What if Tony hadn't lost his fingers in that industrial accident? His guitar playing wouldn't have sounded as unique. He was filling in for a woman who called in sick that day. What if she didn't call in sick? And Tony had actually quit the job the day before but his mother told him to back to work and finish because "Iommi's don't quit!". What if his mom hadn't told him that? Makes you think how small, insignificant events can have a big impact on future events.

His solos would've sounded better, but you can't fault the man for that. It's cooler knowing it didn't stop him from being an influential guitar player.

As a guitar player who suffered a similar injury to my left hand fingers in '78, I've asked myself 'what if I'd never wanted to play guitar like Tony Iommi?'
Be careful what you wish for...
Ps yes it did have a big impact on my guitar style.

Actually cool thing about that song is that particular tritone progression of notes was chosen very deliberately. Legend claims it was outlawed in many countries by the church way way back because it sounds so evil, but legends are probably just legends. It’s considered an evil interval because it divides the octave in half with an augmented 4th and it sounds creepy. It’s also apparently hard to sing. It is called the devil’s interval. :)

Without a doubt, that diminished third grabbed me by the balloon knot when I was just a 6 year old kid who was simultaneously sure he was cursed by the sound of doom comin through my cousin's new speakers he'd picked up on his way back home from Nam yet I also felt the immense spiritual freedom knowin that there was so much more to be heard than just four piss poor pop pinheads who wanted to hold my fuckin hand!! Rock n Roll was strictly verboten in our house by my strict disciplinarian father so while he was at work, my mother and older sister held an estrogen fueled monopoly on the early SoCal AM dial so I was brow beaten by the Beatles played every 4 minutes from 9 to 5 while Dad was away at work and then I was inundated by the evening news tellin me that the "Conflict" overseas was not a "War" when the dead guys on TV sure made it look like it was one and then until Dad went to sleep, I was lullabied to dreamland being told of a place called Muskogee where they dont take trips on ABCs or something like that so Tony, Geezer, Bill n Ozzy, from the bottom a my heart, I cant thank what WWII did to you four demented fucks in Birmingham enough!!

As a non-metalhead I really enjoyed this because there has evolved some serious WTFism within the various genres. But 98% percent of metalheads are cool AF and some metal are chunes are actual classiques in their own right so its all in good fun.
But seriously, "Gnaw Their Tongues" and that kind of thing (y'know, where people try and take it even further...) - how did that happen? I reckon you could get some serious meme-milage out of that area of weirdness that exists down the metal rabbit hole.

Vincebus Eruptum and Outsideinside by Blue Cheer both came out in January 1968. That was over two years before War Pigs in September 1970. If you're referring to the beginning of heavy metal, I suggest doing a little more research. Blue Cheer never got the same radio play, but they were pioneering HM on the west coast before Black Sabbath ever made their first record.
