Here in 2022! Can we take the time to acknowledge how ahead of it’s time this review series is. Almost every TH-cam video is like this one now. Well produced and researched.
The PS3 is right strange system. It looks as though they have handed off some of the work from each component on to the next, and so on. I get both side of the story now. Sony had some great ideas and Xbox was already a good solid system, more simple to code for. The PS3 was a slightly more powerful system as a whole but something very different than the 360. I think the PS3 still has more to give to new games. Whoever invented the architecture must have been on some strong drugs at the time :)
Michael F I've see speculation saying that Sony only made the PS3 to launch the Cell and bring down the production costs. I don't know if it is true but it sounds like business as usual to me.
I wouldn't say it was a little more powerful. The PS3 was a lot more powerful then the Xbox when taking 100% advantage of the CPU/GPU, but yes I agree it was a pain in the ass to develop for therefore games were just ports of an Xbox 360, well they were not as good, but man I wish devs would take the time to put more effort in the PS3 durring it's life cycle devs could have created beautiful games. Just look at the last of us, uncharted serious etc etc.
@@Fazer1971 as a whole yes the ps3 was a lot more powerful when it was utilized properly, problem is the only people that truly utilized it was naughty dog and pse titles. because they didn't have to develop for another platform. this is very telling that developers were not willing to risk their profit to try and code properly for the ps3, and this leads directly back to the way sony designed the ps3. powerful console, with crap design.
Thank you for this video series. I have both consoles, and I also work as a systems engineer, so I have some detailed knowledge of the hardware on both consoles. I love both systems, and each has its own share of pros and cons. I find your videos to be truthful, unbiased, and straightforward.
Real Gamers don't care about what console you play on. Who cares if you play Wii, PS3, Xbox 360, WiiU, PS4, Xbox One or PC. We are gamers, not politicians.
No real gamers like the one you talk about don't care where their money goes. Real gamers eventually save up for a Gaming PC and that's it. No need to upgrade every so years because the top processor now is very capable and in the futurw becomes cheaper so an SLI set up becomes apparant which power that system to immense power
Man, i love your reviews! You actually take a look at the facts and your reviews aren't biased. About time i can actually learn about these two systems in depth without bias. Ive subscribed! :D
This was the last interesting console generation. Each consoles were very unique to each other. The generations that followed were all amds and doesn’t have much difference at all.
I had a HD 5850 and that thing was almost as fast. I upgraded to gtx 960 in 2015 and didnt felt it was much faster than I bought the gtx 970 and yes that would considerably faster.
again there is a massive issue with your analysis, when you did this analysis, the only games on the ps3 that looked really good was uncharted games. and this was directly because the setup between the gpu ram and cell processor, which means the ps3 had to work harder to get close to the same effect, where as the 360 shared the memory, as you stated unified. which made communication between the xenos and xenon processor so much more smooth, some might even say that the memory configuration on the ps3 was an actual bottle neck. due to how it had to communicate and share the load.
An upated edition of this series prior to the 8th-gen consoles would've been interesting considering the later years of both consoles definitely were interesting, especially for the PS3. Skyrim running poorly on the PS3 comes to mind due to the split pools of RAM, along TLOU pushing the PS3 to its limits right as the PS4 was coming out a year later.
This 4 year old video was helpful, I lowered my Xbox 360 resolution to 720p and now Borderlands' textures looks way better with decent anti aliasing too. :D
+Fco Fjellström well your ps3 must have been a piece of shit cause i played games on ps3 and they worked fine when i played on 360 omg it was awful just awful.
I kinda miss the days where console hardware was bespoke and different. It caused issues sometimes with being difficult to program for, but I do feel like these constraints increased creativity and problem solving by devs. Nowadays with PS4, PS5, XSX and X1, with those being basically PC hardware with a custom graphics API, theyre less unique. One good thing with that, though, is that an API abstraction layer type emulator can be developed in record time (shadPS4) which is amazing.
What is the game being shown at 5:22? At first I thought it was Red Dead Redemption but I don't remember the graphics being that good or that type of font used for the on screen text.
XBOX 360 have a good HD graphics, more realistic lighting and effects. But PS3 is little bit uglier. The lighting and the effects (such as explosions, lightning strikes, bullet shots, etc..) are not good as XBOX 360.

Depends on how much you're willing to invest in your computer. The way it works is the more you spend on the best parts available at the time the computer should last longer than the specs I listed above. Most people don't upgrade their computer every year though, I update my PC every 3-4 years. I usually spend $1000-$1500 on my pc's, sometimes I might update the GPU and CPU in-between the 3-4 years.
I did look up Wii U teardown but none of the articles said anything about GHz. I Looked up Wii U tech specs instead and found an IGN article saying it uses a Triple-core, 3 GHz PowerPC-based 45 nm CPU, very similar to the Xbox 360 chip with 768kb of DRAM “embedded” with the CPU, and shared between CPU and GPU.
