    Thanks to you I scored a maringa , 2 lowquats , a fig , 2 Mexican papaya , and a Mexican sunflower today! I informed the woman I bought it from about the mex sun flower for fertilizer. She said she had no idea but the only reason she grew so much was that her chickens love and thrive on it. You've inspired me. Can't wait to your your farm one day. Thanks again for all the info!

    Here in south central Alabama, I'm growing a little over 50 moringa trees. Some are growing in poor soil in holes with maybe a quart of high quality potting mix. Some are growing in poor soil with no potting mix at all. Maybe 6 or so are growing in 18 gallon tubs with very high quality soil roughly a foot and a half deep and with a six inch reservoir for water-logged leaf mulch/wood in the bottom.
    Not surprisingly the ones in the tubs are doing the best. The tallest one in a tub grew from seed to about 6 to 7 feet tall from March to September. About half of the rest in the tubs grew almost as tall. There are some shorter ones in the tubs that were transplanted later.
    Of those planted in the ground, the very best one was planted without any soil amendments at all. It's almost 6 feet tall. The shortest ones are about a foot tall. I'm hoping they'll establish roots this year sufficient to let them grow fast next spring.
    Oddly, one of the trees that is in the soil with about a quart of potting mix in poor soil has put on flowers. This is on a 4 to 5 foot tall tree. I doubt the flowers will make any pods of any size before cold weather comes.
    I have used compost/manure teas on all of them. I experimented with chemical fertilizer on a few, including the tallest one planted in un-amended soil.
    I'm not harvesting many of the leaves because I want to encourage the trees to get as strong as they can so their roots can survive the winter (with heavy mulching).

    Great video! Concise and full of information. Until we get our own video made, I will share this video with our moringa customers. We grow moringa (also the pkm1) in the high desert of se Arizona. I tell everyone to think of it as an annual that might come back with the right care. Getting ready to start our seedlings in the next couple weeks.
    I may have to rethink our pricing, we've been trying to stay competitive with what people can purchase online, but there is a lot of work involved!

Best of luck to you all in AZ.

      @c.j.rogers2422 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know it's been a long time since you posted your question, but the answer is definitely YES! They take to coppicing extremely well. As long as the stump and roots don't endure a hard freeze, you can't hardly kill it by cutting it down. It WILL come back!

  • @voodookitchenmama
    @voodookitchenmama 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm in 9b. Lost my moringas in a hard freeze a few years ago. They were however in pots, so that might have been the problem. I know they have a really long tap root that must be allowed for. I'm trying again only this time planting directly in the ground. Great videos, short, to the point and very educational!

    • @PeteKanarisGreenDreamsFL
      @PeteKanarisGreenDreamsFL  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This guy is dead on point about this amazing 'tree'. Sure, there's a 'learning curve' about how to be successful in whatever area YOU grow in, but it CAN be grown just about anywhere South of Vegas IF you remember it is a tropical plant and plan accordingly. I grow several different varieties here in N/W Az and have found that they do well IF properly 'environmented'.

    Thanks for the info! How big of a pot would these grow well in and it which potting soil combo ( perlite organic compost )? Also for the weekly harvesting to 3-4’ tall plants 1’ apart approach would these be able to be grown near a house or are the roots the type that uplifts foundations? Thanks

    • @PeteKanarisGreenDreamsFL
      @PeteKanarisGreenDreamsFL  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      L O F E N O I A L O F hello! Moringa has a large tap root so a deep pot is necessary. They also like very well drained soils, I'd suggest the perlite. I've never planted them near a foundation or found the roots to be very invasive.

      Hey Micheal, yes it can be grown as an annual. I would replant the tree yearly due to the serious tap root the tree has. If you want to try it in a pot I would suggest one that is very deep and narrow.

    • @ThePlantBasedHomestead
      @ThePlantBasedHomestead 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hahaha, glad you spoke up! I was checking to see if it could be grown here. I've seen that either you grow it every year or you have an established greenhouse you can overwinter them in when they're in pots. I'm thinking of buying seeds are you?
      Pete, when will your new seed lots come or should we just buy the tree's. How quick will they grow here in NY? Enough to get some growth? I'd dry the leaves and powder them for the winter then start back again the following year.

