I'm Portuguese and I almost cried watching the Capitol scenes live on the news. It almost doesn't matter where you're from in the face of something like this-- Democracy was at stake. As someone from a country which experienced a dictatorship for decades on end during the 20th century, those images were a violent reminder that you cannot, at any point, take democracy for granted.
When people ask you "what's the point of voting anyway?", THIS is the point of voting. You vote to keep democracy alive and away from those who wish it harm.

Trump agreed to record a short video only after multiple staffers and GOP lawmakers lobbied him to make a statement and the President offered praise and understanding for those who had broken past barricades, two people added.
