I think you missed that it didn't end up so good for Leroy. He was cut up (and probably dead) at the end when he met the jealous man. He "looked like a jigsaw puzzle with a few pieces gone." You are only bad until you meet the guy that is even "badder" than you.
Here's a great story about Jim Croce: This song was a huge huge hit. AT the time Sonny and Cher had a variety TV show (music, comedy bits, guest starts) and they wanted Croce to come on and do this song. The early 70's were a very different time than now on TV. The network people (Standards and Practices it was called) told the producers of the show, you can have him, but change the line "baddest man in the whole damn town" to "whole darn town." The show passed this on to Croce who said, more or less, "I'm doing YOU a favor coming on your show. If you want me, you will let me perform the song the way I wrote it." And the network backed down, and he performed his song his way, and that was the first time someone said "damn" on TV that wasn't an accidental thing like a live news broadcast.
You mean the Fonz never exclaimed DAYUM whenever a hot chick passed by? LOL. I suppose when the great Roger Miller sang, "Dang me--dang me they otta take a rope and hang me," instead sang 'damn me, damn me they shoulda took a bat to slam me' would've got him eviscerated 😃 just saying...
"Leroy looked like a jigsaw puzzle with a couple of pieces gone". Moral of the story is that no matter how bad you may be there is always someone badder!
Jim Croce is one of my all-time favorites. He is such a great storyteller. Check out Operator, Lover’s Cross, and You Don’t Mess Around With Jim. Or just check out his whole best-of.

Such a loss to the world, when he died at age 30 in a plane crash. But he left his mark for all time. What a great storyteller. For your next song, if you want something upbeat, definitely do "You Don't Mess Around With Jim". If you want something slow, "Time in a Bottle". Reiterating what everyone else is for sure saying, other great songs by Jim Croce are: ~ Operator ~ Time In A Bottle ~ I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song
Operator, Time in a Bottle, and I Got a Name are three great songs from Croce that show more of his singing, but all his songwriting and storytelling in his lyrics is aces, no matter the song. (Although I Got a Name wasn't one he wrote just performed, the other two he wrote as well.) Sadly he was another artist that died far too young, but he still left a great legacy.
Time in a Bottle, I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song, I Got a Name, You Don't Mess Around with Jim, That's not the Way It Feels, Operator, The Ball at Kerrymuir (this one you need to listen to without the kids around, lol)... Jim was a masterful writer/singer/storyteller. So happy to see you discover him!
Another singer/guitarist you might want to check out is Johnny Rivers. His hits are Memphis, Poor Side of Town, Secret Agent Man (from a 60's tv show), Seventh Son, Mountain of Love, Summer Rain, Rockin Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu (it's a good one, promise!)
Give a listen to the finest love songs ever - "Operator", "Time In a Bottle", "I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song" (among others). Rest in peace Jim and Maury (backup singer and guitarist). Both died in a Louisiana plane crash in Sept., 1973.
Good choice guys. This was one of the best singer songwriters of all times. Sadly by the time he was getting famous he dies in a plane crash and we were robbed of his talent going forward. I remember so vividly my mother and next door neighbors mom crying in our living room the day he died they were both big fans and had all his records. Operator, Time in a Bottle and I’ll have to say I Love you in a song….all good ones if you want more Croce
Jim (Crow-chee) He wrote one of the most beautiful songs ever called :Time in a Bottle. Other songs are Operator, Dont Mess Around with Jim, Photographs and Memories.
Another great folk rock singer songwriter who we lost so young. This is the music I grew up with. Unique storyteller & ballad singer. He touches your soul. He had a lot of great hits in his short career. "Photographs & Memories", "Time In A Bottle", "Operator", "You Don't Mess Around With Jim", "I Got A Name", "Workin' At The Car Wash Blues," "I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song" etc.
So glad you got around to listening to Jim Croce (crochee - the "o" is long and the "c" ch with the long e). Listen to as much of him as you can. All of his songs are awesome. Time in a Bottle is another really good one. He got raked over the coals by the company he originally signed with for his music. There was a major lawsuit a number of years back and his family finally won the royalty right to his music back.
