I did this as a kid in Black Diamond wa. There was an airshaft covered by a 10 x 10 grate which was for the Franklin mine.
One evening my friend and I drove around the gate in my old truck and went about 5 miles back into the woods to the old town of Franklin above Green river gorge. We drove up to the shaft with a 5 gallon can of gas, a couple of hefty garbage bags, and a sock for a fuse. I stuffed the bags between the openings in the grate and filled the doubled up bags with gas, then I tied the bags shut and tied the sock onto the bag and dribbled a little gas on the sock. Then I lit it and let it go. The shaft was several hundred feet deep. I will never forget the blast when the bag hit the bottom. I didnt know the bottom of the shaft and adjacent tunnels were full of methane. The pressure wave lifted us up and flung us over the railing. For a half hour after we could feel the slight trembling of the cave ins and hear the tunnels collapsing far below us.

I grew up next to franklin, maybe a mile and a half away. I spent a lot of time in and around Franklin. One of my best stories comes from there.
When I was a kid I had a beat up motorbike with no brakes, and I mean No Brakes. Anyhow I was up riding around by the John Henry mine when I decided to go to Franklin. I was putting along when I came to a long, steep hill with a curve at the bottom. I thought it would be a good idea to attempt this challenge so off I went. The old motorbike picking up speed, more, more, more, until I was tearing down the mountain. I was fairly certain I could navigate the corner and mentally prepare my self. The corner approached rapidly and as I began hurtling around it I saw something that I will never forget.
A large black bear...... and 2 cubs!! My mind raced like lightning! I did a few mental calculations and judged the distance to the bear, my speed, the rate at which I was decelerating, and any escape routes. Then I judged whether I could scoot around her.... nope! Now she just stood up! I spied my one chance to avoid running Into a bear on a motorcycle. It was a very old road, slowly dying and becoming a trail. I dug my feet into the gravel to drain off speed and tilted the bike in what felt like I was going to slip for sure and wipe out and having to explain why i was all scratched and chewed up. Anyway, i just barley made that turn and instantly checked behind me to see if the bear was after me! Well, the road I took was the Old Franklin road. I drove home through Franklin, then the shaft, and then the cemetery.

Funny enough, there's a theory I found in a Dark Souls video that says this is actually how the whole lore started. No joke.
The guy there pointed out how the Firelink Greatsword description said the sword that had been thrusted into the first bonfire existed before even the age of fire. Before Gwyn, even.
His theory was that since the sword's special attack was similar to many dragon weapons (the ones you get from cutting the tail off of dragons), the firelink greatsword might have come from another mutant archdragon that lacked immortality, just like Seath.
Once the dragon died, the sword was found in his body, or made from parts of it.
But the thing was tiny and useless to the other dragons, so they let it sit around until one of them decided to throw it into one of those hollow archtree trunks for shits and giggles.
The sword fell through the trunk until it hit the floor of a cavern, accidentally triggering it flame ability...
...and the rest is history.
