I like everything you’re doing. A couple suggestions: measure ring gap after honing. You should also start measuring for cylinder out-of-round. Keep up the good work.
When you remove valves from a head, make sure you deburr the stem where the keepers sit in the groove, oftentimes there will be tiny bits of metal sticking up, causing it to hang up in the guide and possibly damaging it upon forcible removal of the valve. A small file or whetstone takes these right off and allows the valve to slide right out. Great video on this overhaul!
So awesome to see an actual engineer working on a simple stupid bike that is actually an engineering marvel and a wonder. How about those valves being spotted ? Excellent , loving it ! Superstar
To get it into reverse: trans in neutral, push red "R" button on clutch lever then pull clutch in. Then lift up on the reverse lever, put shifter into 1st and she'll go into reverse. Let out the clutch and away you go
@@2vintage you dont put in into first to go into reverse, you press the red "R" (I noticed that your had dry rotted off so its just a metal post) and pull the clutch in while in neutral, then just pull up on the lever and it should click into reverse. But youve probably figured it out by now but, oh whale. (Edit: Im a dum dum stuoid brain, i just saw you do it, dont just the gun on commenting lmao)
I had a yellow 300ex and wish I never got rid of it, had a full fmf exhaust and bigger jets to accommodate the exhaust, thing was so much fun and great for learning slow wheelies. Not the fastest quads by any means but definitely tons of fun
Hey bud on those jug bolt you can get them out. By drilling holes into them for tapping A easy out into the bolt hole predrilled inside of it. Then use propane tourche to heat the outside area up to expand thread space. Then use A wrench to loosen up the bolts with slowly.
To get in reverse you push in the little button on top of the clutch lever then pull in the clutch, third step is pull up on lever. Pretty complicated for a reverse procedure if you ask me 😂
I LOVE your videos fixing these quads and bikes. I'll pass on something I learned from another guy (I think all of us guys doing fixit videos can share a wealth of info and experience), might have been Rocky Mountain Redneck (I can't remember for sure), but he was having trouble getting broken off seized bolts out, and used a set of Parrot Pliers. I'd never heard of them before. It worked for him, but I didn't really have a lot of faith in it, but as I seem to have a tool fetish (I have tools I can't even pronounce the name of), I ordered a set just to have them. Holy crap, those things work incredibly well. I have yet to find a bolt that has at least 1/4" sticking out I couldn't get out with those things. Heat it up like Matt Mazzella said below, grab it with those pliers, and they grip like nobody's business. Looking forward to your next one. Kudo's man.
When you do old seats and the foam is dries out and rough, glue a layer or comforter batting to go over the foam before you staple the seat cover on. The seat cover you got was for a fourtrax, you need one for a trx300ex sportrax.
You should invest in a decent size drill press to Hone your cylinders. When you do it by hand you stand a good chance of making your cylinder egg shaped.also, check your end gap by using the piston to squar up the ring, and do it after you have honed the cylinder.the reason the valves had a lip on them is because the actual valve seats were worn out, causing the valve clearance to b to tight.
Yeah honing cylinder is supposed to be a simple light low rpm couple passes just to get slight crossed hashmarks ... thats how i learned it anyway ... could be wrong
Thanks for the videos man. I watch them all. Just a tip for you when checking the ring gaps. Use the piston to press the ring in there. It guarantees the ring is perfectly level in the bore for you to check the gap.
I heat gunned the plastics too on my 95 klx650. It looked pink and purple before bow it looks a descent original red. Great work i enjoy your content man. Wrenching is awesome
Great job again joe they plastics came up like new cracking little quad for some great fun on well done mate take care looking forward to the next one 🔧🔧🔧👍👌
He used to use a piston all the time in previous videos. After you check the ring gap 100 times, you get a feel for when the rings are in the correct position to check the gap.
Man, it's a good thing you decided to change the valve guides. That intake valve was stuck! You should consider a little assembly lube on the top end for first startup. Great vid sir!
Cmon dude you can do it, you gotta get em out of there and do the job right like you have been doing in ur vids..dont start half assn now you come to far dude..
Yeah man, that seat cover is for a TRX, not an EX. The TRX is the utility style quad. Easy mistake to make, but you can’t really blame that on the seat cover company.
Trx300 is a utility quad. What a hack! Not taking out broken bolts. To put it in reverse theres a button you push down on the clutch lever, pull the clutch in then pull the lever up. I cant believe i watched this!
