@Deanswoodworking I have been “studying” quite a few gonk videos over the past few weeks and built a private library for my own reference (I have significant short term memory issues and rely on my TH-cam library for reference). THIS video is going to the very top of the playlist. I love this approach more than any of the others and I know I’ve watched at least 25 so far. Thanks for such a cool way to go about it.
I make Christmas ornaments every year for family members and was running out of ideas until I saw your video. Really cool and your tutorial was well done , as always. Thanks, Dean!
Hi Dean... I love these little guys... I will definitely give them a go... Looks like this is going to be a popular video... well done... Take care...All the best.....Andy
Dean, your techniques are a bit different than mine but always good to see how others do it. I like the way you marked the fur cut with a felt tip pin and the heart shaped shape description is spot on. Stay safe my friend.
hello love your gnomes video, i think I'll make gnomes my first project! {I'm new to turning ! i just received my first lathe its a mini wen but a start}
Cool video and neat process. Please tell me the diameter of the piece after truing up the branch and overall height of the finished piece. Thanks and have a Merry Christmas
My clubs challenge next month is turning a gnome, good timing for me. Compared to other videos I've watched, you seem to have simplified the process. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Dean. Your pretty informative on your stuff and it's given me some good ideas. Hopefully after hip surgery I can go turn some of the things that I've seen.
I have made a bunch of free standing gnomes, never thought of doing them as hanging ones so thanks for the idea. In stead of cutting down the beard to go around the beard I use a leather punch from the back to make the hole for the nose, I found that helps me hold while all the glue cools etc
New guy here. I've been wondering what to do with the 200ft of cedar hurricane Ida left me. Now I know what to do with the smaller pieces. The tree was one my dad had planted a long time ago. I don't mind that it got blown down, I just wish it would have fallen ON the barn not AWAY from it lol.
Lots of questions about the "fake fur". Amazon, JoAnn, Michaels and Hobby Lobby are your best bet for locating the fur if in the USA. Amazon has a good selection of the darker colors. When using hot glue and you want to get rid of those annoying glue strings you can hit them with a quick blast of hot air from a blow dryer. The gnomes are adorable. Gnomes are very big these days in the crafting world. I'm a paper crafter and have made many note cards with gnomes.
If you don't mind small suggestions, drill the hole while it's on the lathe with more wood. Then turn the wood down to the size you want. This takes care of tear-out.
@@DeansWoodworking thanks for the reply. I guess I should have loaded up on it the last time I saw it but was hoping you knew of someone on your side of town that had it.
Good Morning Dean. Greeting from Northern Ireland. Just to say I have been enjoying you videos for the past few months. One simple question. Where or what do you use for the beards on the gnomes? Good wishes
The gnomes are very cute. I just don't understand why you're sticking your the hats on with glue. I will make them as small containers, then you can put coins or objects in them. The hat serves as a lid. Thanks for the great idea and the great video! Greetings from Germany
Thank you! 😊 I only glue them on for the ornaments because they are hanging on a tree. See the Gnome with a Secret Video th-cam.com/video/7EU1FxQgiNM/w-d-xo.html Thanks for Watching!!!
I bought it off Amazon its just a regular pin vise but I took the collet off one end. That will let it fit into the drill chuck. Thanks for Watching!!!
@@DeansWoodworking thank you. I am new to this and love your videos I have done lots of snowmen/icicles and the bird hous. Not as good as yours. But still learning. LOL Have a Merry Christmas.

I am thinking about taking up wood turning as a hobby. Your vids are great for a beginner :).
Thanks John.
Hi. Lovely little objects. Could I ask why you hollow out the body if you intend to glue the hat on, please ? 🤔😌
To make it lighter since it’s an ornament hanging on the tree. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for that. You probably did say why, on the video, but I haven’t any sound on the computer 😡Much appreciated.

Good point! use it if you can. Thanks for Watching!!!
Thanks Dean. Enjoyed it. See you are apart of AAW. I was for many years until I could not stand the politics anymore in it.
Great project. Gnomes are the hot item right now. What are the rough dimensions of a typical gnome?
I am not sure I can answer that question. I make them all different sizes These are about 3 -4 inches half being the hat. Thanks for Watching!!!
Looks just like a little neighbour I had when I lived over by the holler.. Nice job.. Did you get that cat fed?
The cat was not happy because he wanted to be on the table helping. Thanks for Watching!!!
@Dean's Woodworking I thought thecat was nervous that it was going to have give up its fur for a beard... lol
Love these -- Is there a reason to hollow out the body if you plan on sealing the top on?
only to reduce the weight since they will be hanging on a tree. Thanks for Watching!!!
