Wet & Windy Wild Camping in Snowdonia - was I WRONG about this tent?

  • We've come to Snowdonia National Park to go Wild Camping. Our backpacking trip starts at Llanberis hiking through Dinorwic Quarry before reaching our first summit. The forecast proved wrong for our wild camp where we ended up wild camping in heavy rain and strong winds.
    I brought my 2024 Nortent Vern 1. Mark has got the TarpTent Scarp 1 and Brian the Hilleberg Akto. All these tents are suitable for winter camping. These are are solo camping tents too albeit all very different.
    Please check out my Instagram / backpacking_uk and join the 6,000+ followers already on there!
    Unfortunately, I didn't bring my waterproof trousers so my bottom half got soaked including my hiking boots. My Fjallraven Vidda Pro trousers aren't remotely water resistant! The wind was too strong to use my waterproof backpack cover so anything that wasn't in a dry bag got damp. Yet again, I broke more AV equipment too. Wild camping uk vlogs are costly in poor weather conditions.
    The Nortent Vern 1 stood up to wild camping in strong wind and heavy rain really well. The inner doesn't flap about unlike other tents and the structure remained strong throughout. It's spacious too for solo tent camping. The little touches really make this tent, I'm really impressed.
    Backpacking gear used:
    Osprey Aether 60 backpack
    Nortent Vern 1 tent
    Big Agnes Rapide SL sleeping pad (regular wide)
    Sierra Designs Cloud 20 sleeping bag (regular)

    Flextail Gear R2 sit pad
    Sanmarc head torch
    Nitecore NB10000 battery pack
    GoalZero lantern
    OEX Heiro camp stove
    Sea to Summit bowl, mug and spork
    Sponge, OEX hand towel and micro towels
    Hiking gear used:
    Salomon Quest hiking boots
    Darn Tough socks
    OMM Kamleika jacket (100% waterproof!)
    Thrudark Ithrax jacket
    Fjallraven Vidda Pro trousers (100% not water resistant!)
    OMM Raid insulated trousers
    Merino Wool base layers
    Xtremities gloves and neck warmer

    Just knew you would be straight out of the door with the 2024 Vern 1 after yesterday’s review 😂, which is why I waited until today before pulling the trigger and buying it. I hike in the Southern Alps, so unfortunately I have to spend extra for safety which is why this review is so helpful. Was all set to buy the Soulo but this seems to be better, irrespective of price. Great review. Thanks

    The new Vern looks great, apart from all the great features and the strength of it it’s also just a great thing to look at! Even the colour is great! But I still think if I was in the market for a proper mountain tent the Kuiu Storm Star would be the one I’d go for. Same pole design, same rock solid strength, loads of pockets, same weight but bigger and two doors.

      If you're 6ft or over the Storm Star is a one man shelter, you'll have to sleep diagonally to avoid touching the sidewalls and getting condensation on your bag.

    This is getting compared to the Soulo but no one is mentioning the Southern Cross 2 which is more expensive than the vern 1 but cheaper than a Soulo but is lighter and more roomier than the vern and has proven over the years that it can handle the 4 seasons of the uk weather, based in the uk with great customer support

      This looks like it has more space than my SC1, that only has 50cm deep vestibule against this 65cm. Other dimensions look similar and the twin poles stop the inner sagging like miss Haversham's curtains which is a real pain with the SC1. But this weighs nearly half as much again compared to the SC1.

    • @freddiemercerful
      @freddiemercerful 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Couldn't agree more mate, I wrote an email to Terra Nova saying that they just need to add 20% extra space to the Southern Cross 1 and it would still weigh less than both the Vern 1 and the Soulo, it would be way lighter than the Southern Cross 2 (it wouldn't have the extra door, zips, pegs etc). They seemed quite responsive (they probably get annoying emails like that all the time mind you! Haha). I also told them to get rid of the red pole, go for a nice gold or bronze, still would look cool but way more stealthy for wild camping. Bring on the Southern Cross 1+ I say! I've got the Southern Cross 1, good tent and I will keep it for a while but does need more room really especially for winter.