    Love what you are doing, Pete. Fellow permaculturist out of Louisiana.. just finished my PDC and trying to figure out how to make a living at permaculture. I currently get by as a residential maintenance gardener and am trying to build a reputation, but trying to move more into the design and installation of permaculture systems eventually. Anyway I was really inspired by Justin Rhodes videos of you and your place. I'm studying the landscaping industry and plan to take some more courses to become a licensed landscape horticulturist this year so I can legally do design/grow and sell nursery stock. The only hurdle is my financial situation and I was wondering how you got to where you are with your business.. If you have any tips it would be great.. maybe you could make a video "how I started my permaculture landscape business" lol! Did you start off doing lawns and just work your way up? Did you have to take out business loans? Things like that... I know that's a lot to ask but I am really trying to learn the ropes.. thought I would get my PDC and just start doing it, but issues began to arise like liability insurance, workers comp insurance, licensing, etc... all I can technically legally do without proper permits and licensing for now is cut lawns and weed beds I think. I know Florida law is probably different but I was just interested in your experience with starting a business. Thanks so much for making your videos and contributing to the improvement of the environment through your work. 🌱

      Remember, these are a 'tropical' plant. HEAVY mulch and shade cloth them a bit during the hottest months. Humidity is the key. In winter, cover at first danger of frost. Even if they do get frost burned, once they get established, they'll spring right back when the air and soil temps warm up. Well worth the effort.

      Tammy Tenison you can grow this variety, Moringa oleifera, as an annual. You could have even better luck by starting it indoors in a sunny location a few weeks before the end of frost threat. Keep in mind that has a deep taproot, so the deeper the pots the better.

    Hi Pete, me again (South Africa),
    Do you think this tree will grow in the Dry Arid regions of South Africa? - The climate that you get just b"before you get desert" - Winter frosts and sometimes what we call "black ripe" that kills plants into almost the roots - even if they were covered with frost cloth. Only sometimes. Winter Min & Max temperatures ranges between -6˚C to 22˚C (21˚F to 71˚F) and Summers are in the region of 10˚C at night (and more) up to as high as 45˚C in day time. (50˚F to 113˚F) - Average Max is usually about 91˚F in summer.
    Rainfall in normal years sit around 300-400mm per year. We had a drought now and it sat around 200mm per year. This is dry and hot place.

Seems like an uphill battle trying to overcome the stigma being of a 'snake oil' salesman. I've run up against 'stone walls' trying to get different varieties. Also, getting my homestead 'certified organic' is a real BEEOTCH. IF we could get a TENTH of the planet to grow this, hunger would go away.

      We'll have to learn how to selectively breed/clone from parents that have adapted to different growing conditions. 40 bucks a pound 'wholesale' to health food/ nutrition outlets is MY 'norm'. LOTS of labor gets put into 40 dried lbs but, 1600 bucks a week ain't hay. 'Farmers market' sales barely make a profit.

      Yeah thats work! I have many friends that dry and powder it for resale. When we first started the GreenDreams in 2011 moringa was the main tree I grew and sold, I really thought that market would have been tapped by now. Are you replanting yearly?

    • @PeteKanarisGreenDreamsFL
      @PeteKanarisGreenDreamsFL  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cynthia Richards - this is not typically a tree we would suggest for potted Applications, because it's quick growing & deep taproot. If a container is your only option, may I suggest using a very deep pot so the tree does not become rebound quickly.

    Given its incredible growth rate, how does the Moringa do regarding soil nutrient depletion? Will it compete for nutrients against other competing plants?

    • @PeteKanarisGreenDreamsFL
      @PeteKanarisGreenDreamsFL  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Shane! Moringa is a super tough tree that grow in the worst of conditions. It thrives in our sandy dry soils here in Florida. I've haven't noticed any trees or plants around Moringa looking stressed from lack of nutrients.

  • @timrose5783

    They are not cold tolerant and will die if the tree roots are not protected. I grow Moringa and each year I cover up the roots to keep them from freezing. I lost my trees 4 years ago because I did not know that. You also can kill them if the roots stay to wet the roots will rot. They like full sun and they are a tropical plant. Keep that in mind if your going to grow them. They are drought tolerant and do not require a lot of water.

    Hey Pete, I just had to comment on the title. It shows as Moringa the most nutritions terrestrial plant. (I didn't see "in the world" but I think that's redundant with terrestrial). So I just wanted to ask, are you familiar with a lot of extra-terrestrial plants, or what?

    • @c.j.rogers2422

      Terrestrial, land-based, as opposed to aquatic or marine, like algae.

      Well drained soil. Sunny location. Watering the ground only & not the leaves for the first stages until it's established. You can always cut it back & baby it if it looks like it won't make it. Also, make sure that you aren't planting it too deep - it's better to plant it too high then too deep & make sure that it's packed in tight with soil (there should be no give when you step on the surface around it. Make sure not to mulch directly up against the trunk. Also, if it's root bound in the pot, your chances of success will be stunted. These are all pretty general rules for any tree. Maybe 4th time is a charm?

      Tracy Bruring - yes this tree will produce seeds in abundance, in the right climate. If you were interested in harvesting seeds, I would not suggest hard pruning/compassing this tree.
