roughly the same for now (unless they release a bunch of mk2 suddenly). Besides how much of a mark up are people expecting even if it becomes a collectible? 2-4K in 15-20 years? Even if it’s more than a few thousand by that time you would be wearing a watch you might not prefer for the next decade hoping you can get a few thousands from initial purchase. It’s not a Daytona or a Sub.

    Those hands are, indeed, too short. Otherwise, it’s a well made, fairly nice-looking piece (somewhat similar in appearance to a Seiko 5) from a brand that mass produces decent, but not horologically significant, watches. However, that brand is Rolex, so there will always be people out there who are willing to over-pay for it. It won’t flop until the Rolex hype dies away.

How much lume do you really need, and really can you have to much gold? I'm glad the hands are on the smaller side, almost dainty, I can say "she's" a beauty and know that she is a she. If you know what I mean. But seriously, Mark my words, this is the 1.

I mean they are called the watchmaker of watchmakers for a reason... let’s be real here, between an explorer one 36mm ( which I love a lot and I would buy ) from 1992 and a spring drive brand new, there is no reason to hesitate if it’s not because of your taste or marketing.

      Ton Pac I said they were comparable to JLC in mission and niche. They are no where near JLC in heritage and respect.
      Also, JLC and Rolex aren’t in the same stratosphere either and serve different purposes. Rolex is the king of mass produced timepieces. Omega is more comparable (and possibly winning with their new movements). JLC, in their higher end pieces, are at the top of the horological world. Grand Seiko (nor Rolex) can remotely compare to that. GS doesn’t make highly complicated movements/timepieces.
      When I compared GS to JLC, I was only talking about JLC entry level pieces. Where the finish is good on the movement, but not superbly detailed like their higher end pieces.

    I think it depends on whether enough of them were made. If there are a lot of MK1s out there, there will be people that buy them because they are quirky but not enough for them to be expensive and coveted. On the other hand, if Rolex made few of them, those people who want a quirky watch will still want one, but supply will be limited, so prices will go up. I think it's the first.

    It doesn’t seem like it is that rare for a Rolex. And they were available during a time where you could just walk into a Rolex AD and buy it out of the case. Not like now. If it becomes collectible it won’t happen for many, many years.

    Unlike the Tudor Black Bay Black Rose (ETA version BB) which also had a short production run, not much of an argument can be made that is a better-looking version or has more sought after features than the Explorer 1, Mark II.
