The main reason we originally planted the bamboo was a wind break for our market garden. Bamboo does a great job of filtering the wind and not just stopping it. I forgot to mention that part in the video:)
Hello Pete and thanks for your videos. What do you mean by filtering the wind? I want to install a wind barrier on a market garden here in southeast Spain (with root barrier). Greatly appreciatted any comments about this.
Carlos Pons the bamboo slows and gently lets the wind travel through, a strong wind break or wall would cause the air to travel over and crash. Im going to do a second video on bamboo, I missed a few things. Good luck and I hope this helps.
Pete Kanaris GreenDreamsFL I’ve never thought about Bamboo... we had about a hundred trees down after the hurricane. The center of the eye came down our street. I wonder how well of a wind barrier it would be for a hurricane or tropical storm? Thanks for the great info! I’m loving this channel!
Hey man I appreciate all of your videos! Your farm looks awesome! I used to live in Pasco county in Dade City and surrounding area. I live in Costa Rica now and am a natural builder specializing in bamboo. Wanted to mention that you should preferably always cut bamboo on the menguante (waning moon) after the full moon. The sugar content in the combs is at its lowest at this moon phase and also recommend cutting before daybreak as well. "This is a controversial topic, and many scientists still argue over the truth behind this "peasant knowledge". However detailed studies in Colombia show remarkable differences with untreated bamboo, when harvested at specific hours and moon phases. The starch content is lowest between waning gibbous and last quarter (between the 6th and 8th day after full moon) due to the higher gravitation of the moon. On the basis of photosynthesis, in the course of the morning, bamboo starts transporting starch from the roots into the leaves. During the height of the day this process is at its peak making this the least ideal time of day to harvest. Therefore the best time to harvest bamboo, is before sunrise (between 12pm and 6am), when most of the starch is still in the roots. Bamboo harvested in this manner has 3 advantages: they are less attractive to insects, are less heavy to transport and will dry faster." Post harvest Transpiration Starch content in bamboo can also be reduced by keeping felled culms upright with the branches and leaves attached for approximately 4 weeks. They can lean against another bamboo "tree" and remain at the plantation, but make sure the felled culm does not have direct contact with the soil. During this period, the stored food materials are utilized and, thus, the starch content in bamboo is lowered. This method also improves the drying process of the bamboo culm and results in a nice uniform color of the dried culm.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I've had some Nastus Elatus (New Guinea highland raw edible clumping bamboo) in our garden (alluvial sand) for about 7 years. It has done very well in all the things you mention, particularly fast development to full size culms, edible shoots, sound shielding and soundscape. The neighbours are happy too. One thing I notice is that few gardens or lawns will survive around it and your comments on this were very salient/useful; clumping bamboo does not colonise new areas but, like any tall plant, it needs to spread its roots wide and clumping bamboo isn't shy about doing this - a great plant for preventing erosion. This is the first time I've heard report of this from a nursery source. It's is important for all people buying clumping bamboo for a suburban garden to take your advice and use root barriers to prevent nearby lawns and gardens from root take over. (NB: I've noticed that palm trees do much the same thing - that's an exhausting story for another time!). What do you think of this: The word here (sub-tropical Gold Coast Australia) is that horse manure suits bamboo well. It is said that the mineral content NPK suits them well. Anecdotally, I have had tremendous results by using horse manure from the local horse agistment. If you take a Sunday drive through horse country you might find bags of horse poo for $5 by the roadside, or if you have more than one bamboo clump, you can often make an arrangement with an agistment to bring a trailer and shovel horse manure onto the trailer and away for free.
Thomas Edison studied bamboo to replace steel rebar in concrete - He found it stronger and build his swimming pool with it here in Fort Myers Florida. I've seen bamboo at Biltmore Estate in North Carolina - must have been another kind bamboo for that colder climate. Thank you = I didn't about the sound qualities and that the roots travel some distance.
I'm having a hell of a hard time making vertical gardening structures because I work alone and, am on a temperature build budget restraint. I'm thinking that Bamboo can serve as a living trellis for Clematis, Passion fruit, Cape Coral Honeysuckle and so forth, maybe even Queen's wreath. Advice? Good idea for some? Bad idea for all?
Thnx Pete, my Dad lived by the farmers almanac, always paid attention to it when cutting our calves and hogs. I didn't realize it made such a difference with cutting wood or bamboo. I was wondering why my bamboo poles and stakes were rotting so easily.
So, if I do cut green bamboo sticks and stick them in soil by raining season, will they grow? Do they going to give shoots or come up leaves from stick? I want live fence just not that way as they show there, do it's possible to make plated fence from them?
Back a few years I used to chop and hang my bamboo in my greenhouse. It would dry pretty straight. It lasts for many years but I could not find how to apply a stain or oil, maybe teak oil. I also played around with bending it over the fire of a hibachi. Cool stuff.
Nice...love Eric Toensmeier...his new Carbon Farming bk is fantastic, though only a little ways thru it & jump around (pretty thick text)...great video...
:) Knows his stuff. Glad I also invested early on in Paradise Lot...it is a quirky bk, but still love what they did initially on only a 1/10 of an acre. Also, the subsequent Geoff Lawton video...
wow, amazing video, I just know that by now, that harvesting time is when it's new moon or full moon. Pete I want to plant the bamboo near the river but I dont know what should I plant the baby bamboo or the one that use as vegetables.
Would love to try some on my Alabama 8b zone. Let me know which variety to try and will purchase some and try it. We usually have a lot of rain so don't think that will be a problem. I was always afraid of it because there is a bunch of it growing as one comes into Selma which has taken over the swamp areas.
Oldesouth Farm yeah sadly bamboo has gotten a bad rap because of running varieties. Funny thing most running varieties are better fodder for animals, so planted properly ( fodder banks) in pastures the animals could keep it maintained. Our main wind break is "sea breeze" ( bambusa malingensis) it will take down to 12 degrees, at lower temps it will defoliate but should recover. Unfortunately most of the clumping varieties aren't as cold hardy as the running types.
Will the large clumping bamboo make a good root barrier to keep out the China wax trees(I think that's what they are called). They are super invasive and covering the property behind mine. I've had to root rip my back garden 2× and was getting roots out as thick as your calf. They've smothered out most of the pines and all other species except the wild rose and privet at the edge of my property. I live in zone 8b-9a. South Alabama next to Pensacola. What kind of bamboo would you try. My yard is south facing so they would be planted on the north side of these hated trees to block them from taking over my yard
Hi Pete. I love your videos - so much info, so profound and yet in a short "a point" way. Great! thank you for it. Could you put the names and especially the latin names of the species in the description? that would help me to find out where I could get them (here in Portugal) keep making these videos! love
Randy Ordaz thank you! This clump is 2 1/2-3yrs old and is called bambusa oldhamii. It's one of my favorite clumps here and the canes can hit 45ft tall.
Joshua Reynolds I've been using galvanized roofing panels. They are 2ft wide and different lengths. The roots seem to be in the top 6-12 inches. It will be interesting to see how long it holds up.
R Riddle they make specific types just for this application, we used galvanized roof panels 12in deep. The roots are surprisingly shallow no deeper than 10in.
@@PeteKanarisGreenDreamsFL hello, i know this is 2yrs too late for a follow up question: How far away would u place the steel AROUND the bamboo when you plant it?
Nature's Cadence Farm I learned about it during my first PDC, my instructor was big on moon phase. I've also read about it in a few articles now, unfortunately I can't recommend any books. I would look into Biodynamic gardening.
