Time in a bottle is one of the most bittersweet songs ever written and recorded. He wrote it for the birth of his young son, only to tragically pass away shortly after. It is often misconstrued to be a sad song while it is not. Truly, it is a sweet lullaby for his new son.😇

When I was a student there at the turn of the century, I really became interested in the history and music of Jim. There is no telling how much more great music we would’ve gotten from him if he had not died so early in his career. 😕 Definitely a wonderful voice and a great storyteller.

If you think about the way "Time In A Bottle" is structured, it's not melancholy. It has elements both of wistfulness and hope. See how lines in minor key are followed by lines in major key. I think we may add our own regrets to how we feel about the song, plus some feeling that perhaps the song was some kind of premonition of Jim's untimely death.

He released 5 albums, but didn't hit the charts until his 3rd album, "You Don't Mess Around with Jim", in 1972. He released "Life and Times" in mid-1973 and then "I Got a Name" in Dec of 1973, after he was killed in a plane crash, (Sept, 1973). Several albums were released after his death. About 10 years ago I had the privilege of hanging out with Maury Mulheisens Mom....(Jims sidekick at all his concerts) The family lived in the same town I worked in. She brought me into her house and took me into the family room. One of the walls was completely covered with Maury's Gold Records for all of Jims albums. She told me she heard of her son's passing and Jims the next morning after the crash from one of her neighbors. They had seen the TODAY show on TV that morning who broke the news and the neighbor called thinking that she had already heard about it.....she didnt. Imagine learning of your Sons death from a neighbor who saw it on TV??? Mind Boggling.

Jim Croce" Time in A Bottle"" I got A Name" "Operator" "I'll Have to Say I Love You In A Song" these are all softer but wonderful songs he sang ! He co -wrote with his wife then with Maurey Muschleisen. We lost him to soon 1973 in Louisiana . Croce was from South Philadelphia, Penn. Italian parents Thanks.

Great song from a great song writer/story teller. Not sure if you got the whole story but basically Jim hustled Slim, Slim wanted his $ back and they fought over it. The part you seemed to have missed was that "Jim was cut in a hundred places, and shot in a couple more." The last 2 choruses end in "you don't mess around with Slim."

I play piano and sing in a nice hotel in Florida for a living. Have been at this gig for almost three years now. Did dueling pianos for about 20 years before that. I am a huge fan of storytelling songwriters = James Taylor, John Prine, Lyle Lovett, Billy Joel, Leon Russell, Roger Miller (especially his work on the Disney Robin Hood soundtrack) I don’t think there is a better storytelling songwriter than Jim Croce. You feel like you are there from the first word of the song. I play seven or eight of his tunes in my show on a regular basis and they are always very well received. For the next one by Jim I would love to see your reaction to I’ll Have To Say I Love You In A Song. Such a beautiful piece of music. Love your reactions. Never miss one. Thanks for your love for what you are doing. It shows.

Jim Croce was drafted into the Army during the Vietnam War. Most of his songs were written then and were stories of people in his company that were also drafted from all over the US. Big Bad Leroy Brown was his friend and the song was from a story that he told him about living in Chicago. Big Jim Walker was also in his company in the Army. Great story teller. After he got out of the Army he cut the songs.
