Southeast Asian here. This is an extremely important plant for women in our culture. It’s a medicinal herb we use during postpartum recovery. Balances your blood, cleans out your uterus, removes dead blood. Faster postpartum recovery. We throw this in a pot of boiled chicken. Add salt. Eat this dish all meals for 30 days and your body will bounce back to your pre pregnancy weight. I did this for both of my kids.
When I was at your tour with Justin and family you showed us this, and picked it threw it down so I picked it up. After four days in the hot car trampled by three dogs I found it and put it in water behold it perked back up and is alive. This plant is indestructible thanks again
It's also great for high blood pressure! I bought some stems with leaves years ago and now it's growing all over my living room. I love the taste and usually put the leaves raw in my morning smoothie. It propagates real easily. It doesn't seem to like direct sunlight so I'm repotting some of it and making room for more herbs.
Permaculture Homestead - One of our favorites too (if I didn't already mention that!) we use it more than any other green & just keep popping more cuttings in the ground every time we harvest!
In Tampa, FL, you're right. It grows like a weed and is very easy to propagate. I harvest mine once a week and make sure that I eat my share. But I cook them. I also make a pesto sauce out of them. It's awesome.
I don’t like it raw but I like it sautéed. My favorite way to have it is sautéed with tomatoes, garlic and mushrooms. Great with eggs or chicken or fish.
Me thinks I live in the wrong state!! LOL One fall we were cleaning up the garden to put it to bed and I pulled out some spinach plants that had gone to seed and then I walked across the garden to put them in the wheelbarrow, the next spring I had a row of spinach exactly where I had walked back to the wheelbarrow. I've had tomato seed do the same, both happened in mild winters.. don't know if that would happen with the 3 feet of snow we had this last winter though! Blessings!
1994abbygirl - All these delicious veggies & fruits WANT to be here for us! I wouldn't want to live through snowy winters (I quite like the heat), but sometimes I'm jealous of the things I can't grow, such as (market/grocers) spinach. It wouldn't even make it 2 weeks here without bolting. Our winters are rarely cold for more than a few days.
I have mine in with the coleus that's also edible. Makes for nice color contrast. I boiled it up today for the first time and I like it better than regular spinach. I took the stalks and stuck them back in the ground.
Longevity Spinach (and the similar Okinawan Spinach, which I think is slightly more peppery to us) are probably among my favorite crops. Put it fresh in smoothies & cook it up as you do. Nice video.
:) Mine is growing like a weed but seemed to take a bit longer (than Longevity) to initially establish...I have it in a raised bed with close to 1/3 native soil...However, in a pot, got cuttings to root even quicker than longevity for some reason...
Jeff I should give it another try. It really does make a beautiful ground cover. My biggest problem here has been the squirrels love it! Last time we started a bunch in the nursery they were all eaten.
Hey--a couple top longtime Tropical Nurseries here in Metropolitan Phx may want to obtains some red jaboticaba's from your wholesale friend :) I sent them to your youtube here perhaps to gather some add'l information :)

MY FATHER HAD HEART ENLARGED MENT, HE DRINKS 2 GLASS OF BOILED ASHITABA OR LONGGIVITY SPINACH IN 2 WEEKS AND BECOME NORMAL
that;s another variety of spinach only now i seen that, thanks for sharing i love natural and fresh vege.
Where would you recommend it be planted in the yard to be part of the landscape as a perennial?
Looks good, tastes good and by heck it does you good. Wish I could grow it here. Thank you for sharing.
mrsgbee - eventually I hope to share something that might grow near you!
This plant will grow in a glass of water. In your house. On your roof. In a bug infested back yard.

I grow it in my Garden and consume it raw almost everyday. It controla my blood sugar. Greetings from Jakarta Indonesia

Jeff thank you! We've never had great luck with the Okinawa Spinach here, the longevity in much more vigorous on my property.
