Indeed :) I think it was a brave leap forward and it has done well and so have developers as it really is never easy to learn how to use an entirely new architecture. I am still impressed how much has been accomplished with 256mb system RAM and 256mb VRAM. I have 1GB on my GPU and even that gets pushed to the limit quite often so to be able to make games as good as they have with an memory as low as that is truly impressive. It shows how good the CELL really is right there.
I think Jon is doing a great job rating the 2 systems. He is explaining why he picks a console in a round by giving hard truths that fanboys don't want to hear about their system. I look forward to the final few rounds.
I know these videos are a bit old, but I am finding them interesting now. Just a note, Alien vs Predator does not run on Unreal Engine 3, it was with Rebellion's own engine, they make amazing performing engines for the most part.
@Nicholas Peat it's funny you mentioned that, back then they did have alot of the same games, with the exception of some exclusives on both sides. but it's interesting that most people didn't buy a PS3 or 360 for exclusive games, it mainly came down to which console your friends will most likely be on. since online gaming was becoming more popular at the time, but it was the Xbox 360 most people ended up getting one for that reason. but most people still ended up getting a PS3 anyway, now they fight over 3rd party games trying to buy them. but part of it got that way, because Microsoft forgot how to compete with Sony the right way. the boneheaded decisions they tried to shoehorn with the Xbox One at launch, that hurt them quite a bit. so out of desperation Microsoft was the first to try to buy companies, now Sony is doing it more, but it all started with them. Microsoft got so far away from what made them so appealing in the past, it was an American company trying to compete with Japan, but since Microsoft was unfamiliar with console games, they brought people in that were familiar with it. that's how they got games like Halo at the time, the Kotor Star Wars games that was even a big hit in Japan. that trend only continued into the 360, but around 2012 that's when things starting changing. i don't how a company goes from being respected in the gaming world; to being reduced to a service. not to say Gamepass is competely bad, but when that becomes a companies sole focus, your competition is gonna benefit more sales as a result. that said as much as i like exclusive games, but not every game Sony makes i care about. some i did like, but not all.
I still find it hilarious when people are so intense about the differences. I did enjoy booth console when I had time. I've been especially enjoyed the exclusive for booth ones which were really special. I admit I like PS3 a bit more but I have nothing against the Xbox and been a proud and happy user when I had it. Now I'm a PC gamer but will always look back with a big smile on my face and remember the good times I had with these 2 great console.
@@vogonp4287 I honestly don't think PC's are the limiter at all and as a matter of fact I think PC's are pretty well powered today. The main limiter are AAA game developers spending less time optimizing their games and less time actually trying to make their games good which results in a suboptimal experience on PC at times.
After all these year's and owning both consoles I see it's probably because the ps3 mostly runs on 720p and the Xbox 360 runs on 1080p but ps3 is blue ray and Xbox 360 is dvd but still the 360 seems to look nicer on game's then the ps3 so glad it's not like thst now a day's tho.
you noticed a lot of dips in the ps3 due to its limited amount of ram dedicated to video. all because they wanted the cpu to pick up the load. but the gpu on the ps3 only had 256 MB of ram, which limited it big time. and so you know, i noticed a crap tonne of blur on said games.
I have both the consoles. Multiplatform games definitely look better on the xbox 360. Infact I enjoy playing them on the Xbox360, because the image is sharper and the details are better. But on the other hand, I think exclusive PS3 games look absolutely stunning on the PS3.
Both consoles are AMZING! End of fucking story! I personally prefer PS3 because of better graphics, blue ray player, and better exclusives (Little Big Planet, Uncharted, The last of us, killzone, Infamous, God of War) but both are amazing

Michael Colby I disagree, 7th gen consoles were really underwhelming. I mean, look at consoles like the SNES and PS2, where you had entire libraries of really, really good exclusive games. 98% of the 360's and PS3's offerings are just shitty, watered down versions of their PC counterparts, and you really don't need an expensive PC to run 7th gen games. Yes, both consoles have a handful of excellent exclusives, but their shear volume is nothing compared to the consoles of yesteryear.

