Yeah, once him and Liberty split, it went downhill. I guess they FINALLY patched things up somewhat, Billy wrote the forward to Liberty's new book, I hope to have an autographed copy in the mail sometime soon.
I've been a Billy Joel fan since 1974 and I love all his music. But, of all his great songs, The Ballad of Billy The Kid has always been my favorite. since he released The Stranger album in 1977. From the piano riff at the beginning to the last note, it's a great song. Every now and then my daughter and I share a Billy marathon of songs and this is always the last one we play. Thanks for the video upload.
@@caseyshellenberger3294 No, I wish. I've never seen Billy Joel live. I've heard he is amazing in concert I have affectionately called him "Big Billy " all these. years.
@@caseyshellenberger3294I I live in Connecticut and I don't think I can go that far away to see a show like I did when I was younger at age 70. I'm glad he' still touring..
This man is a consummate professional as I saw him in '78 on a Friday night at the Checker Dome in St Louis following a show there by Jethro Tull on Thursday night. About half way through the show, Billy played about 8 bars of Jethro Tull's "Aqualung" on piano, "Sun streaking cold, an old man wondering lonely, taking time, the only way he knows. Leg hurting bad, he bends to pick a dog end, goes down to the bar to warm his feet....." After about 8 bars of this, he stopped and simply said, "Oh I'm sorry, that was last night!" And the place went crazy! He then went on to compliment Jethro Tull for his great show and talent, then just continued on with his own concert that was amazing including this song.
He's incredible. I'm sure he single-handedly sold more Sabian cymbals in his day than just about any drummer. I mean, if the things hold up to the wallops he gives them, then what the hell would I ever do to them?!? The power that sort of sound gives the song is simply amazing. He's a beast.
I Came Here For 2 Reasons! 1-> Absolutely Still Love Billy Joel, Even In 2024! And 2, Because, I'm Still A Die-Hard Browncoat, And Still Love Nathan Fillion And Castle Too! Love that Awesome Episode Where The Whole Crew Starts Singing (Billy Joel's 'Classic Piano Man!)
A person could love a song for years, but when you see the actual video of that exact version, it just compliments the whole effort, and puts a picture on the voice. ( so to speak).
His age and his size, took the teller by surprise, the word spread, bout billy the kid. Very underappreciated song, but I think its one his best, but he's got a bunch of best songs.
TOTAL RSPECT FOR BILLY AND THE BAND .... LOVE HIM AND THE BAND.... ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE DRUMMER...... EVERYONE DOING THIER PARTS ABOVE AND BEYOND EXPECTATION .... but Billy........ 5:09?????? booger on a newly well painted wall......... shows me your human....... teaches me to RESPECT those worthy REGARDLESS OF FALLIBILTY ........ TOTAL RESPECT Mr. JOEL.. AND BAND.............. MARVELOUS CONTINUITY AND MUSICALITY........ TY ONE AND ALL......... ty for posting........... peace ✌😎
Same here. That whole album and recording (outtakes) sounds a certain way. I think it's a combination of the acoustics of the venue, the fact Billy had Kevin Dukes on lead guitar instead of Dave Brown and Mark (who I'm not a huge fan of but anwyay) was often doubling the bass parts on baritone sax which sounded really cool.
@@sgtpepper1138 yeah he lost his upper range starting around 2001. The Toyotafest concert you can check out for evidence of that. That's the first pro shot show I know of where he's using a digital piano. He never went back to an acoustic piano after that as digital meant not having to relearn his own songs in lower keys.
He wasn't, he was from Wheeling West Virginia as it says in the first line. Billy Joel is from Oyster Bay Long Island and he had "a six pack in his hand". He is portraying himself as the "new" Billy The Kid!
I’m from the uncultured cut of guy that actually prefers the studio track of a song over the live version, I honestly just think it sounds cleaner and over all better, but I gotta admit I’d have probably burst the front of my pants out if I were to see this live... billy is a fuccin mad man
I’m from a town known as Wheeling, WV. As far as I know, Billy the Kid has no connection. Although Charles Manson did spend some of early childhood in Wheeling.
Best version?? Not even close.. Look up the same song at long island. Here Billy is off his face and not engaging with the audience at all. He looks like hes bored and wants to go home. If its wasnt for the chick and liberty on the drums it would suck.
Look, perhaps it's not the single best version, but it's damn good. He's there to play to song well, and that's what he did. While I can't speak to whether or not he's "off his face", this was in the midst of a break-up after nearly a decade, and very heavy financial troubles 😥I'd cut him a break
I Hope m’y neighbors like this song
What a smoking hot band. This line-up really kicks ass.
Yeah, once him and Liberty split, it went downhill. I guess they FINALLY patched things up somewhat, Billy wrote the forward to Liberty's new book, I hope to have an autographed copy in the mail sometime soon.
Better than shea stadium. Sometimes you just don't fix that's not broken.
liberty the old school drummer still kicks ass after all these years!!!!
I really appreciate the harmonica player!!!! That woman is AMAZING.