@@shelleybleu4903 Nope, it's Cro-chee...do your research. His friends tell it best... Carol Briglia, lives in The United States of America (1945-present) Cro-ch-ee. The c in Italian is pronounced ch. In fact he was my childhood friend. ce and ci in a lot of the romance languages is pronounced ch. It's like the Russian name Sasa (Alexander). Eveyone wants to say sah sah, it's Sasha.
Jim Croce got alot of his inspiration for his songs from people he knew I have a video of Jim Croce live He talks about the different songs To lead into this song, he told us about a guy he knew when he was in Vietnam Apparently Leroy had said he had enough and just went home From the story he tells us Leroy was a pretty tough guy Spent alot of his free time over in Vietnam fighting with the MP's
J&A, you'll love his "I Have To Say I Love You In Song", "Time In A Bottle", "I Got A Name", and "You Don't Mess Around With Jim". One of the great singer/songwriters, gone to soon.
Instead of folk, a better word for Jim Croce's style would be singer-songwriter. That was the name put on a whole lot of great singers who wrote their own music in the early 1970s. They tended to use acoustic instruments and have an unvarnished, pure style that's making you think of folk music.
I agree that's a better term, but there's definitely a folk influence in his music, as there is a country/western influence, imo. But Jim took whatever elements that inspired him and sort of created something new out of it. As someone else here said, one can't help but wonder what sort of music he might be making today, were he still alive. Would his sound have continued to evolve into something completely different? There's only one thing we can be sure of, we were robbed of something great when he died.
One of the absolute greatest songwriters ever. Check out "Lover's Cross" and "I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song". Thank you for sharing!! Love your vids!!
You would love a great 'story' song by Marty Robbins titled "El Paso." Please consider featuring it. As far as another Croche song for you to feature, my pick would be "Time in a Bottle."
I second the nomination for "El Paso" by Marty Robbins and I nominate its two equal songs: "Feleena From El Paso" and "El Paso City" which give you other perspectives of the same story.
Working At The Car Wash Blues is a must! Jim Croce was prolific in his short career.... Man, he wrote some tear jerkers too. Especially, Time in a Bottle!
One of Jim's fun songs. He has many other hits, most of which were more heartfelt and gorgeous, like "I've Got a Name" "Operator" "I'll Have to Say I Love You In A Song" and another funny song called "You Don't Mess Around With Jim." Great artist taken way too soon, at the peak of his career.
Every single song on his album Photographs and Memories is great! It is one of those albums so good that I've owned it on 8 track, vinyl, cassette (twice), and CD. RIP Jim.
Jim is one of those folksy artist with a jazzy soulful side. Check out some of his soft stuff like"Time in a bottle",and "I've got a name." Jim left us way to soon.R.I.P. Jim Croce.
Wow. I thought y'all had gotten to this one already. But Jim Croce is great. He was one of those people from whom song lyrics just flowed as naturally as breathing. Find his whole catalogue or discography. And from there, try Cat Stevens. Cheers.
I listened to a Jim Croce documentary and the story of his death is heartbreaking. He's way underrated and was taken way too soon. Operator, Time In a Bottle and Don't Mess Around With Jim are all great. The first two are slow and melancholy, the last one is fun and upbeat like this one was.
Jim Croce itf is pronounced Crow-chee. Thanks for doing this song. His complete catalog is amazing. Way to short of life. Must hears are Operator, Time in a Bottle, Don't mess around with Jim, Working at the car wash blues, I got a name..... so many good songs, amazing story teller.
"Operator" , "I'll have to say I love you in a song", "Lover's Cross", "TIme in a Bottle" are just the tip of the iceberg of Jim Croce's songwriter talent.