The One can record recent gameplay too, infact, you can even say "Xbox Record," to the Kinect, and the system will automatically record the last 30 seconds of gameplay. Obviously there will be longer footage archived, but that's a very convenient feature. The One will record the last 5 minutes so I guess there is a difference there, but it does have that feature.
Eh... no. There were 65 million Steam members as of October of 2013 and it's only grown since. Xbox Live had about 43 Million and PSN claimed 110 million (though that's doubtful seeing as how, at that point in time, both Microsoft consoles were outselling or already had outsold the Sony consoles). Steam is MASSIVE.
thats gaming performance, but whats that mean when the console's hardware fucks up very frequently, the xbox 360 is VERY unreliable, had around a 50% failure rate, THAT is a HUGE fail and I own an xbox 360 and have seen only the bad side of it, fucked up shit is in the bad side and I ended up needing to bring in the xbox 360 EVERY HALF A WEEK FOR REPAIRS, if thats not a clear indication of the PS3 being superior(other than it being more powerful but just not taken advantage of) then I dont know what is

@@dovic2293 Well it's been 5 years since that comment and now that I think I can confidently say I've grown a bit mentally, I'll just say that in my experience, my 360 slim had issues with crashing and not functioning and I had to bring it in several times for repairs. Admittedly it was purchased and used in a different country so things were a bit different, and eventually after several times bringing the console in and even putting in some patchwork myself, the thing _basically_ works, though I don't actually use it that often personally, ended up being more into PCs and nintendo systems than xbox in the end.
No that's not what I'm talking about, oh and it uses your already existing TV service and just adds more. Twitch streaming, Skype, voice and gesture navigation, the snap-feature that allows you to snap anything side-by-side such as music/skype/tv/movies/gaming/internet... they can all be snapped together, say I'm watching a movie and I want to do a quick search I can say "snap internet explorer" and boom, there's a search snapped down the side... just an example, you can do any combination.
PS3 third party support involved fighting and RPG games. 360 third party support involved shooting games. That's why I liked the PS3, I'll get to kick better as in Injustice, and have fun with FF then any other System.

Most Third Party Developers will have an easier time making games on the Xbox 360 thanks to it's more simplified hardware. The way the architecture was set-up in the PS3 was unlike any other system which made it very hard for 3rd Parties to develop games on. However, First Party Developers were able to have the time & work out the PS3's true graphical capabilities with games like Killzone 2, The Last of Us, & Metal Gear Solid 4 showing off what the PS3 can what the XB360 can't. Voice navigation will be awesome, get anywhere instantly with single voice commands.
I think the controller it's definitely not the reason why the Xbox 360 could be slightly better than PS3, you can play just fine every genere with the Dualshock 3, like platforms, shooters, sports, racing, fighters, action, but it's not the same case with the 360 controller, like fighting games being way worse played thanks to the d-pad
Dave Torres xbox 360 also has better internet connection, and controller means a lot to me bcs thats what you hold in your hands for few hours a day... but ps3 has better games so I decided to buy PS3 2 years ago.
The point is you can do anything, while you're doing anything, if you want to do a quick search just say "snap IE" and boom, it's there, and when you're finished you can send it away. The game/tv examples was just that, an example to show you that you can snap anything side-by-side - Want to Skype socially with friends while you play a game with them? In 1080p? You can do that, which is a great social feature by the way. If they have a use then they are not useless, Skype certainly isn't.

The RGB range levels, when selected properly in the PS3 display settings, have correct black tones, just like on the 360. Your claims are slighty false.
Yes he said stupid things. The black levels can be adjusted by the brightness tv control, plus the inside of the game adjust as well and the rgb adjust has to be set to full or limited from the ps3 menu and it has to be equal to the chosen on the tv picture settings. (Some tvs like on my Sony, it is called: "dynamic range" from pro picture setting). I set it to full on both systems.

It looks like the 360 had a better time in general with showing wetness and shine. Batman looked slick and almost sweaty. The Xenomorph walls looked wet and slimy. The PS3 though, it almost doesn't display this at all and it just makes everything look flat.
In a nutshell the PS3s graphics cabability was all hype, side by side ther 360 wins hands down. All this crap about the Cell being "hard to program for is utter rubbish".
The best looking games of the whole generation are all on PS3. Killzone 2+3, Uncharted 2+3, God of War 3, Wipeout HD, Last of us, Motorstorm Apocalypse are graphically above everything the 360 had to offer.

