A very UNIQUE backpacking tent - Nortent Vern 1 tent review

- Welcome to my Nortent Vern 1 tent review. This is a very unique backpacking tent. It's a solo tent that has 2 doors on one side. It's a 4 season tent that weighs 1.7kg plus 180 grams for the optional crossing pole. Nortent comes from Norway and is meant for all season 1 person tent use.
Personally, I love European tents as they are built to withstand our weather conditions be it hot, cold, windy or snowy. The quality of this tent is top notch and I love the little features like the Dyneema reinforced guy line points to the ventilation options above the doors, on the door and at the ends of the tent.
This tent is suited to tall people. There is a huge amount of internal length to the point where you can still put gear above, below and to the side of your long sleeping pad.
The ends of the tent uses small alloy poles to reduce the footprint of the tent. The fabric can be raised to increase ventilation too.
Initially it's a tricky tent to pitch perfectly but after a few attempts it goes up quickly and easy and the fabric is nice and taut. I really like the 14 heavy duty pegs which help the tent withstand some seriously adverse weather conditions when wild camping.
Overall, we are really impressed. The differences in design really do add to the useability of the tent throughout the year. The ventilation options are great and help reduce the well known condensation issues on solo backpacking tents. $400 plus taxes or £493 is a good price for a tent like this. It's certainly in the same league as the more expensive tent Brands.

Good video, and I got both Verns myself and your points are more or less spot on.
That being said, I just came back from a rainy camp without having seam sealed it, and not a drop came through.
My impressions is that the way the tent has been stitched together, more or less keeps the water out. But to be able to guarantee a 100% leak free tent, seam sealing is recommended, but probably not not necessary.
I do believe they use the same method as Hilleberg, and Hilleberg does not seam seal their tents
I remember reading somewhere that the people behind Nortent has not even seam sealed their own tent, but don't quote me on that :)
The crossing pole straps is that length so that it can be strapped together with the pair above or below the current one, if that makes any sense. That reduces the straps from flapping about.
If you cut the straps, this would not be possible.
The only drawback I have is the lack of footprint, but I do believe Nortent is working on that. The facebook group Nortent Owners Group may have more information.
Thanks for sharing 👍
My Akto and ANjan 2 needed seam sealer at one point each for a leak, the AKto at the vent and the anjan 2 for the elastic toggle in the porch.
I'm norwegian and I've never heard of this tent. but I will be sure to check it out. Good tip, so thanks
This is one of my favorite backpacking channels. Fantastic! Greetings from Munich Germany
Brilliant looking tent, you created brilliant review bud!
Good review Andy, you can clip the straps to each other when not using the crossing pole and there's no flapping . I also never seam sealed mine and it never leaked. Cheers A
A pretty good option for backpacking all year and in exposed areas. I mean it looks solid. Reminds me of Noridsk. Mind there's some good gear coming out of them countries. This is no exception. Thanks for sharing. Mark
What a really helpful and well presented review. Some of the premium manufacturers could do with giving thought to some of the unusual, but so useful, features of this tent. Like you, I really like the double door idea as it opens up the possibility of pitching with the door to the view far more of the time as you can choose which is the fixed end of the porch. Not sure this beats the Terra Nova Southern Cross for me, but it was great to see your presentation on a wet and dark evening.
One of the best 1 man tents on the market I’ve seen! I would of preferred to have seen you pitching the tent properly to see how long it takes and how tricky it is. Love the design. Interesting issue you raised about needing a large area to pitch. Thanks for your time making this review!
I pitch Vern 1 or 2 under 2 minutes, its very fast pitched when you have done it a couple of times. 6 stakeouts, one or two poles in the sleave and your done.
Would have said that the award would go to the Hilleberg Akto but after getting the Soulo BL , this gets the award.
looks pretty cool. a nice tent for tall people. They seem far and few between to find. i love the vestibule design.
I agree, I am 190 cm and I find it very roomy.
That's a sharp looking tent. Thanks for the review. Unfortunately it's a bit out of my price range. I like the well thought-out design and look of these tents available from Europe.
No tent designed in Europe is cheap. Each about $400+
The crossing pole straps you can clip together Andy. Plus, I have not seam sealed mine yet and there was no ingress in heavy rain. Other manufacturers use the same construction method and dont recommended seam sealing, why is that? Are Nortent just being belt and braces?
I like a lot of the UK design tents, but I wish they made more mesh inners than they do. On the other hand, I'm kind of glad they don't because then I'd buy them and God knows I've got enough tents already.
Great review, thanks! . Me concluding: so it's got potential, but now is basically: a 2kg, too long and noisy 4 season tent. It's not suitable for the intended (tall) people because it lacks internal height and has vents blocking easy access. I'll stick to my Helm 1 compact, at half the price. 😊
3 times the price
As a tall guy using this tent, I do not agree with your conclusion. The straps can be joined together, and will prevent it from flapping about.