Well there are seven SPE's on the PS3's Cell processor, since one is always blacked out (in order to increase yields, as a Cell processor with one defective SPE still remains usable) and one of those is dedicated to the operating system. What games have on their disposal is thus the core, six SPE's and the RSX. And a SPE isn't really a core but a co-processor on which the single core can offload some (read: most) of its workload.
I remember when the first time I watched this video 5 years ago, I was really blown away by the graphics of the games shown in this comparison. Fast forward this year, I'm laughing to myself realizing that these visuals were just comparable to Android and iOS :p

I think its apparent that Sony and NVidia make some very odd choices on the ps3, if you listen to developers and more importantly how cpu and gpu hardware have progressed since the release of these consoles. You will see that Microsoft made some more intelligent choices of hardware that was ultimately more favourable for most developers. hey, ok so about 3 years ago xbox won.. but games changed in any way? are they better on ps3 now? sorry if this sounds silly for you but i have never owned a console and planning to buy one now.
I couldn't agree more. I was so frustrated when they switched from the original 'Blade' Xbox 360 dashboard to the 'Next Xbox Experience' dashboard. I thought it was nice looking at first. But then I noticed how every page was filled with ads which I didn't care about at all. And with the most recent updates (together with the release of Windows 8), they made it even worse. One page is about your games, 4 pages are about apps and advertisements. It's horrible. >:(
Wanna know something that acutally makes sense? The Xbox has a better GPU as know, with 48 unified shaders. The WiiU's GPU has over 500 Unified Shaders which leads to less bottlennecking. WiiU was also the first console to run a Native HD resolution which means it cans easily upscale to 1080p. The GPU is embedded with the graphics processor and aside from the main system memory which is used as a framebuffer.
What LP is saying is that the Blu-Ray format is capable of storing uncompressed textures on the disc thanks to the 25GB of space it has (i'm fairly certain that the PS3 doesn't use the 50GB Blu-Ray format). Also, i would have to strongly disagree with your statement regarding Assassin's Creed III looking better than any of the PS3 exclusives. Being an owner of both consoles, and ACIII on 360, I can say that it is inferior in terms of graphics compared to Uncharted 3 and other exclusives I own
Microsoft actually payed IBM to have the RSX design prints. The time of the 360's release the GPU found in the 360's motherboard was EXACTLY if not identical to the RSX prototype found in the DEH-R1000 (Older Variant of the DECR-1000) This version of the RSX was known to crack easily to thermal shock. This is why retail ps3's were less prone to YLOD's because they had I finalised version of the RSX. NOT some stolen RSX prototype found in units DEH-R1000, older than the Developer DECR units.
The major downside of the Cell architecture is that it requires a lot of knowledge, time and money to use its full potential. But if you have the knowledge, time and money, the end result you can get is very impressive. The architecture for the Xbox 360 CPU is simular to those of PC's. It's already for a couple of years now that developers say the Xbox 360 has reached its limits. The Cell processor in the PS3 can still do more than what we have seen to date. Cell is underrated, not a mistake.
very very very incorrect. most ps3 games have a 1080p/i UPSCALE option. Most ps3 games (not sure about exclusives) run at 576p and can be upscaled to 720p or 1080p/i to compensate for the lower resolution.
Yes, I know I made mistakes, I was in a rush. I'm not a 24/7 computer guy. I also am more of a PC gamer because gaming computers have better graphics and other sorts of stuff. Thank you for your information, I got to go.
I'm pretty sure you can only invite recent players and the framerate issues are still there for some fps and I used to play skyrim on ps3 but it had way to many issues with that game and Xbox always has DLC before PS3
Yep, it definantly shows too on in-depth comparisons. I can't tell you how many multi-plats I bought for Xbox over Ps3 just because the Xbox 360 version will end up with better graphics, framerates, etc.
And yes, Shadowing, high-res textures, Folliage, reflection, and lighting make or break a game, especially when it's a game like Skyrim. I play with mods such as HD Flora, More/lush grass, lush trees, weather mods, 2K HD texture pack, Sky UI, some amazing ENB lighting mods. Step 1. Go to Skyrim Nexus Mods. Step 2. Acquire some glasses. Step 3: Paste: SKYRIM ENHANCED SHADERS FX - ENB. Step 4. Admit it looks 100x better on PC. There's no denying it.
It's good that they chose to use an x86 CPU for the PS4. They couldn't go wrong with that. And I do believe that the hardware they chose is gonna be powerfull enough for quite a while. The PS3 'RSX'- GPU for example has only 256mb GDDR3 ram memory. But even with such a small amount of ram, it can still deliver gorgeous graphics. Now imagine what they'll be able to do with a GPU that has 8gb GDDR5 ram, together with the easy-to-use x86 CPU. The difference between PS3 and PS4 hardware is gigantic.
