I've been there once. When I got back from my first tour in Iraq with the Tx Nat Gaurd they let us loose for the night so a bunch of us made a road trip there from Fort Hood. One of our guys was a local there. Let me tell you about a Dozen of us Soldiers showed up all in Uniform some of us had families with us. As soon as we walked in we got a standing ovation from the staff and patrons I've never been so humbled in my life. None of us paid for our meal all the local patrons paid for it. Of course the waitress got a good tip. And one guy wanted to buy us all a steak to go. I've never felt so welcomed not only by the staff but the patrons as well. And the size, quality and taste oh my God superb. It's not a flashy big city steak house by any stretch but that's part of its charm. I have very fond memories of this place not only for its welcoming hospitality but its great steaks. I'd highly recommend it to anyone. Its truly not only a Texas gem but an American one as well. May God Bless the Leona Steakhouse.
I saw this on The Texas Bucket list in 2016. Just now finally got the chance to come here and check it out. AWESOME GOOD ! Better than the fancy restaurant steaks in Nebraska we had several months ago.
God, I love being born, raised and living in, Texas! We are so, very fortunate with not only the price we pay for our beef, but the amount of weight and absolutely fresh quality we are able to purchase in this great state. I've worked in many states due to the oil & gas industry many years ago, as well as for vacationing, and the prices are ridiculous, especially for the size you receive, and is also not as juicy/fresh. I also am well aware, because many states have to receive their beef from out of state, but that brings me back to my point of emphasis; fortunate. I love to barbecue Texas style quite often, and when I used to travel for hitches for work in Utah and Colorado, there were no beef skirts, chicken fajitas, mollejas(sweet bread), tripas, ribs or sausage available. Many butchers weren't even aware of those types of cuts of meat. So for our first 6 weeks of work(hitch), we had to settle for small dry steaks, packaged beef patties and weiners for cookouts. Borrriiing! Haha 😀. So, when I returned for our next hitches, I took all the above mentioned and more. I also took many bundles of prepared mesquite from my ranch, which also wasn't available up north(at least in the city's and nearby, we were in), along with steaks, seasoning, Pico de Gallo, homemade tortillas and jalapeño bombers, barbacoa for breakfast and my tow-behind BBQ pit. When we had our first days off, I had a cookout and invited my fellow Texan coworkers, as well as my native coworkers/friends from Colorado and Utah. The guys from up north were absolutely shocked at the amount of meat and enthusiasm of lengths we Texans will go for a good ol' BBQ! They fell in love with Texas barbecue and pretty much all had never had it before. I also brought many cases of Texas beer(5%) which was higher than Colorado's percent(3.2%), then. I believe in 2019, Colorado, is when the content was raised from 3.2 to full strength like much of the country. But prior to the law change, it was sold 24/7, but was extremely weak, at least to us Texans. Lol. Anyhow, that is a few reasons why I love living in this state...our plentiful and delicious beef! *Proud to be a Texan!* 🐄✌️😎🤘🥩🇺🇲

I use to eat at a place like that in Abilene, TX. Strictly on the honor system. No menu, all the beer u wanted. When you left, the lady at the cash register would simply ask what you had, how many beers. Great food.
C Y I’m not sure. It’s been many years ago. Like over 20 years. Sorry I just saw your reply/question. I think the name of the restaurant was Allen’s in Abilene, TX. (THE GOOD OLD DAYS) Hate to say, but they would probably go broke in todays environment. It was fantastic. 90% of the patrons would order the ribeye steak. Tell the man at the grill how thick you wanted the steak and what temp. There was a salad bar, a baked potato bar and self serve beer out of huge iced down buckets. All colors and colors lite. All self serve except someone would bring your steak to your table. It was really amazing. Very good steaks and all the hardworking people there in Abilene sure seemed to be honest when the paid their bill. I’ve seen the owner step in and put peoples food on a tab when they didn’t have enough to pay. He would ask them to come back and pay and eat again when they got paid. Missing that place all the sudden.

The side salad there is strangely good though. It is always super fresh. The place holds probably 200 people and usually an hour wait! Worth it though!