I got a PS3 when I was 5 and played it for years until I got a ps4 in 2014, I miss those days when there were no responsibilities and you would get home from school and play cod zombies with the boys until 2AM. It doesn't matter if you have a laptop with Skype, you have to turn your head, with the snap feature it's right there on the same screen - Not to mention it's as easy as a voice command. It doesn't have backwards compatibility, they will stream games from Gaikai, but Microsoft could do that too with their cloud system. The One has 4k resolution too, not that it matters too much right now since 4k TV's are insanely expensive.
I can tell easily that you brightened up all the PS3 games, batman arkham asylum I am playing it right now ( I'm writing on my iPad ) and I brightened to medium and it looks the same as the Xbox 360. People compare them to see how the physical differences between each console affect the graphics quality. The PS3 and Xbox 360 are very different machines. For one, the GPUs are made by different companies. Then there's the fact that the CELL processor is a pig to develop for. While it's "revolutionary", it's also relatively new for programmers. Considering how hard the CELL is to program for, developers are doing a pretty good job. And with a measly 256mb of RAM too.
When you're playing a game casually, such a Minecraft, it will be awesome to Skype with up to 3 people on the same screen, while you play, it's a very neat social feature. Like I said, you can't get to anywhere instantly if you use the controller, if you want music up, you will have to navigate through a bunch of windows - with voice commands, all you say is "Music", or "snap music" (if you want it snapped down the side while gaming/movie/tv), it's much faster, that's what I mean't.
Ofcourse they will, it means you can record the last 30 seconds of gameplay and continue playing your multiplayer game, and you can deal with the footage after. It's also very convenient that it can be done with a voice commands - let's just say you do a really amazing kill or something, you then just say "Xbox record," and what you just did will be instantly archived... awesome.
All the thinks you mentioned the One can do too, it has a built in DVR aswell. The same cannot be said for the PS4, it can't do many of the things the One can do. You can Skype on your phone, or TV, but can you do it WHILE gaming, watching TV, or a movie? No, you can't, you can literally use Skype while doing anything. They are SOCIAL features, It's gonna be awesome playing games casually and video chatting at the same time watching their reactions and stuff, it's a social features.
I was ridiculing your argument that because other devices can do some of the things, that makes them not good to have on a console - you can chat to a friend on another device, does that mean that a console shouldn't be able to do that too? Just because another device can? That basically the form of argument you used. You can multi-task anything, that's the great thing about it. Voice navigation = easier to get around, you can get anywhere instantly, it's all about innovation.
well i have never done anything else while gaming and i dont see why i should skype or watch tv while playing a game. i want to focus on my game. i have siri on my iphone but i never use it unless i get bored and fuck around with it. still getting the PS4, hope you enjoy your xbox one.
So ? Look, I'm a PS3 gamer only ( and a little bit PC ^_^ ) but when I saw Halo 4 I was amazed by how good it looks. The enormous scale of battle and number of enemies combined with stunning art-direction. 720p + AA + 30 fps stable. It may not be tech demo but it's definitely gorgeous looking game.
I only used the TV/gaming as an example, you can bring up Internet Explorer while watching a movie for example, and even do searches, all with voice commands too. You can do these things on other devices, but it's all the more convenient that it's all on one device, it's just far more convenient. Siri isn't very convenient because you need to hold the home button to give a command, I never liked that. If you say "Xbox home", it doesn't matter where you are, you appear instantly there.
I was getting at the fact that even though it's faster than the Xbox 360 RAM, having half the amount can still make a difference. For example- due to that lack of RAM the PS3 isn't able to have cross game voice chat. The fact they can make games look as good as they do with half the amount of RAM that the competition has is a testament to it's raw power. CELL isn't bad but it IS a pig to develop for.
I'm not saying that 256mb of RAM is the worst thing but it is a slight oversight on behalf of Sony considering the amount of time they delayed the PS3 by. The fact that it's a LOT faster than the Xbox 360's RAM does make up for it but just imagine if they did put 512mb in and kept it at the insane speed that it's at! And I also agree about the PS3 exclusives. Infamous, Uncharted & The Last Of Us are 3 good examples of some amazing exclusive titles that only PS3 gamers get to play.
Well that's not entirely true, but in general yeah. The edge usually goes to the 360 whether it be a marginal or major graphical difference because the games are developed on it first, then ported to PS3. Most devs still can't faithfully transfer graphical data to the PS3 cell, but if you look at multiplat games like Tomb Raider, LA Noire, Final Fantasy XIII, Ninja Gaiden Sigma/Sigma 2, Dead Or Alive 5, they look considerably better on PS3.
Red Ring of Death is no longer a problem due to the fact that the red led lights have been tooken out of the new xbox 360 slim so you can no longer put that into consideration happily
Did I ever say the CELL was bad? NO. The CELL is extremely powerful but the biggest problem with new architectures is people have to learn how to code for them. It has immense power but it has taken some time to fully understand that power. At least with the move to x86/64 developers can finally close the gap between PC and console ports so that EVERYONE finally gets games as they should be on all platforms.

