I'm a big Metallica fan, but they've always been sloppy live. Maybe with the exception of the Lightning/early Puppets era. They were awful live on the Justice tour. If you listen to any recording from that tour that isn't polished by studio editing, you can tell how sloppy and out of sync they were. IMO, they've never been a great live band.
It is interesting to think about how controversial these assault rifle sounds would be in the beginning. Eminem took some slack for his but this intro sounds like an all out war… Different times man… we turned the guns on ourselves and the message runs deeper than just this songs lyrics. I wonder what the band would think about entering to this now… they killed it btw. What a performance.
Artists do it all of the time, gunshots in the middle of songs and yes, played at live shows. Mostly rappers. But this song is quite literally about War and you can’t have metallica not do the intro to this song, it’s too iconic in my opinion. But I see what you’re saying.

Bass players didn't help to sell magazines or VHS tapes in the early 90's. It's actually understandable, when you think about it.
This video is like the album, hardly any bassplayer.
