    As much as i like this tent it seems a bit pricey for what it is. 10 years ago i bought my miltec recon for £65 and its still going strong, i replaced the pegs and poles for lightweight aluminium versions so all in all the tent cost about £100, I'm surprised more people don't opt for that tent.
    Good informative vid. 👏👏👍❤️🇬🇧

    Love the review, Andy. Thank you. I had it’s predecessor which wasn’t long enough for my lanky frame (I’m 6’6”) I’m keeping my eyes open for a lighter weight alternative to my Crux Assault which is a nuke shelter and just big enough for me and the hound whilst weighing 2kg plus pegs. I need to have a physical look at this. I prefer side entry tents but would love a door each side to allow for ventilation options and for change of wind direction.

      @chrishamilton2527 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@markatchison9974 thanks, Mark. I have owned one of those and loved it - until it got flattened in high wind and bent a pole. The trouble is, you lose faith when that happens. I had my Crux out over Christmas hols & New Year and recorded gusts up to 71mph and she took it like a trooper. It’s not brilliant when it’s below 0°C though as the single skin ices over and then it’s not so nice. I been through so many tents …….
      Weight, for me, is critical as I love mountaineering and long distance hiking.

    This is just the review that I was looking for. One question, is 98cm the highest point of the inner or is it the highest point of the outer flysheet?

  • @justmyopiniontoday7548
    @justmyopiniontoday7548 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes good well organised review with experienced comments. I would have thought that being a literal 4 season adaptable as opposed to winter focussed tent is not that relevant as typically mid to high end buyers own a a series of tents and bivvie bags to chose from for the season, altitude, and weather anticipated? You emphasised its attractive floor space for dressing etc to which one could add IMHO that extra height at the end stakes over the akto, and aided further by that trianglular fly shape, is so important for keeping the inner off your face and feet. Thx for posting. JMO

    Hi Andy, great review. I pre-ordered mine and got it in mid-April. It is taller that the previous AS1 and AS2 tents which is better for sitting up in. I had a very wild and windy first night on Little Whernside which was challenging, but it held up well. I can manage with the entrance porch but it would be better if it was about 5cm wider. You can double pole it if you buy a second main pole. The pegs are very good, unusual in my experience. My previous Laser Large 1 tent came with flimsy carbon pegs which cracked. I got some titanium pegs which were light but couldn’t be used for the key anchor points. I’ll avoid exposed pitches on fell tops but I’ll be using it all seasons with the footprint.

    • @BackpackingUK

      Scarp 1 is a real contender! There’s only a few tents out there that are genuine all season backpacking tents.

  • @paulcupboard
    @paulcupboard ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Just bought this tent. Agree with your review totally. The thing I am most concerned about is how saggy the inner tent is. Tried for an hour to sort it and it is still really not great. Going to try again and peg out the inner tent separately to the outer to see if that helps. I don't think the elastic peg points help. Might look to replace them with a paracord tie out to see if that helps. Disappointed I will have to take additional pegs with me for this tent. Have you managed to find a way to deal with the inner sagging?

    • @BackpackingUK
      @BackpackingUK  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From my experience it’s a Terra Nova thing, the Southern Cross and Pioneer are the same. It can be fixed through some mods but it’s a pain!

    Looks very nice i used to have a similar design wild country zephros but it drove me mad it was so saggy but those extra 2 guy lines on the ends look much better and i agree terra novas inners are shocking so loose and billowing

    • @BackpackingUK
      @BackpackingUK  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's my issue with some single pole tents, they're simply not taut enough. This is great though!

  • @justmyopiniontoday7548
    @justmyopiniontoday7548 ปีที่แล้ว

    Also in IMHO that triangular as opposed to rectangular vertical shape should make it relatively wind stable for its weight. When 30mph plus winds hit the side of a tent with a vertical wall a tent takes a shock that distortes the poles than an angled gently ascending wall as in this new lazer AS - due to its generous floor area for weight and triangular fly shape - does not. This is part of why I do not trust the TN Voyager 2 tent at 2kg (and so many other similiar tents.) When you stop and stare at the voyager you see near vertical side walls with a single side guyline and zero guylines at the tail and no direct in front guyline to support that front cross pole. Just MHO. Thx for posting.

    Great looking compact tent, as the name suggests. Agree with other about the price though. When you can get the absolute palace of the southern cross 2 cheaper. I know there’s a weight and pack size difference and obviously the pitch size. Difficult to decide as my budget will only stretch to one. The wild country options honestly look very poor in comparison. I guess it’s what I want it for, luxury space in the southern cross 2 or small & lightweight for multi-day hikes? Help !!! 😂😂

    Another great video, I personally didn’t find the vestibules that small. I liked that I could tuck items at either end which helped with space. However I must admit one of the reasons I preferred the telemark 2.2 Lw was because I have move space inside the tent for bag etc, rather than in the vestibule.

