Totally makes sense as to why my poor bananas just all died with this last cold front we got hit with here in New Port Richey. Mine are too exposed, out in the open. Great video on bananas! Thank you!
What an interesting video! I love anything about microclimates! We need them in Texas now that we are having these winter storms! I admire you for your excellent videos. Thank you for teaching us so much!
Wow I had no idea bananas were so interesting! When you were explaining about them on Justin's tour all I remember is how delicious they were and so many varieties. I love your blogs they are so informative thanks for sharing I really appreciate it all!
Hello Peter I met you at Joe's store in Micanopy at the skill share event. I love your videos. you mentioned that 50 varieties was a bit much and that you would like to focus on your top 12. What are your top 12? Thank-you.
Ragu Z hey buddy! Glad to hear your enjoying the videos. Ok top ten bananas and just so you know I haven't fruited all 50 types yet to actually judge. I'm bias for flavor but mostly growth habits and productivity. 1) dwarf Nam wah 2) Thai 3) Mysore 4) Raja puri 5) Nam wah 6) Ice cream 7) FHIA 3640 8) pisang Ceylon 9) Orinoco 10) apple
Interesting you have frost that late in the season....what are your normal/record high's ? Love the effect of purposeful micro-climates...not only to mitigate temp swings, but to also offer wind-breaks from cold winds...Interestingly, they talk about the high level of potassium in banana's...and they do have a good amount...but there are other fruits or vegetables with higher levels...love this 30 day challenge of yours :)
Our all-time mid-Phx high is 122 recorded in the latter half of June...but we regularly hit 114 or above in "most" yrs at least once. Happy not to have your humidity, of course. Those highs can be devastating, of course, but as a top notch grower, you know it is the lows that can be even more dangerous...not only in winter, but if plants can get an occasional break from summer heat and don't burn in direct sun, they can often survive....was just curious. I am a zone 9B also I believe, but don't get that cold that late in season (as apparently you do there). Great video's Pete !
We have a very small strip of our three acre farm that is a small little forest. I wonder if a banana tree would survive there. I live in the foothills of North Carolina in Cleveland County. I think I will try and plant one and see how she does! Thanks for talking about the forest issue. I never thought about putting anything into my little forest. Where do you get most of your trees and plants from? You have all kinds of exotic fruits and plants and trees, but where do you source yours when you want to plant something? I LOVE LOVE Your Channel! You Are The Bomb!
I live in Ocala on 3 acres and would love to plant bananas, and I have a good understory location however I always thought they needed full sun to fruit. How dense is your shade in your banana location?
It’s dappled light. Production would be less than compared to full sun but bananas are a jungle species. They evolved in the understory and grow and look well. My many friends north of you in the Gainsville area doing great with bananas.
4 banana plants at once? Thought from other videos say keep maybe 1 or 2 because more than that will take away nutrition from the tallest...any advice on that?
Think I saw an edit in there. Lol. Bananas are something we would like to do quite a few of on the property. How are they smell wise if you don't harvest them.