I still have both systems, I use both as media players on separate tvs, mainly because the ps3 is my main analog media center on my old 51 inch 1080i rear projection TV.

Imagine for one second that the PS4 doesn't have voice chat, and you had to resort to using another device to do that - wouldn't be very convenient would it? You see, it's all about convenience, having everything you will EVER need on a single device, that's just awesome.
It's all integrated and seamless, and I'm going to LOVE it.
The One can record recent gameplay too, infact, you can even say "Xbox Record," to the Kinect, and the system will automatically record the last 30 seconds of gameplay. Obviously there will be longer footage archived, but that's a very convenient feature.
The One will record the last 5 minutes so I guess there is a difference there, but it does have that feature.

Eh... no. There were 65 million Steam members as of October of 2013 and it's only grown since. Xbox Live had about 43 Million and PSN claimed 110 million (though that's doubtful seeing as how, at that point in time, both Microsoft consoles were outselling or already had outsold the Sony consoles). @@dovic2293 Well it's been 5 years since that comment and now that I think I can confidently say I've grown a bit mentally, I'll just say that in my experience, my 360 slim had issues with crashing and not functioning and I had to bring it in several times for repairs. Admittedly it was purchased and used in a different country so things were a bit different, and eventually after several times bringing the console in and even putting in some patchwork myself, the thing _basically_ works, though I don't actually use it that often personally, ended up being more into PCs and nintendo systems than xbox in the end.

Twitch streaming, Skype, voice and gesture navigation, the snap-feature that allows you to snap anything side-by-side such as music/skype/tv/movies/gaming/internet... they can all be snapped together, say I'm watching a movie and I want to do a quick search I can say "snap internet explorer" and boom, there's a search snapped down the side... just an example, you can do any combination.

I think the controller it's definitely not the reason why the Xbox 360 could be slightly better than PS3, you can play just fine every genere with the Dualshock 3, like platforms, shooters, sports, racing, fighters, action, but it's not the same case with the 360 controller, like fighting games being way worse played thanks to the d-pad

The point is you can do anything, while you're doing anything, if you want to do a quick search just say "snap IE" and boom, it's there, and when you're finished you can send it away.
The game/tv examples was just that, an example to show you that you can snap anything side-by-side - Want to Skype socially with friends while you play a game with them? In 1080p? You can do that, which is a great social feature by the way.

The RGB range levels, when selected properly in the PS3 display settings, have correct black tones, just like on the 360. Your claims are slighty false.

The black levels can be adjusted by the brightness tv control, plus the inside of the game adjust as well and the rgb adjust has to be set to full or limited from the ps3 menu and it has to be equal to the chosen on the tv picture settings. (Some tvs like on my Sony, it is called: "dynamic range" from pro picture setting). I set it to full on both systems.

It looks like the 360 had a better time in general with showing wetness and shine. Batman looked slick and almost sweaty. The Xenomorph walls looked wet and slimy. The PS3 though, it almost doesn't display this at all and it just makes everything look flat.

