anyone notice how much clearer you can hear the piano in these old performances? nowadays the band is always set much louder than the piano, you really get to hear the true genius in his writing with these older shows
He lost part of his speed and accuracy through the years, maybe now he prefers to manage his performance in a more efficient and relaxed way, leaning more on the band to carry on the whole concert, and piano comes out clearly only in solo parts. But yeah, back in the days, his level of playing-singing was outstanding.
Two things: 1. In 1982, he had a serious motorcycle accident that damaged his hands. It interrupted the production of The Nylon Curtain, bc it took several months to recover. Some of his playing dexterity was permanently damaged; 2. When he switched from Phil Ramon to Mick Jones as his producer, his sound became noticeably louder, busier, fuller. Although I enjoy those latter-career albums, I prefer the production of the earlier albums. I’ve seen him in concert three times. Two of them were in the “old days,” and the shows were incredible; the most-recent time was about 4 years ago, and the sound was, IMHO, just too noisy, with too many musicians and backup singers on stage-overproduced.
@@carlbaumeister3439 oh wow never knew that, but definitely would make sense. Totally agree with you, wish i could have experienced those old concerts!
I love all Billy Joel's songs, but this is my favorite of all of them. Every now and then my daughter and I play a marathon of all his great hits, and we always end with The Ballad Of Billy The Kid.
crazy to think this performance is nearly 50 years ago. I was born '85, all I've known my whole life is greats like Billy Joel. Saw him last night in Columbus, going to at least 2 more shows.
Ballad Of Billy The Kid is my favorite Billy Joel song. My daughter and I have spent countless evenings playing his whole catalog of songs, and this is the one I always want to hear last. Tha ks for this video.
The first album I ever owned was Glass Houses. I've been a fan since..... I tip my hat to you Sir. I thank you for a lifetime of wonderful music and memories. Please, write some more songs. Something sad and sweet, that we'll know complete.
Fantastic version of this early gem Love the piano on this and then the rocking band coming in Wonderful from the incomparable Billy Joel Backed by his awesome band too
@nickrizzi4927 I'm one of the minority who understands stuff on the internet lasts for a long long time. Appreciate it cause it actually reminds me to listen to stuff I haven't heard in a long time. In this case three years
War is A terrible thing and the sad thing is that nobody really wins vietnam was a true example of this Billy joel still includes this song in his set and all credit to him
I saw him in concert in August 1974 at the New Orleans Theatre for the Performing Arts. I remember him performing this song. It was from the Piano Man Album .it's my all-time favorite song of his . .
The Piano Maestro Strikes Again.. yes, strikes those keys with such accuracy and energy, wow... and his voice.. that Billy "the kid" is older now but always a musical genius! Such an incredible stage presence here! I got more out of watching this blurry old video than listening to the record I played many times over the years! And the band guys, without exception, all truly amazing!!!
actually recorded at Connecticut College in New London, CT. I have the original contract as I promoted the concert! A great early representation of a major artist!
You gotta LOVE Billy the Kid from Long Island - the fastest piano east of the Rio Grande...And I love, absolutely freakin' love watching Lib DeVitto banging the shit out of the drums - such a nerdy looking guy, a master at his percussive profession...What a combo...
He just means it is factually incorrect, as in Billy the Kid was a gunslinger who never actually robbed banks and he died via gunshot rather than be hanged.
Just listen to his Piano playing. The man has dynamite Skills

War is A terrible thing and the sad thing is that nobody really wins vietnam was a true example of this Billy joel still includes this song in his set and all credit to him
Just awesome lyrics and song writing. It’s Billy’s Mona Lisa.
I love your voice! ❤
I’m from a town known as Wheeling, WV, and as far as I know, Billy the Kid has no connection. Always loved this song for mentioning my hometown.
The best and most complete musician I know... An incredible talent!
Magnificent!! My favorite song

Love this song about a cold blooded murderer/ legend.
Liberty Rocks !!?
That tempo tho :D

when other musicians were wearing flamboyant clothing, he is in a shirt and tie.
👏👏👏
💓🎶🙏👁🎹🎹🎶💓💓
1:31 of you are ever feeling useless just know someone is playing the keyboard at a billy Joel concert
😆
the organ actually brings a more fuller sound, so i wouldn’t call it useless. without the organ it would feel naked
That's Richie Cannata
I love liberty devitto
Liberty DeVitto on drums ladies and gentlemen
Peter the Kid ..
¡3:20!
let him play
Well, what do you know about Billy the Kid?!!!
Piano Man il miglior songwriter
Like silvester stallone
wait that noise is his mouth i thought i was crazy for trying to do it
Beethoven…
Bach…
BiLLY.
Papa?
Did he call this song a bullshit song? Far from.
He just means it is factually incorrect, as in Billy the Kid was a gunslinger who never actually robbed banks and he died via gunshot rather than be hanged.
Bills bullshit makes perfect sense to me.
I always like his early stuff the best.
After “The Stranger” .. hmm, just OK.
Didn’t like the tempo! Good music tho. He rushed through this song like he was on a time schedule, or wasn’t enjoying what he did!
Joel was so great! And then he let himself get fat and bald. Bleeehhh.
I think that it is called ageing where it is genetic and your metabolism slows and how exactly do you "let" yourself go bald?
Bruh wtf, the man isn't immortal, he just aged out of his 20s
I think they were on coke ! Sounds great but faster timing
