Excellent small filing machine and very nicely made. I often used a large floor standing filing machine when I was a toolmaker. It was very quick and easy to rough out the die blocks on punch and die press tools prior to hand finishing.
What a interesting build. That would be such a useful addition to my Myford Super 7 lathe. Umm, I can see a future project in the offing. Thank you for showing it. Your finished build looks perfect. 👏👏👍😀
Great build Simon used a motor mounted one fifty years ago when an apprentice to file 16 SWG plate used as templates for a 10 to 1 pantograph for die making. Will have to buy castings and build one.
This leaves me to wonder if I can convert the jigsaw attachment for the Unimat SL into a die filer. Same concept, it attaches and driven by the headstock. The only problem is finding small enough files and how to attach them.
Very neat and the motion looks really smooth. You have made a fine job of it. Hmmm, I wonder if it would fit on my sc4 lathe? As I recall the distance from my cross slide to centre is around 60mm.
Easy to make it fit, I think I would mount it direct on the bed with a spacer block to get it to the right height. The centre height is not critical, 1/2” either way won’t make a difference.
I've always kept my eye out for a die filing machine but have seen very few available. I never thought about a kit, but I might now!

A fine example of this useful tool. I plan to get the kit and build one myself, once I finally finish the George Thomas Versatile Dividing Head.

Very good build and well explained! I do prefer separate machines for certain jobs though. Just my opinion
That looks very nice!

Now you can treat yourself to a fly press to go with it.
Where do you purchase the reversed files?
They are not reverse files, standard files mounted by the opposite end to the tang. Large files held by a screw, needle files are soft soldered.
