In this video you can see the Farm Boy engine running for the first time after painting and final assembly. No commercial parts except for a few nuts and bolts and a switch. Everything else including the spark plug and ignition system were built from scratch. The engine starts and runs well, in the video it is running on camp stove fuel (naphtha) I have tried other fuels including acetone. It i...

    Excellent small filing machine and very nicely made. I often used a large floor standing filing machine when I was a toolmaker. It was very quick and easy to rough out the die blocks on punch and die press tools prior to hand finishing.

    Hi. I'e read that O1 tool steel should be quenched in Oil and W1 tool steel in Water, O1 - Oil / W1 - Water. Is there a reason why you quench O1 in Water? Thank you.

    • @lindboknifeandtool
      @lindboknifeandtool 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If anything it’s overkill. Oil is required for steels that harden super fast, usually have a bit of chromium and alloy. 52100 is considered water or oil. Most steels can be oil quenched actually. Commonly down to 1000f then in air or water

    educational video. the first few minutes kinda went nowhere...probably should write it out, get the thinking clearer & edited. the discussion later on...perhaps the heat-treating by eye & oven needs calibration - via a thermal heat-detector-gun...just so you have better reference as to what temperature does what, when.

    On decarbonisation, an old-timer trick I have heard about (but not tried!) is to wrap the part in tin foil, get it airtight, and include a piece of paper inside the package; this burns and consumes the oxygen and thus the surface carbon cannot burn off.

    • @DogsaladSalad
      @DogsaladSalad ปีที่แล้ว

      This works but the foil needs to be stainless foil, aluminium foil or "tin foil" will burn off very quickly as it's melting point is low

    • @lindboknifeandtool
      @lindboknifeandtool 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Gotta be stainless “tool wrap” I think it’s 4 thousandths of an inch. 309 stainless for high temperature applications. Can be re used with care, with diminishing results of preventing oxidization. This goes for air hardening steels usually. Carbon steels require much less temperature so they aren’t effected by this as much. I heat treated AEBL without tool wrap and I had to grind a considerable amount to get tk hard steel. Same goes for m2… heh. I got the wrap now. Oh yeah and there’s anti scale you can paint on.

    Very neat and the motion looks really smooth. You have made a fine job of it. Hmmm, I wonder if it would fit on my sc4 lathe? As I recall the distance from my cross slide to centre is around 60mm.

    • @simonbirt6121
      @simonbirt6121 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Easy to make it fit, I think I would mount it direct on the bed with a spacer block to get it to the right height. The centre height is not critical, 1/2” either way won’t make a difference.

    • @simonbirt6121
      @simonbirt6121 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Andrew, Silver steel is quenched in water traditionally, all down to the composition of the material. Gauge plate is quenched in oil. Quenching in water gives a harder result in theory. There are whole books on the subject and many opinions, I just follow the advice on the material data sheet.

    Frightfully more expensive than the Indian homebrew examples made from scrap wood, superglue and underpowered ,small DC motors, yet this saw has the same major failing: The teeth ride on the work during the return stroke. This is devastating to the sharpness, temperature and life of the blade. In addition, having minimal adjustment to the stroke means that much of the blade is wasted as it will wear in a small section for most work. For the asking price (£392.50 = US$502), this is very poor design.

  • @NoTimeForThatNow

      Hello Mike, Yes they are expensive and yes it does drag on the backstroke. In practice this is not a problem; six months on and I am still using the same all hard Eclipse blade. The best bit is I made it and unlike the Chinese band saw I had when space was not an issue I didn’t have to rework it to get it to cut straight. I disagree with it being a poor design as it fists in small space cuts stock square and sits happily on a shelf above my metal store. I did look at the commercial options first and they are all either very bulky and heavy or have limited capacity. But then again I have made my own tool and cutter grinder together with a host of other equipment, most of which I could have bought for less than the cost of making. Perhaps I need to get out more?

    • @NoTimeForThatNow
      @NoTimeForThatNow 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Simon Birt it’s great that you’re pleased with it, it fits your needs and that’s what counts. But I could not justify the price for that. If it were half to maybe two thirds the price I could, but not at that steep for a kit I have to assemble.

    • @simonbirt6121
      @simonbirt6121 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s a bit more than an assembly job. The kit is bar stock and raw castings, arround 200 hours work.
