The crackdown on illegal miners, or so-called zama zamas, in Gauteng is heating up as investigators continue to apply pressure on smalltime syndicates. But the kingpins are moving on, approaching private landowners with financial offers they can’t refuse. The criminals rent a plot of land, then set up small refineries - complete with equipment and staff. Bags of gold-rich soil, dug up by zama zamas, are transported to these refineries, turning a simple backyard into a small mining operation. Carte Blanche investigates.

Anc. allowed. immigrants to come to sa unlawfully. After 1994. the control. at borders was relaxed.
Even now theu can arrest and deport. Honestly nothing stop them. They are.gvt of the day. It is lack of willingness.
I like Zimbabwe when it comes to their laws. They enforce their laws.
I cannot enter Zim without relevant documents.

This needs to be taught to people every African needs to know about this . The department of mineral and resources must easily issue artisanal mining licence so people can own small mines that comply with health and safety rules not everything is illegal about this just proper precautions need to be addressed and certification is needed.

Did you miss the part where all of this is done by illegal foreign nationals? Did you miss the Zimbabweans and Mozambicans named in this video? You want our government to issue licenses to illegal immigrants who have absolutely no knowledge or care for how their activities are ruining the environment and the people who live in it? There is a reason why the big mining businesses stopped operating and closed those mines in the first place. When the life of a mine is over, that's it. They have mined enough there and to the acceptable level of safety. Mining any further will cause harm to people and the environment like we are already experiencing in the Westrand with roads and houses caving in due to illegal mining. You are advocating for our government to issue licenses to mine already mined areas by people who have no skill, no competence or any capability whatsoever to do so without harming infrastructure and human beings in those areas. The government would be opening a can of worms and the lose of human life and damage to infrastructure is not worth it. Again I say, there's a reason why those mines where closed in the first place.

Funny thing is they have gold mines in their own country, instead they in a foreign country waiting to be sent back in body bags.

Masa (Carte Blanche) does not ask Rudy whether the 'Tenants' had any residence permits since they are Zimbabweans. Rudy welcomes them because they are Zimbabweans. Rudy himself is a Zimbabwean who is leaving a comfortable life in SA.
    This is very interesting

Thabo Mbeki is to blame for all the happenings in gold dealings. When Mugabe lost an election in 2008 he protect him and say the was no crisis. All the zama zama left Zimbabwe and came to South Africa because of mine closures. It’s going to worse. The next step is to go underground and break pillars that hold the ground. Government needs to move fast and stop this.

I dont suport anything ilegal but i want you to look deep into the current laws that closes the doors for poor africans from having proper documents to operate practising safety and proper enviroment management. If this was a registered refinery it would be benefiting the comunity. Big mining companies would do all it takes to stop owners of the land from getting proper documents and knowledge. They rather teach us to work for them