It doesn't matter if you have a laptop with Skype, you have to turn your head, with the snap feature it's right there on the same screen - Not to mention it's as easy as a voice command. Did I mention it's in 1080p?

People compare them to see how the physical differences between each console affect the graphics quality. The PS3 and Xbox 360 are very different machines. For one, the GPUs are made by different companies. Then there's the fact that the CELL processor is a pig to develop for. While it's "revolutionary", it's also relatively new for programmers. Considering how hard the CELL is to program for, developers are doing a pretty good job. And with a measly 256mb of RAM too.
When you're playing a game casually, such a Minecraft, it will be awesome to Skype with up to 3 people on the same screen, while you play, it's a very neat social feature.
Like I said, you can't get to anywhere instantly if you use the controller, if you want music up, you will have to navigate through a bunch of windows - with voice commands, all you say is "Music", or "snap music" (if you want it snapped down the side while gaming/movie/tv), it's much faster, that's what I mean't.
Ofcourse they will, it means you can record the last 30 seconds of gameplay and continue playing your multiplayer game, and you can deal with the footage after.
It's also very convenient that it can be done with a voice commands - let's just say you do a really amazing kill or something, you then just say "Xbox record," and what you just did will be instantly archived... awesome.

All the thinks you mentioned the One can do too, it has a built in DVR aswell. The same cannot be said for the PS4, it can't do many of the things the One can do.
You can Skype on your phone, or TV, but can you do it WHILE gaming, watching TV, or a movie? No, you can't, you can literally use Skype while doing anything.
They are SOCIAL features, It's gonna be awesome playing games casually and video chatting at the same time watching their reactions and stuff, it's a social features.

So ? Look, I'm a PS3 gamer only ( and a little bit PC ^_^ ) but when I saw Halo 4 I was amazed by how good it looks. The enormous scale of battle and number of enemies combined with stunning art-direction. 720p + AA + 30 fps stable. It may not be tech demo but it's definitely gorgeous looking game.
I only used the TV/gaming as an example, you can bring up Internet Explorer while watching a movie for example, and even do searches, all with voice commands too. You can do these things on other devices, but it's all the more convenient that it's all on one device, it's just far more convenient.
Siri isn't very convenient because you need to hold the home button to give a command, I never liked that. If you say "Xbox home", it doesn't matter where you are, you appear instantly there.
I was getting at the fact that even though it's faster than the Xbox 360 RAM, having half the amount can still make a difference. For example- due to that lack of RAM the PS3 isn't able to have cross game voice chat. The fact they can make games look as good as they do with half the amount of RAM that the competition has is a testament to it's raw power. CELL isn't bad but it IS a pig to develop for.

I'm not saying that 256mb of RAM is the worst thing but it is a slight oversight on behalf of Sony considering the amount of time they delayed the PS3 by. The fact that it's a LOT faster than the Xbox 360's RAM does make up for it but just imagine if they did put 512mb in and kept it at the insane speed that it's at! And I also agree about the PS3 exclusives. Infamous, Uncharted & The Last Of Us are 3 good examples of some amazing exclusive titles that only PS3 gamers get to play.
Well that's not entirely true, but in general yeah. The edge usually goes to the 360 whether it be a marginal or major graphical difference because the games are developed on it first, then ported to PS3. Most devs still can't faithfully transfer graphical data to the PS3 cell, but if you look at multiplat games like Tomb Raider, LA Noire, Final Fantasy XIII, Ninja Gaiden Sigma/Sigma 2, Dead Or Alive 5, they look considerably better on PS3.
Red Ring of Death is no longer a problem due to the fact that the red led lights have been tooken out of the new xbox 360 slim so you can no longer put that into consideration happily

you can play COD BO2 but you have to update your xbox360 into the new version first. You can do that by using xbox live feature
Did I ever say the CELL was bad? NO. The CELL is extremely powerful but the biggest problem with new architectures is people have to learn how to code for them. It has immense power but it has taken some time to fully understand that power. At least with the move to x86/64 developers can finally close the gap between PC and console ports so that EVERYONE finally gets games as they should be on all platforms.