You were in the tent when mentioning it’s 220cm long which suggested that’s the length inside, but according to the specs that’s the outer length. Great video. I've been looking forward to a better look at this one. I'm torn between this and the SC2. I know it's heavier but I think the extra space and similar venting makes it an option. Also when doing maintenance or cleaning I would be setting up the tent indoors so a freestanding tent makes that easier. But I like the AS so I am torn! The winner for me might just be which is safer. Which would survive worse conditions? I only camp on Scottish hills and mountains so it's important.

      Good tent, I agree but it’s the old weight issue trade off. There are a few lighter weight tents that are super tough but it’s the old triangle: weight, cost, functionality. There are tents like some Hillebergs, Fjallraven, Crux etc etc but as the weight goes down and functionally you keep the criteria, the £ goes shooting up. It’s why I keep watching these video’s for that breakthrough. 🤞

    • @geneticjen9312
      @geneticjen9312 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@chrishamilton2527 Right now I'm trying to decide between this AS and the Southern Cross 2. About 800 grams more for bigger tent, two doors, similar ventilation, extra pole for support (I camp in Scottish Highlands), bigger vestibule (two of them), and being freestanding means I can easily do maintenance indoors at home (I have no garden). Reading all that it sounds like a no brainer I should get the SC2 but it's more expensive and nearly a kilo heavier so it does balance them out for me. Problem is they're balanced too much, I can't decide haha

    • @chrishamilton2527
      @chrishamilton2527 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@geneticjen9312 for me, the weight is absolutely critical - it really factors between a mission and enjoyment. Yes, two doors and vestibules are fantastic but for me it’s focussed on the weight and 800gms is also the weight of bigger bottle of Smart water. The lighter weight wins this for me.
      I used to hike with 18-21kg with all the luxuries but it becomes too much when water and food were added.
      I’m now closer to 10kg including water and food and suddenly it’s very enjoyable again. This goes up to 12 kg for winter with extra food and clothing but slightly less water (heavier sleep mat, extra thermals; change to warmer quilt). I still have a chair as well. Big change to get lighter was my cook set.

      But you must remember it’s ONLY £550 with the 20% Discount 🤣🤣🤣
      As you say, way to pricey when the average Joe & families are struggling to make ends meet with the current cost of living crisis and the exorbitant Gas & Electricity prices.
      There are more important things to deal with right now, never mind £690 for a Tent.

At the momemt I am using Chaser 2, which is claimed with up to 200 km/h wind resistance... sure material, not bad pitching. So far I tested it with 70 km/h which is quite a blow.

      My Crux has faced severe winds and stood up to them without much fuss - I’ve really got confidence in it. By contrast my Z-Packs literally came apart at the mesh in a summer storm with 25 mph wind. Not very impressive. My Terra Nova is a great tent but I’m just physically too long for it. Black tent is not for me. Why make it black, Also Terr Nova using cheap alloy poles and not leading poles from Easton or DAC, that tent s expensive for what it is in my opinion there is a lot better options for aa light weight back packing tent at less money. Small and heavy for its useable size.

      @@etztz123 It’s not coincidence, I purchased this the day it was released so my review was way before theirs. Check the dates for yourself! You can see me testing it in the Brecons way back before summer. Rubbish comments like this annoy me because I’m spending my own money. If you bothered to watch the channel properly you’d see me talking about reinvesting all my money back into it. Others just bank it all, then ask for Patreon, Memberships, Subscriptions, etc. They’re the ones laughing at you, not me.

      @@BackpackingUK I dont really see why my comment is rubbish. Too many youtubers out there now all being furnished with free equipment in return for cheap advertising. The fact they obtain the equipment isnt my issue - I think they deserve it tbh. However, its the reviewing without stating whether they paid for it out of there own money or not which bothers me and for obvious reasons. (Bias reviews) I know you stated you used your own money but it just seemed coincidental, abbie barnes and others who are all affiliated with terra nova have reviewed this same product. I asked abbie the same question but she never responsed. Only Paul Messner on a recent vlog said he aproached Terra nova and asked if he could review this particular tent, so big respect to him for being honest. Perhaps others should follow with this transparency so viewers know wether reviews are genuine and unbiased.

    Unless I'm not viewing correctly, how can a 4 season tent not have an outer that reaches the ground all around?
    There isnt even a snow skirt?
    Try that scenario out in a Cairngorm winter storm and you'll very soon realise its shortcomings. The outer weatherproofs the inner, its not rocket science....
    Great tent but true 4 season? I think not, 4 season in 'soft' weather only.

      @@alanhanley2981 Writing from my experience (200 days working field days as geographer), not the brand claims: four season tent can be used in any season: hot summer or cold winter, usually it is modular, great example are new Robens Chaser Series (offically claimed as three season tents but are actually four season - that's why I always trust european brands).
      Winter tent is meant only for a winter, handling the snow weight, having insulation or proper mesh: as the example Ferino Solo tent and Helliberg BL series or tents brandes as "expedition" tents. Using winter tent in other seasons would be problematic, mostly due the condensation. But take that as my two Slovene-Euro cents... I use tents mostly in Alps.