You forgot about Wipeout HD, which resolution is 1920x1080p + it also runs at 60fps. No upscaling whatsoever. It is possible on PS3, but very few developers are willing to invest heaps of time and money into their games, just to make it run in 1080p.
Can we please take into account that, if you decide to upgrade the hardware of your console midway through its life cycle, developers are going to have to design these games to run on this new hardware, as well as release an update for the old games to run on this new hardware. Then there will have to be software management on this new console so the new games will run on the old hardware. It's either that or put another CPU/GPU on the board and hardware emulate it, thus raising the price.
Not at similar pricepoints, also retail purchases without DRM are an option on console- that choice has been taken away from gamers on PC due to platforms like Steam. All rumors are pointing toward a dual-GPU APU PS4, and when you optimize games for one set of hardware the performance can nuke that of generalized development(PCs, smartphones). PCs can be more powerful, but only if they have waaay better specs than the PS4- this means $400 graphics cards, etc.
So if you were to get an Xbox would you need to get a 1080p TV for the best performance because I was about to get a console and I need to know what tv to get. Also would getting a 720p TV for ps3 be better for textures?
The RSX came in because Toshiba wasn't making progress on their own custom GPU, so Sony went to NVidia to get a GPU for the PS3. Would that Toshiba GPU been better than the NVidia RSX?
its common knowledge that most games that run on consoles are played at lower resolutions and up scaled to 1080p. Also I'd hope they are putting something equivalent to a 680 into their consoles as they expect the life span of the consoles to be another 6 - 9 years. What would be the point of releasing a "next gen" consoles with lower specs then current generation PC?
I've been letting these vids play in the background while gaming to learn a little more about 7th gen consoles, but I absolutely cannot hear him saying "aliasing" wrong one more time. Stopped at 5:11. I feel like the dude in the Snicker's Almond commercial who just finally opens the car door and falls out.
He also forgot to mention PS3 has ANOTHER GPU, which means Both Xbox and PS3 have 48 pixel pipelines. But Xbox doesn't have any vertex pipelines and PS3 has 16. This video gave you the wrong info.

Being an owner of both consoles, and ACIII on 360, I can say that it is inferior in terms of graphics compared to Uncharted 3 and other exclusives I own
The title doesn't say Xbox 360 vs PS3 vs PC
The Xenos CPU (Xbox 360) is also PowerPC so if they're both PowerPC then what the hell is it that makes dev's complain?
Antialising affect shadows, am i right? so why the shadows of Asassin's Creed III look worse on the Xbox than on the Ps3?
I noticed that with FFXIII and XIII-2. The color are much brighter, makes the PS3 counterparts look a little lifeless sometimes.
hmm true but how often do i have to upgrade specs in order to keep up with the technology? I've seen PCs go up to three thousand dollars
very very very incorrect. most ps3 games have a 1080p/i UPSCALE option.
What is the game from the 5:36 ? xbox.
Damn this video is so well done for 2009
Yep, it definantly shows too on in-depth comparisons.
5:22, which game?
It's good that they chose to use an x86 CPU for the PS4. They couldn't go wrong with that. And I do believe that the hardware they chose is gonna be powerfull enough for quite a while. The PS3 'RSX'- GPU for example has only 256mb GDDR3 ram memory. But even with such a small amount of ram, it can still deliver gorgeous graphics. Now imagine what they'll be able to do with a GPU that has 8gb GDDR5 ram, together with the easy-to-use x86 CPU. The difference between PS3 and PS4 hardware is gigantic.
What games do Sony have thats exclusive to the PS4? Because the majority of games they showed off were indie titles that are on PC already so....
In 0:02 you said cpus
8:59 No Cell is weak for central processing only one core, Xenon 3 cores. The Cell FPU are better than Xenon.
Now almost all ps3 games run on 1080p or 1080i so some of this information is obsolete.
Comparing modern PCs to these 7 year old consoles would be the same as me comparing a PS1 to an Atari 2600.
I was about to say the same thing. What kind of tech reviewer doesn’t know it’s called “AY-LEE-UH-SING” not “UH-LIE-UH-SING”...
He also forgot to mention PS3 has ANOTHER GPU, which means Both Xbox and PS3 have 48 pixel pipelines. But Xbox doesn't have any vertex pipelines and PS3 has 16. This video gave you the wrong info.
i cant wait until our systems can play all games at 1080p and high res textures
Is tht Arkham Orgins at 45 seconds bcuz this video was posted in 2009 and Orgins came out in 2013
the graphics card on the xbox360 does not even make use of the anti-alise.(sorry if my spelling is wrong)
Okay, why don't you explain your comment to The Last of Us.
Yes, when you look at it now a days. But this video was uploaded in '09, and most things aren't relevant anymore.. consolewise and gameswise.