The inner height is true, it is not a tent for ballroom dancing :) But for me at 6'3 it was a non issue, and worked more or less like any other single hoop tent.
But to be fair, I also have large feet (Size EUR 50) and they did come in contact with the inner tent when stretched out. I seldom sleep like that, so it works for me.
But I am sure the Helm 1 is a superb tent, and the best tent there is, is the one you are happy with 👍
@@ringperm Thanks for the update on the straps 👍 Can imagine for you the extra inner lenght is very useful. Yes, I'm happy with the Helm 1 for now; for me 173cm / 5'8" and tight on budget, it will do as a 3 to 4 season tent. 😊
Well the Helm 1 is £250 msrp, the Nortent is £350 (including shipping)
Good review Andy. Is that the newest model.cheers mate
No, this is the older model, but I believe they will continue to sell it as it’s very different to the new version.
You was the first in uk to review this tent now everyone reviewing & going mad about it .
Very reminiscent of the Tarptent Scarp 2.
Great looking tent, price fairly decent I think I would rather pick one up next time om over there, Although I am looking at the pomoly leo 2.
To be totally honest, I don't know a huge about there tents but I'm really impressed with this one.
very interesting tent, what do you think compared to the Terra Nova Lazer Compact AS which would you rate more ?
I really rate the TN. My only complain is the vestibule is small.
Brilliant review Andy
And a amazing looking tent with some fantastic features,
Can see what your saying about the footprint size though in certain areas
🏕️🤙🗻
It must be the longest solo backpacking tent out there but that does also mean a large footprint. I guess you can't have it both ways!
Great review Andy, as always.
But I think the low head height, large footprint and nearly £500 for a tent you have to seal yourself would mean it's a no from me.
I have not seam sealed mine, and after a rainy camp this weekend I can safely say that the tent remained bone dry. I think the seam sealing is more to err on the side of caution and not really necessary.
great looking tent and features, if only they did a 1.5 version or even gave it a true 1 meter high so can sit up and the colour !! great in winter but a black tent in the summer and agree with the seem sealing, thats the reason I didn't buy an MSR Access... 2 doors is great but shame you cant realax and sit up in the tent, who wants to lie down continually when winter camping
Great review and a really flexible-looking tent. Price is problematic, though. Available Stateside for USD400, which is about GBP327. Valley and Peak charging £493 looks like taking the piss,. Yeah, I know they aren't the only ones doing this...
At those prices you would expect it to be seam sealed!
The uk charges import duty a nice little earner for your government
It’s cheaper to buy one here in Australia !
@@davidhale1568 If the tents are exported from Norway (EEA country), I believe UK import duty should be zero or low. Not my area of expertise, so happy to be proven wrong on that. Realistically doesn't cover all of the approx 50% mark up. It's probably cheaper for us Brits to get it shipped all the way from Australia to the UK...
@@chrisbardell wonder if they are made up in China or Korea?
@@davidhale1568 In fact, I made it clear that who makes it is not the point, although China is responsible for the production of many countless tent brands. What you pay more attention to is the price! This is what matters to you. If you want better workmanship, you can pay more for better details, use a more advanced sewing machine or use fabric.
Same as always, tents from Scandinavia are expensive. It’s even cheaper to import a Vango. I’ve stuck to various Vango tents. F10 range is what I mostly use and have been for over a decade now.
1.7kg though…….My F10 Nitro Lite 200 weighs 1.48 kg and has more room.
Hi Andy what are the poles made of?
9mm aluminum poles 👍
Looks cool tent. Im 6.5 tall. 😂 good price for 4 season tent
what is your opinion on 20d fly material? sounds a bit too weak for 4 season..
No, it’s fine, 20D is fairly standard.
Not seam sealing it is a turn off for me.Also the not keen o;the cross over pole idea as when your not using the tent would look saggy and when you are this takes the weight up to nearly 2kg when you can get a Terra nova proton AS for less money and 4 season all sealed. Bu5 great review and all personal choice.😊
Absolutely, there's positives and negatives as with all tents.
I m really Interested in this tent, just waiting for more feedback from users..
I know what you mean. A few people mentioned this tent after my Best Backpacking Tent - Single Pole Edition Review. I'd seen it, but I didn't know anything about Nortent or the Nortent Vern 1. I must say I'm really impressed and I now understand why people were recommending it to me.
@@BackpackingUKBTW what poles and how thick this tent got? some ppl mentioned poles r unbranded for now..
I am a user, and probably also a bit of a fanboy, given the amount of comments I have on this video and I really enjoy this tent.
Would you say this is better than the terra nova southern cross 1?
They're very different and suit different people too. The SC1 is freestanding whereas the Nortent is a single pole design. I would say the SC1 is too small for tall people. Likewise the Nortent is very long and shorter people don't get the full benefit of the tent.