Little advice for you if it's ok. Next time when you're trying to get a broken bolt off like that. Get it as hot as you can, when you're done welding the nut on it should be glowing red. Then put a good pair of vise grips on and it should most likely come out.
When I do the nut trick, I only thread the nut onto one thread and then fill the rest with weld up to the top of the nut. That usually produces enough heat to get her free.
I just used it on my jeep. On wheel bearing bolts that I didn't have the right size socket for. I just welded a nut to the top of the bolt. Got it cherry red in the process and got them out with no problem. I'm not saying that it's a 100% guarantee. But if they're that stuck in there you'll most likely never get it out if you don't get them super hot.
Hey 2 vintage that problem I had on the ltr450 was cause by a aftermarket starter the shaft is a bit longer than oem I put in an oem one and it turns sweet
I know nothing about atvs but I have a honda fourtrax 420, just had the piston rings changed on it and a few other things few weeks ago but now it's smoking after I changed the oil, damn I must've messed something up.. but I'm learning a lot watching these and hoping to fix it myself soon
My god that valves seriously bent!Love ure thorough work!In ure experience for yzs kxs etc,is it OK to do a transmission, fluid, change when cold?🤔🤔🤔👊💪👍
Just grind off the long part of the one to match the other one.,or use heat on the outside.& regular vise grips the loosen it up with.& do the other process to the other one. To get both bolts out of the engine block for mounting the jug onto the engine with.
solid advice ^^. i cringed when i seen him applying gasket maker under the base gasket..like...wtf bro ?!. bad way to seal for future oil leaks...and that gasket maker crap will throw the tolerance out of spec. he's got the '' i like working on these '' talent, but loses me when he does it half assed where you should not.
To get it in reverse there’s gonna be a little button by your clutch lever push that in pour the clutch lever back Then pull the reverse lever/handle up Then it will go into reverse gear but great job bringing this back to life very well job done do you still have this particular quad?? you can do so many things to this and they last a very long time
Love the videos I watch them all..the only thing I hate is how much we can hear you breathing lol idk why but it bugs me but keep up the good videos man
Man good job a few Suggestions when your honeing cylenders put your drill in gear 1 and slow it down a bit and use oil that will help the stones cut better
What are those tubes sticking out the piston jug near the bolt holes I’ve redoing one now and the new head didn’t come with them in it do I need them etc?
the way you honed the cylinder could be considered a hate crime...but somehow, even with that garbage piston..it will probably run forever...on 87 octane....with a generic air filter...and bent valves...because why wouldnt it......ffs....
@@Jetsonn scratches should be at a 45 degree angle. To achieve that you need to run the drill at a slower rpm and move up and down faster. And you shouldn’t have it tilted sideways and hone it, you’ll get more pressure downwards honing it that way. And be more consistent with the up and down movement
When you are checking ring gap use the piston keep the ring square in the bore plus check the ring gap at the bottom of the bore as well as the middle, piston to wall clearence depends on the piston material one or two mill on the loose side isnt going to kill the engine

Hey, I got the same bike it’s a 98 but it has a loud tech on the upper part of the motor how much is that to fix the guy that sold it to me said damn bikes do that but I don’t think so but I bought it fun bike but need to get it fixed
Hey I have a 1988 Honda trx250X fourtrax 4×2 and seen how the 300EX has the same size Pistone like how you showed on the 250 was like stamped 246 and the 300EX stamped 280 something on the block so my question to you is the 250 and the 300 the same in power? I'm really curious because I want to buy this 1998 trx300ex then sell my 1988 TRX250X so if you could please tell me which one is better and or are they basically the same motor in both the 250 and 300 and how could the 300 be more powerful if it's the same size cylinder as the 250? Also should I keep the 1988 250 or get the 1998 300 in your opinion which one would you go with?
I already put a lot of money in the 1988 250 and looking at the parts that I bought for my 250 most everything would fit on the 300 like a arm bushings front and back bumper wheel bolt pattern all the same so is it worth buying the 300? It is 10 years newer then my 250 seems like only difference is Kickstart versus electric start so please tell me in with some knowledge LOL
The seat cover you got is for a Honda 300 fourtrax utility they were made 88-00 and the trx300ex was made 93-09 I believe

I think you're confusing TRX with FourTrax. TRX is the sport quads, like trx 250, trx 450r, etc. Fourtrax is utility.
Yeah it’s a trx300ex but the seat cover didn’t say ex so the cover was probably for something like a fourtracks
