Khutsong near Carletonville on Gauteng’s West Rand is built on dolomite. It’s a soluble rock which means, over time, its structure is weakened by moisture in the ground, affecting its integrity and causing fractures and fault lines. Houses in the area are quite literally built on shaky ground. But, in Khutsong, there’s another problem: the cavities created by collapsing dolomite are being filled with sewage; a malodorous and disturbing clue about the danger underfoot. Apart from the giant sinkholes threatening to swallow the area, their contents point to the near-total collapse of the entire sewage system in the Merafong municipality. The reaction of the assistant, something like : "There are many departments involved, Education Sanitation etc.... Now you are talking about money?" is so indicative of the attitude of almost all government workers I have come across. EVERYONE wants to pass the buck and NO ONE want to take responsibility and actually solve anything. It's extremely sad.
I'm a geologist by training. The Eastrand and Centurion also face the same risks, however at a lesser rate than Khutsong. When sinkholes develop, sewage pipes break, which then cases the slightly acidic sewage water to percolate and erode more of the dolomite rocks underlying the whole area. Many of the construction projects in the area have clearly been approved without the directive/approval of the EIA and geotechnical report recommendation. This also carry significant risks for insurance purposes too. I am available for a thorough professional chat/opinion on this.

This is disgusting! I cannot believe the ANC, to use their words, will allow “their people” to live in these conditions. It also shows how hypocritical the ANC is. They will go on and on about the injustices of apartheid. What about the injustices committed by the ANC?
Those in power think they are there to be famous celebrities. They forget they are public servants who's job it is to SERVE their communities, not to be arrogant, ignorant, self serving and narcissistic. Shame on them for leaving their people to suffer like this. It is beyond disgusting. The buck stops at the top but the rot and corruption trickles down to every fiber of their lack of service. Corruption is evil! Love of money is evil!

The most painful part about all this is that the same community will vote for the ANC next year. No matter how we feel about everything in these country. The communities seem to enjoy this type of life.
Have no idea why the ANC municipalities do not have proper financial statements to proof where they have spent these millions and be brought to book and follow the money transfers and get the funds back; it is inhuman to live like this😭

Wtf!? I grew up in Blyvooruitsig and used to go to the sinkhole memorial. Then I lived in Carletonville. It wasn’t this bad. This is really bad. My family still lives there and I just didn’t know. That mayor needs to be thrown out! She and all her corrupt friends.

Same is happening with the Umdoni municipality in KZN. We have joined the UAG group, (UMDONI ACTION GROUP), and since 2020, have withheld our rates money from the municipality.

It's incomprehensibly difficult to grasp how money can just be given to municipalities that are incompetent to manage the basics. Where is the strategy or comprehensive plan and how the money is going to be used to solve the problems that the residents are facing?
This a very scary situation living in fear everyday of not knowing where the next sink hole may pop up and not to mention the school and safety of the kids.

This is so depressing. I could never imagine living in a house for 40+ years only for a sinkhole to destroy it and make me live in a “RDP”. However what makes this worse and funny is that how the mayor and her personal assistant react ( 11:24 ). I find it so difficult to feel sorry for the community. It is not something I want for everyone but my question to the community is “Why do you vote for the same party over and over again?” That is the thing that puzzling me. Communities need to start their own foundation to rise money to save their lives and their children's future, waiting for so could politicians to do their work it is very hard thing to do, South Africa needs to start fixing their own country and stop relying on politicians because they do things to fulfill their own interests without thinking about people who put them in power, how hard can it be when we can take matters in our own hands, then when they come for campaigns, we send them away like the workers who send the president away on worker's day
This is an absolute disaster. Complete council needs to be removed and replaced with people who have knowledge of taking command of situations and resolving the issues. Enough with the politics put people in place who have intelligence and the interest of the community being a priority NOT misdirection of funds and partying on the community.