Hey Pete, planted a bunch of banana plants in a section of my yard to try and create a bit of a canopy. What would recommend companion planting with bananas?
Just bought some banana trees so this is very helpful. I didn't really understand the cutting back for freezes thing. Do you mean cut all 4 trees back to the ground? How do you get fruit from a tree that's gone through that? Is this just for extremely hard freezes?
Yes I meant in a extreme freeze situations. I'm that case you would be loosing all the bananas anyways, so by cutting them down to the ground they aren't stunted by the freeze and recover faster. A healthy banana mat can set fruit in 6 months.
After watching this I moved all my plants next to the house. I plant in pots because of terrible soil and gophers. My Lakatan banana is only 3'4" pstem so I moved it to the warmest spot surrounded by potted citrus. Hopefully it doesn't get too cold here in 9B this year.
Do you have any dwarf varieties? We have 2 banana sections going already, but would love to add different varieties. We also have a truly tiny and I can't wait for it to produce! :)
We have very few overstory trees on our property in Central Florida. Things get fried by the sun - bananas, chaya, papaya, etc. Only loquats have survived the onslaught. Have you tried adding trees in areas that are open fields and if so what trees have you tried? Just planting oaks or maybe legumes like Tipu or Elephant Ear Tree?
Mountain Tranquility yes I would definitely look at large nitrogen fixing trees like Mimosa, leucaena and my favorite Enterolobium. In the short term plant Mexican sunflower and pigeon pea to protect them.
Amazing video! Please do the series on micro climates, please! Love your pro tips! Even though I can't grow bananas in Northern Germany, I wonder what our "50 varieties of w h a t e v e r " here might be... 🍏🌳🇩🇪😉🐶 Lars from PeKK Permaculture Kirchhorst, Zone 7b
I live in coastal Oregon 9b, same zone as you Pete. My problem is the summers are cooler then yours and I am told the reason we have no tropicals around here is we need more summer heat. Can you recommend varieties that need less degree days,?
blackshadowPrime yes I make money selling the pups off of different clumps. The farm is still young and immature so once the bananas start producing beyond eating capacity we will be selling fruit :)
I love how all of your trees are your favorite, depending on which one your talking about lol 😁 Great video, as always.
Kinda like kids…or pets…all favorites👍🏻Love your content. Stay warm.
Totally makes sense as to why my poor bananas just all died with this last cold front we got hit with here in New Port Richey. Mine are too exposed, out in the open. Great video on bananas! Thank you!
I am the banana man... many varieties I have ... I'm in the Tampa Bay area.
Thanks for all the detailed information. Keep em coming my friend!!
What an interesting video! I love anything about microclimates! We need them in Texas now that we are having these winter storms! I admire you for your excellent videos. Thank you for teaching us so much!
Your plants are beautiful, I love your videos man!!! Much love from Turlock, CA!
Glad you like them! 💚
I love banana trees.
I have two varieties here 7 miles east of Naples, FL, and I plan on eventually maybe getting 1 or two more varieties.
Wow I had no idea bananas were so interesting! When you were explaining about them on Justin's tour all I remember is how delicious they were and so many varieties. I love your blogs they are so informative thanks for sharing I really appreciate it all!
Becca Becca thanks for all your support!

