    This watch is superb, whoever says the handles are too short has not seen it in person, they are the perfect size to “merge” with the white gold numbers, incredible. Now the Mk2 does the opposite and covers them. It is just perfect!

    Opposed to what most people think, the watch worn by Sir Edmund Hillary during the ascent was not a Rolex but a Smiths watch. Sherpa Tenzing Norgay was indeed wearing a Rolex watch at the time he reached the summit -a gold bubble-back ref. 6305 given to him by Swiss climber Raymond Lambert.

      A good summary. I'm not a fan of the new version, so the mk1 is one of my favourite watches of all time

    Just bought this watch yesterday, I love it! After trying on many different models and variations of Rolex watches, this one stood out for me.

    Might be the cleanest dial of all the Rolexes. Personally prefer nonluminescent numbers bc it goes better with the matt dial.

    Nice watch, I agree the hour hand could be slightly longer.

      +Bob FromBrisbane Yeah it's just mm from perfection but still absolutely fine.

      It’s a shorty.... so the hands are from the previous model.... the Mark II has longer and thicker maxi hands so if much better as well as lumped 3, 6 and 9

    I have one of these and it's person lay my favourite Rolex. understated and less ubiquitous than the ever present submariner, more sporty that the day date, and less bling than the Daytona.

      I totally agree. Lovely and understated.

    Nice effort and a comfortable voice and review, however the bracelet on 214270 explorer is different to 116710 GMT (has a centre polished link) I believe.

    • @WatchHobbyist
      @WatchHobbyist  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +TF Caravan thanks, no I thought I mentioned same bracelet other than the PCLs? Anyway, identical but the explorer is totally brushed, so will show less wear. Really fantastic watch.

    A stunning watch... I debated between this and the 114300. Opted for the 14300 as I fell in love with the modern styling and dynamic dial! Can i contact you about how much you'd like for this? Twitter perhaps?!

      So true and it's ironic that the modern oyster perpetual 36 ref. 116000 is actually much more in line with what the original explorer was all about. I wish they would make it 36mm again.

    I like the Explorer between the two, in fact I bought one the late 2015. Now they changed it and you know I'm not happy but, I will not sell it to get the updated model. Do love the lume of the 2016 model.

    Great review - I am actually getting this watch at the end of the week so your review has helped me mull over the craving a little. I´ve been through almost the entire Rolex sports watch segment in my time, but I am looking very much forward to this, as I like the simplistic yet tough look of it.
    A couple of things though I would like to comment on your review - the 3-6-9 are in fact white gold. And the sapphire crystal has no reflective coating what so ever - but with the matte dial, reflections are not so much of a problem ............... and if the light is wrong I guess you just turn your wrist slightly.
    I´ve had the easylink bracelet on the Explorer II before, and it is just the perfect thing, when it is a hot day or you have been working out in some way - or maybe even at night when my wrists tend to expand a little (yes I do sleep with my watch on).

      +Paul Talbot You really couldn't go wrong with either, but the Explorer is a stunning watch, a lot less money, and seems to hold it's overall value better than any other Rolex this side of a D-Blue.

    • @WatchHobbyist
      @WatchHobbyist  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, I really wasn't a fan when I tried it out, but perhaps this will change over time. The Mk1 214270 as I guess it is now was more than perfect to my eye.

    • @closer71
      @closer71 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Freddie d'Alquen Yeah, I loved this watch but the short hands really bothered me so I got a 116710 GMT Master II instead. Now that they’ve replaced the hands on the 214270 Explorer so that it looks right, I’m buying one this fall.

  • @NoxiousButtSpray
    @NoxiousButtSpray 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    i prefer the 39mm oyster perpetual -- same movement, prettier dial, hands are properly proportioned (the hands are too short on this explorer)

    • @WatchHobbyist
      @WatchHobbyist  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +NoxiousButtSpray The new watch is really nice, I agree, but the lack of easy link and the strangely coloured dials don't appeal to me anywhere as much.

    I don’t understand you guys who buy a watch and are never sure if you’re going to keep it or flip it. What’s the point? Buy what you like by all means but wear the bloody thing,take the stickers off and get to know the piece on a personal level instead philosophical one. Too nice to keep it in the box,it’s a wonderful watch

    • @WatchHobbyist
