In 2013, Daniel Janse van Rensburg was illegally detained for more than 400 days in one of Equatorial Guinea’s worst prisons. Notorious for the brutalisation and neglect of prisoners, inmates at Black Beach are denied visiting rights and medical treatment. After eventually being released and returning to South Africa, Daniel sued the country’s vice president, Teodorin Obiang, the man he believes had him incarcerated at Black Beach. In 2021, the Western Cape High Court awarded him R39 million for his losses and suffering and illegal incarceration and ordered the attachment of Obiang’s assets. Then, on the 9th of February this year, two days after a super yacht belonging to Obiang was seized in Cape Town, two South African citizens were detained in Equatorial Guinea and sent to Black Beach. Coincidence or a perverse act of revenge?

This is why Africa is poor. The leaders are selfish and corrupt. Imagine if the ministers' wealth could be distributed among the population. Poverty will end instantly.

What you say is 100% correct. As soon as these people get any form of power they just can't seem to get enough!

National TV should have a crime channel 24/7 reporting on every single crime in SA with photos of the criminals and surveillance videos where available as the police cannot solve these crminal cases and perhaps communities will recognize the perpetrators; very few cases get prosecuted and criminals send to jail as most of the time the police have made a mess of the crime scene; dockets missing; bribes being paid etc.

Oil and gas wealth has been a curse more than a blessing for people wherever it's been found. Around the world. Always has some level of negative impact on domestic politics. Always increases corruption. Always leads to some level of increased despotism. Always. Everywhere. There are always some people who love the oil and gas money more than their fellow man or woman.

And those men are taxpayers. Their work outside SA is "worldwide income" taxed in SA. They're citizens - taxpaying citizens!! In a country with >60% youth unemployment... these men are valuable to SARS. The government should definitely start speaking to the public about what they plan to do. I also agree on the comments of employer's responsibility. They're making a profit from their employees being there. They need to do more. Visiting them, regardless how challenging that was, is still not enough. WHEN they get back those men should make MASSIVE deductions off their tax for damages, trauma, etc. OR they should sue SA (can they do that)
      Definitely should sue EG.

The South African government has a duty and obligation to its citizens to investigate the allegations and intervene diplomatically with the Equatorial Guinea's government and its judicial representatives. This is nothing more than extortion at state level. Pressure must be brought on the international companies that held contracts with these employees now jailed for obvious tit-for-tat circumstances. The companies have a duty and obligation to protect their employees from extortion and maul-justice. This outcome is no coincidence. The other contractor that was released having had a South African Court rule in his favour, having not as yet received compensation for illegal imprisonment speaks volumes.

  • @seanmyers8380

Lol, take it from someone who has been traveling abroad since the 1980s, the 94 government will do nothing to help these people, and you can bet those apologists sitting at DIRCO couldn't care less about them. They are still enraged that these men were able to find work and earn money in dollars outside of South Africa. The South African government thrives on envy; they do not want South Africans to achieve success in the world without their political support. These people would be better off appealing to the United States government, which is more effective in these matters; never expect the South African government to assist you in these situations; instead, accept that you are on your own. You're saying that a government that can't help its own people in its own country survive an energy crisis will help two people?

Since Daniel won a case of wrongful arrest in Liberia in a South African court. I am just wondering, how could western cape high court, SA, have jurisdiction on a judicial administration matter that happened in Liberia? Does it come because it was an SA citizens? Is this not some kind of bullying done by SA courts? Wouldn't diplomatic relationship will eventually suffer?
Imagine SA courts finding a USA/Chinese minister reponsible for justice and police administration guilty of wrongful arrest of a south african national in USA/China . The court then order the sale of minister's personal assets in SA. Isn't it obvious other country will react unfavourably?
