Solar Surge will teach you all about being energy independent and how to set up your home to run off-the-grid during an emergency. We empower families to take control of their energy generation and storage so that they will never be left in the dark without electricity.
In this video, Joe interviews Trevor De Maat from Savant Power and we are looking at the Savant Power System. This solution is a close competitor of the SPAN.io smart panel.

It's ironic that a video about Savant Smart Panel is sponsored by SPAN.
“…and now a word from our competitor…”
Span must be loving paying for this ad
Came looking for this comment. Savage ad placement, lol
Thank You for All that you are doing for our Planet Earth.... Peace.. Shalom.. Salam.. Namaste 🙏🏻 😊 🌈 ✌ ☮ ❤
Interesting approach. Seems if you only do a few circuits, you'd select the ones to be shed. Everything without a module would simply be always on. I could see doing this for HVAC, dryer, stove, water heater, etc., except that I can control those myself (don't do laundry in a power outage!). My panel is full, so this install would take some creativity, like a mirrored sub panel. That would work but starts making Span more cost effective. For me the key will be reading the user agreement and privacy policies. Remote access THROUGH a company to turn power on/off is not something I would allow, but many are fine with. As the owner (read: check writer), I'd like the option of cloud managed, or direct connect.
I agree. This system architecture is going too be a challenge for fully loaded panels.
I asked Bob Madonna himself about how much reliance there is with online connections and the Savant Power systems and he said there's very little communication outside of your home after commissioning. Naturally updates would need to be downloaded but Savant is not in the data mining business and doesn't want to get into any Fleet Management type scenarios.
Thanks for another great & informative video Joe! 👍💪😉
Savant actually has two systems. You can simply CT your current lugs and run a SEM or go Power Module for the most flexible granular control. Where the Power Modules would shine would be for new construction. If I was building a home I'd strongly consider Power Modules and Breakers in a couple of panels and then a panel Nextgen lighting modules mated to low voltage keypads.
I'm installing one now. If you need 4 or 5 circuits, it's a good solution. Moduels are big and take up lots of space. Install was easy. I am having issues with the android app. Reached out to tech support and have a call set up with them today. Price is right if you only need a few circuits. If you need a full panel the there are better options.
I'm going to need some kind of managed solution when I get my system fully configured. Did you look at alternatives like the Lumin Smar Panel?
I haven't yet. My customer only needed 4 circuits to be controlled for his backup generator. All heavy loads like water heater, ac heater, stove, dryer. His panel already had enough extra room for the savant modules. So, i didn't have to add a sub panel. If you want a full panel of circuits, I would go with the other options..
If it works, sounds great. Can you have it work using SIRI?
This is such a cool idea. Unfortunately these panels are just too damn expensive and a lot of the smart panel companies have extremely poor sales volume.
I want to add something like this as a smart transfer switch. So it could use as much off grid solar Possible. Also could turn on power dumps like a second ev or the water heater.
How would these solutions work if you have aluminum wiring? My main panel is aluminum.
Does either Savant or Span work with microinverters?
SPAN works with Enphase micro-inverters.
Savant right now is a string inverter system per discussion at their last summit 6 months ago or so. To my knowledge they haven't vetted a MI brand yet but they'd be crazy to not support Enphase IQ. I know solar companies that will not install anything else Residentially.
I have a SunPower system and I'd like to add a battery. Apparently neither Savant nor Span will work for me. And an Enphase battery is not compatible and I can't find a Franklin battery installer with any experience. SunPower won't install a battery in an existing system.
@@NorbHRAMA Hi Reg. We can help you get setup with Franklin battery if you'd like. Please book a call: www.solarsurge.net
Does this have local access? Or is it cloud based only?
Its weird having SPAN sponsor in a SAVANT Energy Video...
Great
Why didn’t they just make the power module a breaker itself? I don’t need a display inside my panel when you have an app. Seems like a bad product decision. I’d rather not lose the space in the panel nor have to buy a breaker with the module itself.
The closer you hold the microphone to just below the mouth, the better the signal-to-noise ratio in a noisy environment.
2:24 SPAN is the sponsor of a video about a competitor's systems?!?! 😂
Diff from span? Local only option? $3500 + install like SPAN and not open source like iotaWatt?
Hmm very smart
What is Trevor's email address? Hard to understand what he says at the end to capture his email address. We need Savant assistance in Chicagoland!
Doesnt mango and homegrid so this?
A bit like having a McDonalds ad in a KFC interview... ;)
Meh, so you need double the space to add all the modules in addition to the original circuit breaker?
Yes. The 60 amp takes up a total of 4 slots, 30 amp 2. If you only need to control 1- 5 circuits and the space is already available, then it's the most cost-effective option $$. If you don't have space or want to control lots of circuits, then you will have to go with a full new smart panel system $$$$.
Watched 4 times and couldn't follow. Summary vs spam anyone? Price, why worth it over Emporia Vue2?
Emporia only monitors loads, it does not control them.
Just get a generator people. If your batteries get low, charge them with the generator and avoid this complexity.