"If I could put time in a bottle The first thing that I'd like to do Is to save every day 'till eternity passes away Just to spend them with you" "Time In A Bottle" has got to be one of the most romantic songs ever written !!!💗 "Operator" "Don't Mess Around With Jim" and "I Know My Name" are also good songs by him. He passed away to young. 😃
A good but bittersweet song with a story is Dan Fogelberg's "Same Old Lang Syne" --- about old lovers that run into each other on New Year's eve. Each have gone their separate way but neither is happy.
@@gregorymoore2877 I'd also add Fogelberg's "The Leader of the Band", about his father, and how he gave him (his son) the gift of music. Just tugs at the heartstrings.
This played on the radio so much when I was a little little kid about 4 or 5 years old. We thought it was very funny cause he sung "damn town". Hearing this now pulls me right back into the 1970s.
"You don't tug on Superman's cape. You don't spit into the wind. You don't tear the mask off the old Lone Ranger and you don't mess around with Jim!!" Good call...
As others have said below, you have to listen to another side of Jim Croce (pronounced - Crochee) "Time In A Bottle" highlights his beautiful vocals and is a fantastic song...my favorite of his!
When I was 12 years old, this man was my favorite singer. I don't think he sang a bad song. It broke my heart when he died, and so young. You can't go wrong with any of his music.
"Time In A Bottle" and Photographs and Memories" are beautiful songs you should hear. Every song on his greatest hits album are favorites. He was fantastic. RIP Jim.
Jim Croce encapsulates so much of what love does to us. For me “Operator” is at the top of the list. If it doesn’t break your heart you just have never loved and lost someone very, very special.
Jay you got it right at the end of the video it is pronounced "Crow-chee". He is definitely somebody you got to do a deep dive into. I wish he was still with us, because he could have put out so much more. But what he did put out his fantastic! RIP Jim.

Time in a Bottle is an amazing song by him!!
Time in a Bottle and Operator by him. Different tempo but amazing songs
MacArthur Park is another great song
Operator or Time in a Bottle are both great
Another great folk rock singer songwriter who we lost so young. This is the music I grew up with. Unique storyteller & ballad singer. He touches your soul. He had a lot of great hits in his short career. "Photographs & Memories", "Time In A Bottle", "Operator", "You Don't Mess Around With Jim", "I Got A Name", "Workin' At The Car Wash Blues," "I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song" etc.
photographs and memories for sure...all the rest you mentioned and dont forget, one less set of footsteps
As a teen, In the 70s, I was SO in love with Jim! When I heard about his death,I felt like I imploded with grief!
Nope crow chay
@@shelleybleu4903 Nope, it's Cro-chee...do your research. His friends tell it best...
Carol Briglia, lives in The United States of America (1945-present)
Cro-ch-ee. The c in Italian is pronounced ch. In fact he was my childhood friend.
ce and ci in a lot of the romance languages is pronounced ch. It's like the Russian name Sasa (Alexander). Eveyone wants to say sah sah, it's Sasha.
HIS CLASSIC TUNE IS CALLED "TIME IN A BOTTLE " ONE OF THE BEST BALLADS LOVE SONGS AROUND! AND HIS LAST NAME IS PRONOUNCED CROECHY
Jim Croce...”Photographs and Memories”. This song never fails to make me cry. ❤️😢
Jim Croce got alot of his inspiration for his songs from people he knew
I have a video of Jim Croce live
He talks about the different songs
To lead into this song, he told us about a guy he knew when he was in Vietnam
Apparently Leroy had said he had enough and just went home
From the story he tells us Leroy was a pretty tough guy
Spent alot of his free time over in Vietnam fighting with the MP's
Jim Croce was a great songwriter
Jim Croce was a great story teller - I love Workin' at the Car Wash Blues. Used to make my daughter crazy with it - LOUD.
Jim Croce was awesome. I was born in '63, LOVE the 70s
Time in a bottle is incredible. Operator is a surefire tear jerker.
I would second that motion on both counts.
This was one of the biggest hits when I discovered AM radio in 1973.