    Good to see this tent put through its paces Andy. I'm looking to buy a four season tent. The Nortent Vern 1 looks pretty good. I used to have a one man ridge tent which stood up to some wild storms. 3 poles at one end, two at the other. It had an inner and fly, and was really warm in winter (Schiehallion in the snow) and could fit two men or my fiancé plus dog). I could never fit it in my back pack & I think it was quite heavy. Eventually the seams became so stretched it leaked a lot. I wish I could remember what make it was & the specs. I have photos & videos of it somewhere.

    Thanks for sharing, the weather can be brutal sometimes. I’ve been soaked before many times even through waterproof coat and trousers. Im taking 4/5 of my fellow teachers to Dartmoor in 2 weeks to give them a Dartmoor experience before we take a group of Gold DofE students there. I’ve been thinking a lot about what equipment I want to take and haven’t decided whether I’m taking a tarp and bivvy or my BL Soulo. I was going to wear my newish Vida Pro trousers but they’re not waterproof as you say. I need to plan what we’re eating too. On one hand I’m thinking I just buy dehydrated food, I’ve enjoyed tent meals before too but on the other hand I think we should use Trangias to have a proper DofE experience. Thanks for sharing!

    Good to see U out Andy, my 1st hike to Snowdon was from Llanberis... Was a very memorable trip at the age of 15🙂, but now 53😕 I've still got our list of route coordinates hidden away & like to think that I'll return there in the near future maybe with my boys...🙏 That tent looked solid👍 but shame U got soaked...!👎 Was that the OEX Heiro Stove U were using...? Not having used one before, I wasn't sure if the insulating jacket on the pot was supposed to stay on when cooking, as I thought it might burn or melt, as seems like a type of neoprene material... Plus in an English Woodsman video I'm sure he got his one burnt by a mate & was not very happy😄🤦, but I can't remember how that happened now...!🤣 I like Ur saying "Hope for the Best, but prepare for the Worst...!"👊 Actually that doesn't sound quite so positive now🙄😆, but very true...✔️ "Act in Haste, Repent at Leisure...!"😂💯 Have a goodun dude...

      It clearly states double-poling. That's the problem, people don't read the instructions. It's not just this tent, it's all tents. I feel sorry for the Brands who end up having to replace the poles and get a bad rep too.

      @darkshaman7087 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@BackpackingUK yes its does mention about double poles if users only looked at the instructions, its either get stronger poles or double up with their brand and they ain't to expensive but more to carry, the tent material have with stood the elements and thats the main thing, it keeps dry inside and have not torn even when a pole have snapped so its shows its strength, someone needs to now double pole this tent and get out there in the high winds and give it another go before destroying its repetition anymore.

      I didn't seal it and there was absolutely no sign anywhere of water ingress. Length looks great for tall users, but is the headroom good too? Specs say the external height of the Vern 1 is 100cm… so I’m guessing the internal height is similar to a Hilleberg Soulo. Interestingly, Hilleberg only give the internal height of the Soulo (95cm) and Nortent only give the external height of the Vern 1 (100cm)… but I’m guessing they both have similar internal height?

    • @BackpackingUK
      @BackpackingUK  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I've heard other reviewers have said they've measured 95cm. I did mine roughly with a tape measure so it's definitely not accurate. However, I will say my head never touched the inner, even when sitting on my pad, so it's likely to be closer to 95cm.

    I have a TT SCARP 2 and have "engineered" my X-ing Poles to run UNDER the fly and anchor in the grommeted webbing that I removed from the outside and sewed just at the apex of each corner PitchLock strut triangle. (VERY strong anchor point)
    Then I stabilized the poles by sewing and seam sealing shortened double-sided Velcro cable wraps to the two lower reinforcement points for the outer X-ing Pole straps for each pole. I had to shorten each pole 6" to fit properly. Damn near bombproof!

