My take on Explorer is that it's a great choice for someone who wants just one watch to own and wear for the next 30 years, but for most watch enthusiasts with multiple watches in their collection, it's just too plan and boring and it will never get worn. Great content as always. ❤
@@etebolSome plain watches, this included, can look exquisite because of the simple but perfect proportions & design. There’s a reason they so incredibly popular. Not for everyone obviously, but for that we have air.
Plain and boring is a good thing. I don’t want to flash all the time. I have other watches for that and as a collector history, movement and complications are a part of it. The Explorer has so much to offer just not to the naked eye. I will say the 36mm can be worn for just about any occasion.
This is probably my favorite Rolex model. It's stylish, understated and classic. It says that the wearer appreciates style without the need to flex or be a poseur. The 114270 is a hell of a bargain and the 36mm size works for a range of wrist sizes. Great video. Loved the comparison to the newer model.
@@JohnSmith-ef8nr It’s a good watch, but you wouldn’t catch me dead wearing it with a suit and it’s not made to be worn while swimming either, hence why I see the Explorer having the edge in the “go anywhere, do anything” category. My wrist is 7.25”-7.75” depending on the temperature and I wear an OP 36mm with the blue 369 dial. I’ve been collecting over 20 years and am leaning more towards smaller watches as I get older. I don’t understand people that need a dinner plate on their wrists to feel “masculine.”
I don't understand the childish "dinner plate" comments where the 36mm EX1 is now clearly targeted at females with its true size being nearer 35mm and the dainty bracelet that tapers to 14mm. Rolex released the larger 40mm - which is actually 38mm - because the 36mm wasn't selling. They are masters at marketing and sales. Get yourself a 224270; a little larger but similar proportions to this old Explorer. Part of the odd look of your 39mm comes from how large the head of the watch is in relation to the 20mm bracelet and little button crown. The new 40 looks proportionate with the wider stance 21mm bracelet.

If this was priced around £4k then great - I totally get the charm of a circa 90’s Rolex but for the same money you can get the latest 36mm which is technically far superior in every way. The margin on the grey market for these now is next to nothing. They aren’t going for much at all above list if you shop around.

Blah blah blah Rolex, blah blah blah reference. Every second watch TH-cam video. Seen and avoided countless times.
@ohbennyboy I’d love to see this book
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR I'm glad that you reviewed this...I just picked up my 224270 - my first Rolex - last Friday after a 17 day wait iirc...your positive explorer review definitely influenced my (meaning my wife's) decision making. I wore it all weekend as my frogman gave me cheeky looks everytime I passed the watch box.
I’m really close to saving up for this watch it’s crazy to see this video pop up hopefully its a sign I will eventually get it
Updated so I ended up getting the 2022 reference and I’m really happy and blessed to have it
@@Workshop322 Go for it, old man. 😂
I'm supposed to graduate with an engineering degree in a couple years. I have been thinking about getting a watch to mark the occasion and I think I have made up my mind. I've always wanted an Explorer so I think I'll try to seek out a 2001 made 14270. 2001 being my birth year aswell it would also mark my 25th birthday :)
If this was priced around £4k then great - I totally get the charm of a circa 90’s Rolex but for the same money you can get the latest 36mm which is technically far superior in every way. The margin on the grey market for these now is next to nothing. They aren’t going for much at all above list if you shop around.
I bought the Baltany. It’s great
I bought the new 224270…. It’s absolutely perfect.
100%! It was the only Rolex I wanted other than a Sub, but then the latter is common and tedious, while the EX1 has something more refined about it. Purchased it as a walk-in at a Rolex AD in Macau. Wear it all the time, it's a beautiful watch! Felt the 36mm, which is nearer 35mm, was too dainty and feminine, even on my small/medium sized wrist.
I love the 36mm explorer....i have only good things to say about them
214270 for me. That’s my favorite Explorer.
Although I hate what Rolex stands for I am here because of you mad watch 😊
Man!!! I really love that watch!
is it an empty box?
Keep the 39mm!! I love mine.
Just get the Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra
Nah, need a date. Bought the Explorer 2 instead.
When I become an old man, a very, very old man, I might, just might get a Rolex............ oh, I recently turned 70..............................
how about for us men that don't have chicken bone wrists, 8.5" wrist here and having a hard time finding a watch that doesn't look like a womans watch, a giant G-shock gwg-b1000 is taking up real estate now and it looks about right
Scottbroy!!! Your mindset is totally wrong . The watch you wear on your wrist is yours! You! No one is judging your size of a watch on your wrist my friend. Back in the 60’s there was no GShocks and a thousands of men around the world with 8.5 inch wrists!!! Did they call their watch womens watches????? No why???? It’s programming! Youve been programmed to feel this way!!! Snap out of it son and be proud of of a 36mm watch!!!;)
The wife is the voice of sanity as always😂
Another Rolex video, that too an explorer.
Is this a sign for me to buy an explorer? lol
I replaced the Explorer with the new silver ion limited edition dark teal Accurist Origin
What do you mean, keep vintage in a safe and just look at it Russ 🤷♂️
You know I only wear vintage now and haven’t had any problems at all.
Obviously I wear my Seiko Arnie to work though 😂😂😂
Yeah you’re an old geezer now who doesn’t move about much anymore Simon!!;) your watches are fine hahahahahaha
Bloody cheek 😂😂😂
36mm supremacy. Love my 124270.
Explorer 39mm ❤
GW6900NASA24-1 can you review this
No worries, time will make you an old man damn soon 😁⏳️
Enjoy your old man's watch today!!
Sell it and get the 40mm. Much better w the anti reflective coat. Better proportioned bracelet too
Concur. I own the 40mm. Perfect Rolex.
My 214270 looks smaller on my wrist than the 36 looks on yours. You just have the smaller wrist not built for modern larger watches
They’re all around 5-6k now
Watching this in 2001. It's only $2250.
I’d rather buy a house in 2001 !!!
Don't buy this watch guys. This is the most boring thing. I lost interest in watch collecting since I got it it's just perfect
;)
tudor black bay at 50% below retail .
The Explorer is hella beautiful
You need to lay off the Bolivian marching powder mate! Lol
Weird timing I just got mine like 2 weeks ago
You happy?
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR Very happy, I enjoy quite luxury and so far nobody noticed it being a Rolex. My speedmaster attracts a lot more attention
You do know that you can sell something and retain the memories? People do it all the time with houses and cars
I don’t think that sensibly
Was this guy in The Hobbit?
Goat watch