Working At The Car Wash Blues is a must! Jim Croce was prolific in his short career.... Man, he wrote some tear jerkers too. Especially, Time in a Bottle!
such a fun song! ♥ I'd suggest his songs: You Don't Mess Around With Jim & Time In A Bottle
"Time in a Bottle," "Operator," and "Don't Mess Around with Jim." are all great songs of his.
One of Jim's fun songs. He has many other hits, most of which were more heartfelt and gorgeous, like "I've Got a Name" "Operator" "I'll Have to Say I Love You In A Song" and another funny song called "You Don't Mess Around With Jim." Great artist taken way too soon, at the peak of his career.
check out "OPerator" that is a great Croce tune.
Every single song on his album Photographs and Memories is great! It is one of those albums so good that I've owned it on 8 track, vinyl, cassette (twice), and CD. RIP Jim.
Jim is one of those folksy artist with a jazzy soulful side.
Check out some of his soft stuff like"Time in a bottle",and "I've got a name."
Jim left us way to soon.R.I.P. Jim Croce.
One his best is I’ve Got A Name. Totally different from Leroy Brown, but another great song.
I Got a Name and Photographs & Memories are 2 of my favorite Croce songs.
If you haven’t done it already, his “time in a bottle” will get you crying, in a lovely way
"If I could put time in a bottle
The first thing that I'd like to do
Is to save every day 'till eternity passes away
Just to spend them with you"
"Time In A Bottle" has got to be one of the most romantic songs ever written !!!💗
"Operator" "Don't Mess Around With Jim" and "I Know My Name" are also good songs by him. He passed away to young.
😃
A huge favourite!
He wrote it when his wife yold him she was pregnant
Operator is a great one
A good but bittersweet song with a story is Dan Fogelberg's "Same Old Lang Syne" --- about old lovers that run into each other on New Year's eve. Each have gone their separate way but neither is happy.
There is also "Run For The Roses" by Dan Fogelberg about the Kentucky Derby.
"Same Old Lang Syne" is often considered a Christmas song, so I think it'd fit in with their Xmas music selections, as well.
@@gregorymoore2877 I'd also add Fogelberg's "The Leader of the Band", about his father, and how he gave him (his son) the gift of music. Just tugs at the heartstrings.
One of 2 songs of his to go to #1 in the USA.
The other was Time in a Bottle.
Also ,try Operator (That's Not The Way It Feels)
You said something bout patience? 😂😂😂😂😂
@@itsmedino That's a good song too. LOL
Time in a Bottle, Don’t Mess around with Jim. My favorite story telling songwriters. I loved singing this with my friends
He is definitely a folk 70 artist. Operator is another great Song AWESOME reaction
This played on the radio so much when I was a little little kid about 4 or 5 years old. We thought it was very funny cause he sung "damn town". Hearing this now pulls me right back into the 1970s.
If you liked this song then the next one should be "You Don’t Mess Around With Jim".
"You don't tug on Superman's cape.
You don't spit into the wind.
You don't tear the mask off the old Lone Ranger and you don't mess around with Jim!!"
Good call...
As others have said below, you have to listen to another side of Jim Croce (pronounced - Crochee) "Time In A Bottle" highlights his beautiful vocals and is a fantastic song...my favorite of his!
“You don’t mess around with Jim” is another funny song by Croce, but I really really wanna reaction to either “Operator” or “ Time in a Bottle”.
I always loved music that told stories. He was very good at it.
Definitely "Operator". Such amazing lyrics.
RIP Jim.
Leroy Brown got his azz kicked. Turns out he wasn't as big and bad as everyone thought. Don't ever mess with a jealous man's wife.
Yeah, I thought the same thing. If he looked like a jigsaw puzzle with a couple pieces gone, I think it’s safe to say…he lost!
I've loved this song and Operator. He told wonderful stories. It was sad how he passed.
I love me some Jim Croce!! Pronounced (crow she) my dad dedicated Time in a Bottle to my mother ❤️ you definitely got to cover more of his music!! 👍🏼😁
RIP Jim.