Came here to ask the same.

1) dwarf Nam wah

8) pisang Ceylon
9) Orinoco
10) apple
Pete Kanaris GreenDreamsFL Thank you very much!!! :)
Fantastic!!!! Thank-you!!!
Love the pro tips!
NIcaeaacademy thanks! More coming I promise.
Ty ❣️ this was the most informative video about care of bananas 🍌 straight to the point
So glad it was helpful! 🍌
How do you know so much about the minutiae of growing!! As always thanks for the post. I will continue to tell people about you.
I'm like a sponge that's always sucking it in! 😬
Matthew Race I'll be posting a video with one of my game changing pro tips tomorrow.

Jeff good question I've never really recorded the highs, I'd say mid summer 96-99* degrees with 100% humidity.
Our all-time mid-Phx high is 122 recorded in the latter half of June...but we regularly hit 114 or above in "most" yrs at least once. Happy not to have your humidity, of course. Pete Kanaris GreenDreamsFL thanks Pete!
I use bags of leaves I've collected by the side of the road from the neighbors to mulch the bananas.
d hamby that's always been a favorite for me. Gotta love the free bagged leaves 👍
How can you tell what species the banana is?
4 banana plants at once? Thought from other videos say keep maybe 1 or 2 because more than that will take away nutrition from the tallest...any advice on that?
Does removing the small pups stun the growth of the mother plant?
It really depends how you receive them. It can slow them down when dug up.
Found the seeds here in New Zealand. can't wait to grow them
pereti wallace wow! Banana seeds ?
Pete Kanaris GreenDreamsFL
Oleifera seeds that is.
last time I saw banana seeds(super small tiny elongated) was 1975 at a Chinese vegetables market
Please do more on microclimate. My 3 acres, mostly wooded, is on the border of 7b/8a...so much potential here. 😊
Dara Martin I am interested too. I hope he does a video on it
Dara Martin this on my list for y'all 😊
Dara Martin you read my mind!! I was just about to comment about a video about micro climates. Thanks 👍🏾
Think I saw an edit in there. Lol. Bananas are something we would like to do quite a few of on the property. How are they smell wise if you don't harvest them.
The Lean Homestead shhhhh don't tell anyone! 😜 I've never not harvested them, I don't think they would stink too badly.
Hey Pete, planted a bunch of banana plants in a section of my yard to try and create a bit of a canopy. What would recommend companion planting with bananas?
David Dakota where are you located? You could grow perennial peanut, sunshine mimosa, wax myrtle and blue porter weed from today's video.
Subtropical area in australia, was thinking maybe favor beans or peanuts, thanks for you help haha
Two pups appeared at the edge of my garage and the ground. Should these be transplanted to pots? If not moved will they damage the foundation?
Susan Paulson I've never seen bananas effect a foundation, they have pretty soft roots. They probably like the moisture from the concrete.
Musa basjoo is hardy to zone 7 or 6 with cover

Thanks so much for the reply. Discovered your channel through Justin, and loving it! keep em coming.
Its awesome that you can grow banana's, my favorite fruit!
1994abbygirl definitely one of my favorite things to grow in South. Home grown bananas have ruined me, I can't even eat store bought now.
I love them, loquats and lychee. Just delicious.

Gophers love to eat banana plants. I have found the stalks laying on the ground because the base was hollowed out. So frustrating!
you r awesome thank you for the knowledge
Byron Gomes much love! Thanks for tuning in.
You think I'll be able to grow them good in lake city florida
Is that Orinoco? Am I spelling it right? Are you selling them online?
Keith F yes that spelling is correct. We only propagate this variety by pups. We could probably ship small ones.
Do you have any dwarf varieties? We have 2 banana sections going already, but would love to add different varieties. We also have a truly tiny and I can't wait for it to produce! :)
Garden Guru yes my favorite dwarf variety is Dwarf Nam wah.
Thanks Pete. We haven't bought our bananas yet and this is a God send.

I wrap mine with bubble wrap through the winter up in Virginia it’s and idea I got for a guy who lives up in Canada
Salam gedang....😁
thank you Pete
I'm currently looking for Moringa Oleifera to grow
pereti wallace Pete has it on his website! Free shipping too! www.greendreamsfl.com/online-store
pereti wallace what Dara said :)
When I was in coasta rica they used bananas to dry out wet zones on coffee farms.
Murphy Built I've heard that before. They can definitely handle some wet feet. Costa Rica is on my wish list for this year .
Pete Kanaris GreenDreamsFL that place blew my mind. If I couldn't live in America, Costa Rica would be the place.

larolimu thank you! Ok microclimates are on list. Maybe figs, mulberries or Pawpaw?
We've been growing mulberries here in Kirchhorst, which I didn't know was possible. I absolutely l o v e those.
PETE! I’m looking online for bulk banana tissue cultures but can’t find them for less than 15 a piece which is waaaay too expensive

Quality information
are these orinocos a dward variety or full size? I am ordering on ebay but can only find dwarf.
I live in coastal Oregon 9b, same zone as you Pete. My problem is the summers are cooler then yours and I am told the reason we have no tropicals around here is we need more summer heat. Can you recommend varieties that need less degree days,?
We have a few people growing them successfully here in the Las Vegas area with proper watering and mulch.
are you able to make money off of your bannanas?
blackshadowPrime yes I make money selling the pups off of different clumps. The farm is still young and immature so once the bananas start producing beyond eating capacity we will be selling fruit :)
Grow bananas or go bananas lol...got 6 in my little forest 👊👊
Nice man! 👊