That's so awesome and so Billy Joel. He always shows great respect and admiration for his fellow artists.
In tears
The drummer. Awesome
Liberty gave his band character and backbone and we miss him greatly
Awesome... Liberty rules!!!!

In three years when this main comment is years old. The first comment here will be 6 years old. And this comment will then be 3 years old... perfect

Thanks Peter the kid! If not for that, I would have never found this amazing rendition of beautiful music 💓
Family Guy Never Die!! ✊
This song never fails to leave this native Long Islander misty eyed. Once and always to be nothing but a kid from Suffolk County.
A masterpiece.
If ever the guy at the drums looks as if he's having a major epileptic fit, it's always the fabulous and inimitable Liberty DeVitto!
One of my all time favorite Billy Joel songs!
Give Crystal Taliefero some credit..... damn the harmonica.
In this video she looks like she's enjoying the h*** out of the song.
Taking Time out of my busy schedule chasing road runner to see Billy the Kid.
I always like to say I knew who billy Joel was before he knew who he was. I have the original Cold springs harbor. Best storyteller ever.
Drums and harmonica, go Crystal!
Totally brilliant!!!! So tight , such a great band and who is the woman, brilliant performance!!
Omg, I’ve been looking for this performance for years. Love this version. Solid gold is all I have to say. Congrats.

Incredibly underrated song… it’s truly a masterpiece ❤
The late, great Tom "T-Bone" Wolk on bass, you may recognize him from a long run in the SNL Band, and Hall & Oates.
Everything about this is so uplifting. I wish I was here.
I saw that tour in Hartford, also saw him 86 during the world series game 6 in New Haven, was announcing the score during the concert!!!!!!
BRUTAL! TREMENDOUS! AMAZING! UNBELIEVABLE!

Watch "Old Henry" movie. Great take on Billy the Kid.
My word what a performance. Ta Bill.

Tbh, the live version of this song from his Russia album sounds different than any version I've heard, and I think it's the best

Clapping whistling cheering you rock billy and band
Sooooo good! Always a highlight of his shows
billy you´re the best!
I wish Billy and Liberty still performed together.
Awesome song!!
I see a great Copland hommage, here...great song, though, I think one of Billy' best..
3:52 his upper range sounds like his younger voice hahahaha
I love that, the Millenium Concert (which was heavily fixed in the studio) had that, and I think he lost it by 12 Gardens.
True! He used that register a lot in the early times. Later, he seems to lean more on his chest voice.

No, New York city's East side, poor Irish neighborhood. His mother, who was single, then moved them to Arizona
And his real name is Henry McCarty. But can you imagine saying "Henry the Kid," doesn't sound very popular lol
And Billy Joel was born in the Bronx in 1949 and LATER relocated to oyster bay. Y'all need to do your do diligence and research.
Happy Birthday Billy Joel 🎈
I LOVE Billy........ even with....... 5:07 to 5:09.... nobody's perfect.. luv u billy
that chick on percussions is badass
Crystal Taliefero; she's one of the people who everyone in the music industry knows, but few of us peons do.
Oyster Bay!
My home town ❤❤❤❤
Someone put up a historical marker at MSG for Billy The Joel 😆.
Best live version! Although Billy looks a little bored
niiiiiiiice
Wow! Nice!
I like to imagine Billy playin an impression of this rebellious wild west icon like i love to play impressions of 1970s new yorkers
The rolling fanfares in this seem to pay homage to Aaron Copland another of the many musical geniuses who come from the greater NYC.
yes i know.
yes for sure. Copland's phrases are in there.
Liberty DeVito ROCKS
He has a new book out.

Crystal Taliafero. She's something else.
TOMMY F@##IN BYRNES!
Tom Wolk on bass

Is that T-Bone on bass?
Is this Melbourne?

Oyster Bay enters the legends
What key is the harmonica in the intro in?
the version of the song "asa branca" by the Brazilian composer Luiz Gonzaga from 1947
Who is the percussionist that plays harmonica as well? Damn familiar and I can't pin it....
Canção totalmente inspirada na composição Asa Branca de Luiz Gonzaga ...👈😎😎😎🚴🚴🚴🚴

Peter the kid has brought me here.
Who is the female drummer?
2:42 🤘🤘🤘🤘
is Andrew Dice Clay on drums?😎
Billy the Kid was born in NYC not Wheeling, WV and he wasn’t a bank robber. He was a Cattle Rustler and Murderer. I’m confused.
I’m from a town known as Wheeling, WV. As far as I know, Billy the Kid has no connection. Although Charles Manson did spend some of early childhood in Wheeling.
Billy the Kid was never in Wheeling! Born and bred in Queens,
Bud Foucher Joel has said himself that literally nothing in the song is accurate.
LauriAnn R Billy the Kid...i think you'll find that he is not to be mistaken with Billy Joel. Google it and you'll see that I'm correct
Woah. So that's what a head voice sounds like 3:52
Not technically head voice. It's still a mixed voice, with a headier mix. But it sounds so good and so uniquely Billy Joel. IMO it's his sweet spot.
Billy Joel writes a western movie....
This concert was right after his divorce with Christie Lee wasn't it?
Yea