      Had all sorts of waterproof jackets over the years from Mountain equipment to paramo, but the Keela Munro tops them all.
      If it's used by mountain rescue in Scotland it must be good.
      And for a steal at £165
      All the best,

Can you recommend them or have you any comments about them? I have bought many waterproofs in the past and not found any of them 100% waterproof. Hi Andy , not quite as energetic as you but enjoy outdoor trips and camping all year lucky to be near Dartmoor . Can you give a minute please to give me your thoughts on a possible tent I want to buy . Simply put , really like to buy a nice roomy tent for all round camping but not extremely high winds . Dream tent is the North Face Bastion 4 . No doubts , brilliant , great ! BUT....... Trust Pilot reviews of the company are nightmare really bad .
    The website seems vague about delivery times and you can't tell where it's being sent from . £850.00 is a lot to risk . Safer with a credit card but was shocked to see 89% giving a 1star rating .to North Face . I know there are always spiteful reviews but 89% . I suppose I've answered my own question but that tent ticks every single box . Ha , sorry to bother would be good if you have any advice . Enjoy your channel and reviews , thanks

I live in low mountain ranges, so these are just hills for me.😁 If I go hiking and camping in the Austrian or Swiss mountains, I can't do it in one day. I'm usually spending 2-3 nights on the mountain until I'm back at my car. But I like the rough landscape in the UK. It seems like it's always very windy and very humid where you hike.

    What's not to like about those double doors. Do you think you'd get away with using lighter pegs for non-extreme weather scenarios? I'm looking to see where any weight can be shaved off!

    • @BackpackingUK
      @BackpackingUK  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      For good weather there's no need for the footprint or all those legs. The groundsheet is already really thick (70D) so should be ok for most ground surfaces. It's fairly solid with just 6 pegs. 8 or 10 and it shouldn't move at all. Even the main bag is quite heavy with a big pole bag and big peg bag. I'm sure you could trim a bit of weight off.

    • @AntonHikeAndCamp
      @AntonHikeAndCamp 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If I've read correctly the whole thing as supplied with the footprint, spares & stuff sacks is 3.1Kg.
      The footprint is about 320g, the seam sealer & spares pack is around 100g so taking them out gets you down to around 2.7 Kg.
      I can't find a weight for the tent/pole stuff sacks, but if every gram counted I guess you could ditch them and drop 100-200g (possibly more) for an even lower total 👍

    • @BackpackingUK
      @BackpackingUK  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The specs are pretty much the same. The ends seem a bit more aero than the Soulo and it has more guys too. I don’t see why it would be any worse. Obviously, the Hilleberg is a higher quality tent but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll outperform the Vern in the wind.

    Hey, I'm having a hard time choosing between the Nortent Vern 1 2024 and the Kuiu Storm Star 2p. Which one do you think is better?

    • @BackpackingUK
      @BackpackingUK  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      To be honest, you've got two of my favourite tents there. I'm also looking at the Storm Star. Both are excellent value for money compared to the Hillebergs (literally half the price) and apart from one or two incidents, there is lots of content out there showing these tents in all weathers.
      The Storm Star is definitely bigger. It also has a vestibule on each side too. It ticks a huge amount of boxes plus it has DAC poles too.
      The Vern is really well made and has some great features including excellent ventilation. The footprint is smaller making pitching easier up high.
      I think it depends how much space you want and if you want a bad weather tent or a full-on storm proof tent. If I was storm chasing in winter I'd go for the Storm Star as the extra space would be nice with the long nights. However, for any other time I'd probably want the Vern.
      Hope this helps!

      Thanks for your reply, mate.
      It's a tough choice, innit? I'm going solo, however, I do like my space in my tent. The Vern 1 2024 has some cool features, like clips for keeping the doors open, mesh ventilation zips, and a stuff pocket for the inner door. But the Kuiu Storm Star 2p has no mesh on the vents, only on the inner doors, roll-toggles doors but more space, great storage pockets, two vestibules, and it's really sturdy. I'm leaning toward getting the Kuiu because of the space, but the Vern 1 has some nice small details, as mentioned above, that are making it hard to decide! 🫣🤦‍♂️🤔