I'm 6 foot 4 and the SC1 does the job no problems. Looking at this nortent I don't think I could lie down and cook too easily because the inner door is so Central.
I want one
is this tentbetter than fjallraven abisko lite1 in your view?
I haven’t owned that Fjallraven Abisko Lite 1 so I can’t really comment properly.
Superb looking tent and review Andy. I'm 165 cms so could the dog (labrador) go at the foot end or is there room along side? Cheers mate 🤜🤛
Possibly the side if you have a slim / regular mat. Failing that, I don’t see why your dog couldn’t be at one end.
@@BackpackingUK I got the Exped Ultra 3R mat. The missus can have the vestibule hehe 😂 Cheers Andy. 🤜🤛
We have tried the Vern 1 with a golden retriever. 190cm tall guy, a thermarest xterm 65x195cm. The golden retriever was sleeping next to the matress. No problem there
@@friluftslivinorr Takk skal du ha
My medium size dog fits next to me in the Vern 1, no problem.
Seam sealing is time consuming and would add a lot to the price. Considering this, most people dont winge and are happy to do it themselves.
NO. If produced in China, the cost of Seam sealing is very low, depending on whether the fabric is made of silicone on both sides. Just like lanshan2pro, which is a double silicone fabric, the machine cannot heat and press the waterproof strip on the silicone fabric because the silicone fabric is too slippery, so users are asked to use glue.
Let's face it, all these tent manufacturers are having our pants down with the prices, I bought a 5 man berghaus tent with a pump for £550. Compare that with what you get here and there's no comparison. As a hilleberg owner myself I know all about it😂
As soon as I heard the price... I already know it's not for me :D
As far as I'm concerned, if it needs seam sealing it's not fit for purpose, I have no idea how manufacturers get away with it, And 3 metres long?
Looks a great tent but I feel it's not for me.
I know we're all different to what we want and need.
I have a Helm Compact 2 which I found the best option for me.
You're skipping though parts of pitching...this is important stuff for a lot of people. I do agree about the seamsealing...especially on tents (backpacks potentially to a lesser degree but still)...
Most people skip these parts hence why I condense them. I’m sure Nortent have an official pitching video on TH-cam. This video was intended to be a review, not a pitching tutorial.
Mistake. For a lot of people the ease of pitching, seeing how it's done, how many stakes (or as you guys call it pegs) are needed all factor in and can sway a person towards one tent or another. For those who don't need that info, you already have it bookmarked so they can easily skip it and go to the next section. It's a win win... @@BackpackingUK
I noticed this with all your tent reviews...otherwise I like yours videos 🙂@@BackpackingUK
How can it be unique when it's an almost exact copy of the Tarptent DW moment?
Don't be silly, it's not at all!
My exact thoughts as well...
I've got the moment and that was my first thought.
This tent is 500 quid!!
you do reviews but hardly see any wild camp vids
That's because TH-cam is saturated with wild camping videos. Thousands must be posted every month. Only a handful do well, and if they do, I can guarantee you half of them are pure clickbait. It's a shame, but it doesn't make me want to video all my adventures. My last 3 Days in the Lakes video only received 4k views. A lot of time and effort when into that video for a relatively small amount of views. It's a nice time piece for me to keep and share, but it certainly isn't worth the time and effort just to generate about £10 in revenue. I'd get more views reviewing a collapsible cup on my sofa!
@@BackpackingUKcan’t argue with that mate!
The 3 Days in the Lakes video is already out. This is the problem with TH-cam in 2023, often my subscribers don't get to see my new releases. I accumulate a lot, but I tend to sell gear to fund new gear. I keep reinvesting in the channel. I'd love to be in the position these American guys are and get everything for free!
Nice tent but Way to expensive im afraid , not budget friendly 😢
£493 pounds I want a circus 🎪 tent for that price 😳
Nice. Too pricey for me..
It's an awful design. I've used it for a while now. Bought it just before they brought out the new version (which is way too heavy for my liking).
Tall people? Getting in and out is pain. The toggles for holding the doors are just ridiculous. I've been backpacking and camping for about 30 years, I've a load of tents, this is by far the worst.
A cheap Vango Banshee knocks the pants of this monstrosity of design...
Don’t guild the lily: things are unique or they are not. There are no degrees of uniqueness and something can’t be ‘very’ or ‘barely’ unique - like being pregnant one is or is not unique.
Quite right. A very marvellous comment.
. . . . although, if you're going to be pedantic, you might at least spell "gild" correctly 😂
bet you’re fun at parties
@@Airship17 sorry, you are right. I need to stop writing on the bus.
Don't gild* the lily...😂
VAUDE Taurus UL 2P Tent cheaper and better.
It’s a totally different tent.
To much money to buy, over priced
