Savant's smarthome system is so genius, it's idiot-proof

  • Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri can talk to a bunch of different devices, but so far they aren't as good at making multiple devices work together. To fully automate a home, it helps to enlist home automation services from a company like Savant.

    Having a system like this installed in your home is just a open invitation for any Home Automation Designer to suck thousands from you. "top" "top of the line" "ultra", they'll use these words that'll just water your mouth into thinking you have the most amazing setup. Having said that, a strong gripe I have with this and other High-End systems like RTI, Crestron, and Control4 is that the DIY aspect is pretty much non-existent. Allowing SI's and Designers to make their way into the higher end homes and businesses. Thankfully they still have open sourced apps like OpenHAB and HASS.io to accomplish the same thing for quite literally thousands cheaper.

    • @iotypro
      @iotypro 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some people, like yourself, have the time to learn and install their own systems using OpenHAB and HASS.

      @@noelv1976 nothing wrong with it, I'm a SI as well. Problem is that there were things like Logitech Harmony that was the perfect point of a DIY and you didnt need to be a programmer to basically do what the higher end automations did.

    If a closet has to look like an I.T. Dept. server room, to make things work it's too complicated. So much can go wrong with a setup like that over time. And then the homeowner either has to spend time trying to figure things out, or do without service until a call can be made to an outside provider, instead of spending time enjoying all their media!

      If you don't want the rack, you will have the equipment spread through your house instead. That's the point of the rack. To hide the stuff. You'll always have the gear regardless. Want speakers throughout your house that isn't Sonos? You need an audio matrix. You need amps. You want in ceiling speakers powered by sonos? You need a Sonos connect amps per room minimum or enjoy a bunch of impedence matching VCs everywhere. You guys have a complete misconception about what a smart home is and what the point is. Sorry bud but a Google home, 2 shades, your ISPs modem/router combo unit and TV's using tv speakers with one source is not a smart home.

  • @WACC_Warlord

    honestly, this doesn't seem that great. I have almost every single thing listed here except its all being done through 1 app on my smart phone or google home. Ive also gone with sonos and samsung atmos for all room audio. Just start googling stuff you dont need a company like savant. I did this setup for way-way less and I have no giant server that im sure will become outdated or need potential maintenance.
    The one thing I'm not sure how they have done is the streaming of different sources from that rack. I.E one apple tv connecting content to multiple tvs without being next to it. Some sort of wireless HDMI? or in wall wiring I assume

      I work in this industry, I have for 10 years, the fact that you are making any criticism about this, or stating that it isn't that great and that you can kind of do this with what you have,and then wondering how it's done, makes your argument completely invalid.

    • @WACC_Warlord
      @WACC_Warlord 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Adam J I stated that savant is a completely useless company. One can very easily do exactly what they have done in a simpler way with less equipment needed. The single and not really all that impressive aspect is the single source to multiple displays wirelessly which I did not understand. After about 5 min of googling I now understand how it's done. Re confirming that having said company do any of this is a complete waste of money

    • @adamj7198
      @adamj7198 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I will agree with you that you can control all of these things without Savant, that is true. Although I install this stuff, at my own house I have a mix of systems that I use, Vera, SmartThings, Sonos, Amazon Fire, because I tinker around with them and I have the knowledge to operate all of them and make them work with each other.
      What Savant brings to the table is a very polished single app interface that integrates all of your systems under one umbrella that makes it incredibly powerful and convenient to do very complex things with the equipment in the house. The customers I deal with don't want to have to know anything about technology, they just want it to work. This is the type of platform that you can bring to people who don't know and don't want to know how it all works or want to put effort into enjoying today's technology, they just want TVs on the wall, sound everywhere, control the lights, the ability to arm and disarm the security system, and control their HVAC all from one spot. Once the system is properly set up, the customer can literally take a "snapshot" of a particular room in the house or the entire house, save that as a scene and recall it from one button push or from voice control. The volume, the channel the TV is on, the level of the lights, everything. It is really cool once it's all set up, it comes at a premium price yes, and I think Savant is extremely out of bounds with the licensing fees that they charge, but some people want to pay for that and when they do they are rewarded with a really powerful home control system that is very user-friendly to operate. We also use control4 to do many of the same things, but it just doesn't have that same "luxury" feel that Savant does, the app is what sets it apart. It's just like cars, there are plenty of different ways to get from point A to point B, just depends what you want to use and how many luxury and convenience features you want.

Well I can, but I have to have an integrator come back to put it together for me. No, not doing that! Also it's just downright more expensive and these days you can get a better DIY system for half the price. Then again, I like to tinker and put things together.

I just started using it a few weeks ago and so far I like it but it definitely can use improvements. For instance, I have my Nest camera linked to the Google Home App which is great but you lose all the features such as rewind and zoom. If it's too much to add detailed features to the Home app at least provide a link to the full Nest app within Home in case I need to do some advanced stuff.

    Amazon echo device's can be contacted to hifi for better speakers, many TV's these days are " smart " and work with Google home or other brands, so wands, voice, etc are all possible using cheepo domestic electronics

    You dont need to spend 300 bucks for an ipad or complicate things with "savant" or whatever to control your home, just buy a fifty dollar echo dot or google gome mini and control things with your voice, samsung has this samsung one thing going on with their tvs but the only thing i liked were the speakers

    • @ChristopherLakeWilliams
      @ChristopherLakeWilliams 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kaylie Avidia Northbrook I was simply pointing out how all of this can already be done with much less of a headache. My home has the exact same functionality of everything shown here. Every room (even bathrooms) are equipped with Sonos speakers. No need for a “rack” that I have to call a professional to adjust. The point of all of this should be user empowerment. It’s like buying a Smart TV and having to call Samsung whenever you want to change the channel. You have an event at your home, something doesn’t connect and you have to call savant lol. It is simply made way to complicated to justify the maintenance fees.

    Samsung has the biggest smart home ecosystem not including their Smart Things hub. They have the TV, soundbar, rear speakers, phone, tablet, headphones, watch, Refrigerator, dishwasher, washer, dryer, oven, vacuum they even have a mesh wifi system. THEN you have the smartthings hub which allows you to use Ecobee Thermostat, Ring Doorbell, Arlo cameras, Bose sound system, Phillip's hue lighting, wemo smart light switches, ...The smartthings hub can also work with smart shades, smoke and carbon monoxide, trackers, and much much more.
