You inspired me to make a couple snowmen for an ornament exchange. I turn pens but rounding things off was a new challenge for me. I cut into the brim to hard and snapped it off too. I also don't have a chuck so had to make some adjustments there. over all I'm satisfied. thank you.

I'm very new to wood turning and decided to try this as my first real project. Used scrap wood, which wasn't the ideal wood but following your tutorial ended up with a snowman that, well, looks like a snowman! Need to practice a lot more to get as good a shape as you have but am delighted with how my first attempt came out .... which was entirely thanks to this really excellent, and clear, tutorial. Thank you!

Nice video! I'm going to try this project with maple, poplar, and purple heart. I had to remove a maple 18 months ago in my front yard. My kids of course played in that tree and it was NO Dad. Had to come down so saved some branches. Attempting some larger snowmen for the girls for keepsakes. Purchased the milliput in 4 colors. Thanks for the expert video!

Very classy! I have never heard of Milliput until now. This is a rather labor intensive process for an ornament, however, for a larger snowman to sit on a shelf, it's a great design. If I'm doing a lot of ornaments, I'll use a process similar to the one shown by Rick Turns on his channel. Again, your videos present a very clear step by step process and I'm going to use if for a larger snowman.

I like the instructional video especially giving the measurements to making the reference marks/lines. Like others, I had not heard about milliput, but have used other epoxy mixtures. Would like to know what type of tool/gouge is being used. It doesn't look like a 3/8 gouge, so am not sure what type it is. There is certainly a sharp edge on the tool to make those cuts look like a hot knife through butter!

I'm new to turning, so this is a bit overwhelming especially to adapt different wood sizes and trying to follow all the steps. Is there a written document to provide these steps and how to adjust measurements to different wood sizes? Also have you done one where the hat is incorporated with the initial blank (ie the same wood as head/body)? Those instructions/measurements would also be helpful. Thanks for any newbie tips!

Awesome project. thanks for such an informative video. Brand new to turning and this seems like a great project to hone my skills and have something to gift to family who loves these type of things. I have an abundance of maple blanks to work from (took a tree down last year)
What tool are you using to round the body into a sphere? Is that just a spindle gouge?

I am just starting to use a lathe. For small craft projects like the snowmen which is better...dry or wet wood? I hear wet for bowls to get them to a rough and oversized shape, then let them dry in a bag for a long time before finishing them. Same for small crafts like the snowmen?

I love this little guy. I’m making nine of them.
I have one question: what knot did you use to tie the ribbon into a scarf? It looks like maybe a Square Knot, but I can’t be sure. I’ve tried several of my own, but they don’t look as good as yours.
