Jim Croce (1943-1973) was born in South Philadelphia, raised in Delaware County and graduated from Upper Darby High School in 1960. He then studied at Malvern Prep before enrolling at Villanova University, where he was a student disc jockey at the schools radio station.
In 1966 Croce’s parents gave Jim & his wife to be a $500 cash wedding gift to be used to finance an album. Croce's parents were certain that Jim would fail completely and abandon music. To their surprise, he not only sold every last record but also turned a profit of almost $2500. The majority of those records were sold at Croce's shows.
After they were married they moved to Media and Jim was a regular performer at The Riddle Paddock in Lima. Pa. where he worked for $25 a night, plus a steak dinner & all he could drink. To make ends meet, Jim had various jobs including working a jackhammer, driving a truck and he was even a substitute teacher in the Chester-Upland School District.
I lived in Media for over 50 years, and have friends that were students for Jim..........

As I've commented before. The lessons learned here are #1 There is ALWAYS someone tougher. #2 EVERYONE takes a beating at some some time or another. #3 There are NO exceptions to lessons 1 and 2 !!!
Another life lesson that will serve you well in being an adult is this... Nobody said you have to like it, you just have to do it. Remember that when at work, at school, in the military, as a parent, or when your girlfriend tells you she wants to go dancing, or the opera, or a play etc.

Jim Croce is a great songwriter and fantastic storyteller. Jim Croce didn't get the credit he deserved because he got hustled by a slicker in NYC just before he first bust out on the 1970s music scene. He died young in a plane crash. It's a sad tale; he had a very young son and a wife he loved and they've been fighting all these years for royalties and recognition!
